Moles may appear cute, but by Christ, they have a hell-of-a-bite. I've had a few hang onto my fingers on more than one occasion! My best ''mole memory'' was when I was about 18, home on leave from the Army, and I was out shooting in the field for rabbits. I always had a pack with a flask of coffee and a sandwich. So, one day, I was taking a rest, sat on some waste ground, and half-way through my coffee, I felt the earth move a bit under my bum. I moved across a bit, and a few seconds later, up came this mole-hill, and along with it, the mole sticking it's head out. I never moved, and just happily watched him (or her) create something I've never seen created ''live'' before. (usually, you just awake and there are heaps of mole-hills everywere. In later years, when I came out of the Army, I continued shooting (as a pest controller) on a golf course (MASSIVE rabbit and mole problem). For the moles, we used small metal traps in the tunnels, that were like 2 scissor clips that sprung shut on the mole as they passed through the trap. It took about 3 months, from start to finish, to clear a full size 18 hole golf course. Pelts were sold to a local who used them for lining hand-made waistcoats (vests) - on the condition that we skinned the moles first and cured the skins! And by gawd, have you ever tried skinning a mole? Intricate work, and for the size of the pelts, you only got about 50p (75 cents) per skin. You had to catch hundreds of the little buggers to make any money!
