Molasses As Fertilizer - Sometimes All Your Garden Needs Is Sugar

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It may sound wacky, but you should really consider using molasses as fertilizer in your organic garden. You can use molasses as fertilizer because microbes need sugar. Read more here: www.smilinggardener.com/fertil...

    Thank you! I make Kefir water so I already now how very IMPORTANT Molasses was to microorganisms. Molasses is packed with nutrients, minerals and trace minerals that my pro-biotic kefir grains LOVE LOVE LOVE ! I built a raised bed this fall to over winter for my first really seriously focused organic garden in the spring!, it has rock dust, green sand, and many other organic additives to really enrich the soil for those nutrient dense and healthy veggies! I've also started daily (as long as the ground is not frozen hard) throwing my extra kefir grains into my raised bed dirt now, stirring them in repopulating the soil with all of their billions of microbes. I was wondering, does it make since to throw extra whole sugar into the bed? Not sure if the idea of Molasses right now in the cold is the best idea, but I have plenty organic whole sugar crystals I can toss and stir (my bed is about 8x8ft). The dry sugar, I know the dry sugar (when they get wet/rain) will feed the kefir grains bacteria that I have in there, although it is winter time, so I would think alot of the kefir grain bacteria/yeast would go dormant, but the sugar would give them food if they woke up, and then save the liquid Molasses once spring started? What do you think?

    Sure, dry sugar can be helpful in the garden, too. I wouldn't spend too much time doing it over winter, but definitely during the growing season.

    definitely the molasses.I live in NYC,about 1 mile from former WTC and never even saw a blackfly in my apartment.Ever. Then as soon as I used the molasses i started seeing them. actually within 2 days. The Gnats are a different plague altogether because I haven't been able to completetly rid my apt. of them, although I don't see them in great numbers. The plants really suffered and i had to get rid of them too.

    For all that are nay-sayers of the 'molasses', the reason why molasses is great is not very much the sugar content, although partly but also minimally, its the nutrients that are tied to the molasses that make it a magic addition to the application. Molasses has trace minerals that no other common spray has, and it is not expensive, it is easy to apply. When I add molasses to my Kefir grains, it has nothing to do with the sugar, as I add whole sugar separately, but it is for the HEALTH of the bacteria. When I 'forget' to add molasses, I have difficulty with the Kefir grains becoming unbalanced, they stop reproducing at high rates, they start to give poor quality kefir water , the Molasses is the magic vitamin pill for microorganisms!

    Absolutely, molasses does have some nice nutrients, but the sugar in it is definitely important too - microbes need their carbs :)

    I don't know about using molasses in every situation. I used a very diluted amount in my indoor garden and wound up throwing my plants out due to their getting infested with blackflies and fungus gnats. It took a month to rid the blackflies but the gnats never completely died off. I still have gnats showing up but under control. Never had them prior to using molasses.

    i would like to use this method to help out my plants outside because i know every plants food source is mainly the sugars it produces for itself. But, one issue i have with feeding my plants sugar is that i have an ant problem in my garden and the sugar really encourages the ants to eat and destroy my plants. :( so unfortunately, it does more bad than good. Is there anything else i can do?

    I wonder what using sugar, honey, molasses, or whatever would do for sick trees? I wonder, also, what impact, if any, it would have on the insects, their eggs, worms, etc., that have infested so many trees, such as ash trees? I wonder if varying amounts of sweetness would have different outcomes. I wonder if using an amount that might almost kill the tree, but not quite, might kill the insects at different stages, especially honey or mollasses?

    hi phil I enjoy your vids. I have an observation concerning molasses. Sugar cane does not provide much if any molasses, when I worked as an electrician for a sugar company, I was told our company sold molasses to c and h sugar from Hawaii and all cane sugar. so most if not all molasses comes from sugar beets. now the problem is sugar beets are one of the most heavily gmo plant ever. so here we go, perhaps pure cane sugar would give the needed carbs?

  • @aahpmcj7

    Sugar is a simple carbon. Most bacteria can only break down one carbon at a time. Fungi have the ability to break down chains of carbons. Bacteria tire at the amount of energy they have to expend to break down chains of carbons. They move on to simple carbons. If you want to have bacterially dominated tea, feeding it fish emulsion is a waste. Likewise if you want a fungally dominated tea, feeding it molasses will cause the bacteria to grow because they move faster than fungi.

    I've learned that applying molasses to the soil may encourage candida in the soil - not sure just how big of an issue it is, but I tend to use molasses mainly for foliar applications, which is where the liquid form works best.

  • @aahpmcj7
    @aahpmcj712 жыл бұрын

    Molasses feeds bacteria, fish or kelp fertilizer feeds fungi. Fungi breaks down complex carbon not bacteria. Please make sure that the molasses is unsulfured or it is useless. If you want the microbes to "stick" to your foliage when using a compost tea, it must be aerated for 24 hrs. If the microbes are actively growing, they produce a glue that will help them "stick" to foliage. Your gardens look nice.

    Hi I have 2 questions about this video. 1. Wont the microbes prefer carbohydrates at its purest form which is glucose? (The plants produces glucose already.) 2. Will using molasses increase the aphid population? How- 1 molasses attract ants on plants 2 aphids colonize the plants 3 ladybugs try to eat dirty little aphids to save the plant 4 ants in turn prey on ladybugs 5 aphids infest plants without fear of ladybugs The circle of life.lol.

    molasses increases the microbes in the soil. It's basically like a carbohydrate for the plant as well. It's an indirect fertilizer, however most molasses does contain potassium.
