In memory of Danny Joe Brown who passed 17 years ago today

I'm 58 years old/ young and I am most grateful that I am part of a chosen generation that has had the privilege to actually hear what music should sound like when placed in the right hands! Thank you to all the bands that made our days and our nights and also made living a little easier! Thank you for sharing your talent your time with us all! Please if you get a chance share some of this music with the younger generations so that they won't miss out! As we've always been turn it up!!

yes agreed, 54 (In New England R.I.) grew up on a lot of Rock and Roll Music and Southern Rock back from the 70's and 80's were such great times they were all around us. that Music is not Forgotten.

They came to an old Motorcycle Dirt Track out in Surry VA, with Blackfoot, the Outlaws, & .38, every Summer for a few years. One year in the mid-80s , they had put up a net in front of the stage all day, and when Danny Joe got ready to do "Flirtin", he had gained weight, but he still climbed up the edge of the stage, & ripped that net down, between the crowd & the band. After all day in the Summer Sun, the crowd went wild.

This was a magic time. I'm very thankful I was alive back during the late seventies and early eighties. There will never be any music, live performances and energy that will match bands like this. Seeing bands live like Molly Hatchet, UFO, Blackfoot, Scorpions, Def Leppard, Van Halen, KISS and Rush was an honor and an experience that will never be matched. No cell phones, no drama, no bullshit. Just full blast, in your face, ROCK AND FUCKIN ROLL. RIP to the boys in Molly Hatchet.

Listen to his lyrics. I had the privilege to shake hands and pray with Danny Daniels on his impromptu biker track biker concert in the woods of Hampton, Virginia in 1984. Only announced on FM Radio 4 hours before the concert. $20 cash at the gate. I watched Danny drink a half gallon of Jack Daniels while singing on stage behind a 40 foot tall chain link fence... and people trying to scale it. At 3 AM us 10 groupies, 8 chicks and 2 dudes, watched as Danny came out his bus at 3 AM and signed tits. Then, he slung his arm around my neck, and said: "Let us pray. Dear God, please keep us safe from the drunk drivers tonight. Amen" Then Danny smiled at me and jumped on his bus. Rest in Peace Danny. You totally rock, dude.

Honestly, I'm not what you'd call a Molly hatchet fan. I don't even have any albums. But in a strange dichotomy, these are two of the best songs in human history. I especially love Dreams I'll Never See. What a beautiful and poetic song. Truly unique.

Florida Boys gettin' it DONE! This is what a rock n roll band IS!

One hell of a band and one of my all time favorite songs!! Interesting story albeit kind of lengthy for you molly fans...last year in early may I took a vacation down to middleburg Florida to ride motorcycles with my brother as he lives down there. On may 17th we wound up at the American legion on 218 in middleburg to throw back a few before heading home. It was a Tuesday night and getting pretty late with just a few of us up at the bar When we overheard the door man ask the bar tender if a member of molly hatchet could come in for a night cap. We looked at each other like no way! Well of course she said yes and in walked Dave hlubek and his lady friend. She sat next to me and Dave sat on the other side of her at the bar. I nodded to them as if to say hey and they ordered their drinks. Hers was non alcoholic as she was driving. My brother and I talked about whether we should acknowledge that we knew who he was but we also didn't want to bother them. So I had a idea that I thought might get his attention. I've got an app on my phone called touch tunes where you can play the juke box off of your phone via internet. So from my bar stool on my phone I looked up (dreams I'll never see) and hit play. We waited to see if he had any reaction. Well he did! When the song started playing he got a big grin on his face and looked around and said-that's me! And done a little bit of an air guitar to the riff. Well that broke the ice and I admitted to playing it. We all laughed and introduced ourselves. For the next 1/2 hour or so we talked about various things, a little about skynyrd and how Dave knew ronnie real well. They both were the nicest people and we had a great time. As they were leaving we ended up getting a pic with them. Never dreamed I'd get to play that song to Dave hlubek! Lol true story

That's a great story. I have one myself it was back when Molly Hatchet toward with 38 special in the outlaws it was at the Hollywood sportatorium down in Miami after the concert me and my buddies decided to go to a bar where a band called Dixie was playing. When we got into the bar Dixie just finished their last song and went on break so we ordered our drinks and we're sitting at the table and the next set came up and Molly Hatchet walks on stage and plays the whole set they were friends with the band dixie and came there to party after the concert that was a great night and one that I will remember for the rest of my life. These guys were awesome musicians and just all-around great guys.

What a rockin band. It's so sad that Danny Joe was lost so early. You can tell that he has issues in this video. He's sweating profusely, while the other band member's have no sweat at all. Diabetes is such an awful disease. RIP Danny Joe. You fronted something that was very special.

They were all sweatin by this part of the show. Perkin's Palace had the worst cooling system of the venues this size, and these were the finale of the show. Did I mention how loud but clear the mix was that night? The crowd was wild and the whole show was just magic!

My band opened up for them in 1991 and they were awesome on every level. Down to earth cool people. Danny Joe was the best guy ever. Very underrated southern rock band. Was a privilege to play with them. Miss Danny Joe a lot. I cried when he passed.

What a great band! I remember buying Flirtin' with Disaster when it came out. There's more than few of their songs in my life soundtrack. Brings back great memories.

Had a chance to see them in '78 and these boys ROCKED THE HOUSE! They all have so much fun on stage and you can tell they love what they do!! Long live southern rock!!

graham hedrick Yep. I turned 13 in late 1980, so my teenage years were during that decade. I listened to what accurately should have been referred to as "alternative rock", which means heavy metal and hard rock. Because the local Philly radio stations weren't playing much of it. You rarely heard Molly Hatchet or Rainbow or ANY metal bands on radio. But by this time, I've also come to like a lot of the popular "80's music" that was played on the radio back then. But after the 80s ended, music began a slow decline in quality, that became an all out sprint in about 2000! Nowadays it's often painful to my ears to turn on the radio. These new pop acts are making FAR more money to make FAR worse music!

Absolute fucking best music generation. Real music, real talent.

EPIC!! Grew up listening to Molly Hatchet and all the southern rock great. This kids, is as good as it gets.

I'm on the wrong side of 50 yrs. Old This was our music, late 70's early 80's. It's really great to see the next generation of rock fans discover these legends...keep it alive!!!

Sorry to say an era gone by, however we in the 70’s got to experience thee best Rock music!

All due respect to Skynryd, but NOBODY in southern rock EVER brought this same kind of energy, bar NONE!!!!

This song is so relatable for us all .DREAMS WE WILL NEVER SEE .LIFES JUST TO SHORT .LIVE ON PLAY ON AND ON .

For years all I heard on the radio was flirting with disaster but I love this song so much more. That riff just stays with you.

I saw these guys in ‘79. Of course I was blitzed, but what a show! Been in love with their music even when the vast majority of people couldn’t stand that guys voice. Long live Hatchet.

It was 2005 and a very sad day since then.

The music of my youth...definetely the best time of Molly Hatchet - wish I could turn time back to this time - sure its impossible.

The classic lineup, the first two albums. I was there, this was the first concert I ever saw where they actually sounded like their records. Most bands back then simply jammed, as a guitarist myself it blew me away how tight they sounded!

Also a guitarist, and I need to second that statement. The original Hatchet lineup (the one shown here--Roland, Hlubek, and Holland) were better in terms of staying in tune and in synch with each other than the far better known Lynyrd Skynyrd. Though at the time, we considered Duane Roland the lead in terms of pure chops, in all of the live vids you can find with this trio in the late 70s and early 80s . . . . Hlubek and Holland don't give an inch. So tight, so much fun to watch. I didn't get to see this lineup unfortunately. I did see Hatchet in upstate NY in a huge roadhouse. Roland and Hlubek handled all of it superbly, and they had a real grand piano on stage--that balance was extraordinary. Must have been 1000 bikers there and they just damn blew the roof off.

I, along with Robert Plant, John Bonham, Ozzy Osbourne, Jackson Browne, Stevie Nicks, Steven Tyler, Ronnie VanZant, Steve Winwood, Klaus Meine, Leo Sayer, John Evan, Kenny Jones, Glen Fry, Cat Stevens, Mick Taylor, and a whole list of others, were all born in 1948. We and most unfortunately our music, are indeed the last of a dying species

+Russ Ahrens :) Your taste in music FAR EXCEEDS that of most everyone I know, as those who are, too often, in traffic beside me at any given red light, blasting whatever the garbage is with their windows rolled down. Ugg! Thank goodness for your/our generation. (Anyone ever think some Rap or Gangstah band is going to have "reunion tours" or fame 40-50 years from now? ) What we've experienced (real R&R) is rare, and we're blessed to have observed it live, up close & personal. It is sad that our music and ourselves are the last of a dying species. And, genre. :( Most recently, RIP Riff West (11/19/14), and Bruce Crump (03/16/15). I miss and love my Molly Hatchet rhythm section, and especially, my Riffie. :(

I too am on the bad side of 50, my daughter is now 32 years old and sometimes she sneaks over to her pops and we get drunk and listen to this old music I raised her on. I think I did alright. She always complains that she was born at the wrong time In history, I said sweety I have all the albums. I gave her most of my collection and it drivers her husband crazy that she loves the older Rock and Roll.

Danny always looked like he was having a great time. But also looked like he would kick your ass!!

I saw these guys twice. Once indoors and once outside. Both shows were killer! They really got the crowd into it. It was good Rock n Roll, and something we are really missing today. Those were great times and I miss them.

Eric Walker how do you know that? With videos like this I am sure young musicians will use some of it and create their own sounds. I remember when I was a kid and older people would say we didn't know what good music was because we didn't want to play Buddy Holly or Elvis but they were influential. Music and everything else changes but if you listen and look you will see and hear all of the various influences from Chuck Berry, Little Richard etc. I am just happy that there are still bands who actually play instruments with all of the computer stuff that is available.

This brings it all back. Were all around 18. Swinging from a rope into a river. Some beer, some smoke. Cars parked all around. One with house speakers hooked up to it sitting on the roof, jamming out!

I miss the days of 3-guitar bands, generally the southern rock ones like .38, Skynyrd, etc. I miss real music. I'm stuck in the 70-80s. We will never see the likes of this again.

That's an awesome thing to say and thank all of you ladies as us Southern boys love y'all to and I have played music myself for over 25 years and been up and down the Eastern United States and enjoyed every minute of it. Seen these guys and all the other southern rock bands many many times Ive partied with the majority of them also and I can't think of one that wasn't just down to earth good ole boys even after all the fame etc. That says alot about how we were all raised here in the south

Danny Joe , a guy with tons of charisma ! And the band were always among the best in the South. I love this song.

The "real Molly Hatchet!! Did anyone know that Lynyrd Skynyrd was in the process of producing them when they had the airplane crash? If Skynyrd thought Hatchet was a winner, they were. They would have been icons if they had all lived. They already toured around the globe.

I think I've played this song at least a dozen times today after hearing it while working out at the gym... Danny Joe Brown's vocals with the hard rock guitars are awesome... He looked so happy to be performing. I've got Dreams too.

You are absolutely on point. For my money, there was no better trio ever in any genre when it came to pure guitar chops. Roland, Hlubek, and Holland were each exceptional lead players. But far more than that, each of them were exceptional RHYTHM players. I'm always surprised how few front rank guitarists are actually great at both forms. But ADD to that how well they switch off. AND not just switch off, but can have two or all three synch on a lead, or two or all three harmonize on a lead. And the final key element is that they almost always were able to get in and out of the swaps with the overall balance still basically flawless. The tone, tune, volume all work in any combination. I don't find that with any of the other contemporary southern rock lineups that ever used a trio, including Skynyrd. So why did Holland leave relatively early? I think he came back once. But the lineups after the original one in this video changed endlessly from then on. And you can tell (hear) right away from any post-original Hatchet lineup vid it was NEVER was anywhere NEAR this good again. So Holland was clearly essential to how well this worked. Maybe it was an ego thing?

Danny Joe had a mountain of charisma - and a stage presence second-to-none. His performances were electrifying. RIP Danny Joe.

I still love this, it's my party, cut ties on many relationships when people exposed themselves as fake friends. We do not have to be tied to people who drag us down for their own benefit. Dreams are still good, the best is yet to come.

First heard Molly Hatchet when I landed on Okinawa in 1980. Flirtin with Disaster is my all time favourite.

I don't know but my middle of the road station in Southern Oregon would play "Flirting' With Disaster" on weekend nights, and I am forever grateful. Molly Hatchet, you've always got a home here. :D

One of my freaking fav songs never gets old

Brown's voice would probably make just about any human being happy, it makes me happy. Ya damn sure know what i mean. I had to come back and edit to say that it is so good to see a musician smiling at the fans, you do not always get that. It is so nice to see even if it is old footage.

Gotta say it again....WHAT A KICK-ASS SHOW!
