The trick is to not be a casual and move the camera yourself without locking on, in some cases this will even help you against bosses. It's easy as shit to do in DS1 through 3, although in Nioh 2 it may be harder due to the stance system and all that other jazz.

@Paul, hard disagree. It's a big part of why Dark Souls 1 was so great, and it's hardly long at all. The time you spend traversing to another level lets you wind down from in between intense fights, lets you take in the scenery, and discovering secret passageways and shortcuts can feel rewarding. When done right, seeing how all the different levels are connected is amazing. Sure, they have shortcuts and secrets in Nioh, but when the maps are a lot smaller, it's just not as necessary or rewarding. Creates immersion and tells a story if you're looking for it, but if you aren't, I can see why it might seem uninteresting. One's not necessarily better than the other, it just comes down on how either is executed--I really enjoyed how the nexus worked in Demon Souls. End of the day, they're just two different storytelling methods. In this game, it makes sense, according to what Jen says, because it's so spread out over many years. I've seen it work in other games, but maybe this just worked better for them.

For instance, Enera ( 7:20 ) has pillars in his boss room that you have to make him attack to make water drop on him. You can beat him without it, but he’s gona feel like he has an unfair health pool if you don’t use the water.

The reason why people do low damage is because literally 99% of players don't know about the skill Flux, it allows you to double and triple Ki recovery by stance changing after Ki pulse, which also happens to quickly cancel recovery animations and allow you to do normally impossible infinite combos that can even kill bosses once they break. Flux I and II are activated by changing stance once and twice immediately after Ki pulsing, doubling and tripling Ki recovery, giving you more Ki than you have at the start of the combo. Basically if you land a high stance attack, you Ki pulse with R1, then R1 + Square for mid stance, R1 + X for low stance, simple as that. This also means that you can recover Ki infinitely in Dark realms, combined with increased anima and amrita regen, Dark realms become an overall buff for you to destroy bosses instead of turtling until the realm ends.

I actually thought the mission system was pretty refreshing. Especially since playing this directly after the souls series, the linearity made for a nice change and allows you to focus more on the combat, which is so clearly the main focus of Nioh 2. Sometimes the exploration in the souls games can get very tedious at stages, exploring in more confined areas was a nice addition I feel.

I have to disagree with the thing about the missions. The missions are like an hour and a half each, and at the end of them you feel like you're getting a break and going home. I don't get the point about taking you out of the action, because Dark Souls does the exact same thing. You have to go back to your hub to do things like upgrade weapons, but new stuff, restock on resources, or talk to NPC's. The only difference is that Nioh streamlines that system. As for the menus, yeah fair point. The menus can definitely be clunky, but they aren't within a light-year of how bad Nioh 1's skill menu was.

I beat Ds3 and i was Hankering for another Souls-like and Nioh 2 delivered so well on that front. Hell i put more hours into Nioh 2 than ds3 (ds3 has like 66, nioh 2 has 104) and had a much much more enjoyable time with Nioh 2 than ds3. Ds3 is absolutely legendary in terms of its impact on other games, but Nioh 2 is exactly what im looking for in a game with heavy emphasis on Melee combat. Ds3 was simple, but played off its simplicity to create amazing combat puzzles relying on the players creativity and skill to complete said puzzle. Nioh 2 played off of that but added in a more complex, faster paced combat system where the game created combat puzzles that the player had to solve using timing, creativity, skill, and knowledge of what to do in the moment. Ds3 was a lot of "hit r1 when the time is right" (and no that isn't a bad thing, just simple) whereas nioh 2 was "here's an enemy, here are the combos and moves you can do, take them out however you like" and i prefer that over Ds3. Nioh 2 is in my opinion an incredibly solid souls like that i think everyone should at least try. It can be brutal at first, but once you get used to its system, you'll have a wonderful time

It's awesome to hear a review praise Nioh's story and lore, because it's straight up the entire Sengoku era's real history and mythology. People think soulsbourne has deep lore, but Nioh's lore is literally found in hundreds if not thousands of years of artifacts and writing in museums. You can trace the lineage of samurai and their clans for hundreds of years of real history, and along with myths for thousands of years back to China and India. You can find weapons and armor in real world museums, learn about their blacksmiths, the year they were made in, the owners of the weapons, the number of kills each blade had. You can visit the real world locations of each mission, learn about the builders of the castles, the temples, the inhabitants and clans who defended them. And even Yokai designs are straight up taken from ancient paintings and made 3D. Also it's not just the visuals, the story is told in such a way that it is very close to what happened in history, but where ever there were gaps in historical knowledge, they cleverly filled in with original story details, especially with the involvement of yokai, spirits and gods. Even without talking about gameplay, it is just such a passionately crafted game where every single detail is made with real tireless research and decision making.

4:15 That criticism perfectly encapsulated my experience and feeling towards nioh. i love nioh as much as the souls series and it does so much right, i should like it more but i didn't. i felt like i couldn't put together a proper critique on why i didn't like the levels that much. it's a core design choice that does what it's supposed to but i didn't enjoy that kind of exploration. The sum of all the little things add to a more whole experience and the final verdict and i think everything else is a positive but the levels and the other qol things that could've been made makes the game like 8.5/10 from a possible 10/10. for me at least.

I disagree about the mission system. It is actually extremely good and not really something that's necessarily bad just because it's not souls-like. The Missions can be played and revisited at any time for extra drops, weapon upgrades, specific grind or stuff like that. Although it's nice to have a variety of interconnected lucrative passages that potentially can bring you somewhere, the sheer linearity of some often makes it more of a chore than enjoyment. In Nioh 2 you have a starting position and an end point, a typical Level design that's present in over 70% of video-games since the 1980s. Not sure that a mission system can be even seen as a negative trait, it's a design choice for this particular style of the game which tells a story based of historic segments which also corresponds to the historic battles in Feudal Japan. If you're not a fan of Samurai Warriors, then you wouldn't know.

Yeah, I agree. I love soulslikes and metroidvanias. Exploring labyrinths that lead all the way over to some shit I've never seen or a shortcut to a resting place is always fun, but the missions in Nioh 2 were actually refreshing since I might love exploring, but I get lost all the damn time lol(it's not the games' fault, it's me of course) so just getting to pick an area knowing where I start, and where I end without the risk of a few minutes of headscratching wondering where to go was a nice change of pace

  • @nentj

    @nentj

    2 жыл бұрын

@@battousaix4263 Indeed. I actually consider "Hand-holding" somewhat disposed or not properly attuned. Soulslike games in general are very limiting in terms of the exploration. You can explore as much as you want, but you are stuck in one place and you can't really get lost or stumble upon something akin to the open-world games/RPGs. With that logic the game is still holding your hands because you can't really progress further unless you beat a specific boss of the region or have an item that will open the passage for you or similar. Sure, there might not be a clear sign for you to get to that location and you might be going in circles until you accidentally find out where you're supposed to go, but saying how Nioh2 is holding your hands just because it has a mission system and that's taken as something "easier" is wrong on so many levels. Ironically, such sentiments remind me of the early misplaced criticism of the Dark Souls as the worst port on the PC ever made and a super limiting arcade-like gameplay that PC enthusiasts were talking about left and right. I knew back then that such sentiments were misplaced because Dark Souls was a video-game in an era where video-games have sort of lost their intrinsic value and meaning. It's not wonder that it created its own genre of RPGs or Action-Adventures. With a mission based system the Framerate is also increased, which allows for more enemies, and computing power. The system in Nioh2 on its own is perfectly fine, so jabbing at it is seriously misplaced as a valid criticism, even for the sake of the aesthetics. And it's not even such a big part of Soulslike games to have hidden corridors leading you to special places, more so because you can literally teleport around. Hidden enemies, hidden traps, dangers, stuff like that is the epitome of Soulslike games and Nioh2 is FILLED with such scenarios, making even the veteran Dark Souls/Sekiro players to ragequit constantly.

I personally think the main missions level design really stepped up. The second level alone is so intricate and full of optional stuff and different routes. If theyd stopped using the mission system the level desgin probably would have suffered a lot. Even in Dark Souls it was really only the first one that accomplished the vertical world instead of the super linear Dks2 and Dks3 worlds. I do not like the mission system but the verticality in most soulslike is just illusion whilst also focusing on great level design. Nioh does not give you that illusion but sort of accomplishes better level design and gives you many optional side missions for farming certain item sets. I dont think Team Ninja wouldve been able to create a world such as the first half of Dark Souls 1 so im all in favor of abandoning even the thought and giving us greatly designed levels. Its been 3 years since I played a new soulslike that I wholeheartedly enjoyed and Im glad for that after the disappointment Sekiro was in terms of replayability and role playing aspects.

"Accidentally swing at a rock? Turns out that rock is a wall and it one-shots you." Ah, see, now that's relevant to me, because I came home from my aunt's house yesterday, and my cousins have the PS4 port of "Dad of BOI" (Another game that kind of plays like Dark Souls, actually). I was in the Lake, and there were fire pots everywhere surrounded by rock outcroppings, so I thought, "Okay, let's blow these things up, they're in my way.", but the game decided to hide a Soul-Stealer next to one of the big red chests (That was also covered in rocks), so I unwittingly ended up waking the thing by blowing up its bed. XD

Both agree and disagree with the mission system, I can understand playing solo you would prefer the exploration however look at the multiplayer in games like darksouls, the mission system is specifically there to aid replayability and multiplayer, something that isnt possible with openworld without some convoluted system in place, nioh intends you to fight bosses more than once and not just in new game plus but multiple times per game cycle, they intend you to get a gear set more than once, dark souls you kill the boss and move on, you get a unique weapon and move on, both have their merits and downfalls.

Its more like Diablo 2's Nightmare and Hell. There's even a 138 floor dungeon unlocked at NG++++........ I cannot emphasize enough how good and huge this game is. Three times bigger than Elden Ring and its new dlc 100%

REALLY late but the system is already deeper than any other souls like games. Would it hurt to be an open world game? Probably not but is it really necessary? I dont think so either. Team Ninja made the right choice by sticking to it it’s original formula and just improving upon it like adding burst counters and Yokai skills. Other than that, there are definitely some missions that are just tedious but the overall enjoyment balances it out. Great game from them. Still playing it till to this day 😂 Edit: Camera? I never had a problem with that sht unless I corner myself.

It comes down to personal preference, both games are great in their own way. I could see Nioh being overwhelming for some people, but I think the combat itself is better than Sekiro. You have so much control over your moveset and all 9 weapon types feel extremely different from one another. It also has one of the best character creator I’ve ever seen. On the other hand, Sekiro has much better level design and the combat is very unique (the posture and deathblow system). You only get your katana for a weapon but the shinobi tools make up for that. But the best part of Sekiro is definitely the boss fights, it just feels so good. TL;DR: both are great.

The main reason for the mission system(other than allowing the game to play at 60fps on console) is because there are YEARS passing by throughout the game. You're going to completely different locations in real world Japan in different timelines. It doesn't tie together like a souls game, because it's not a story told in one short period of time, it spans across like 30 years and in completely different locations.

When it's depleted they enter a staggered state where you can perform a grapple attack and take off a massive chunk of their health. It's almost mandatory when dealing with Yokai enemies and bosses I gotta say this is a MASSIVE improvement over the first game where almost all of the Yokai WERE pure damage sponges with nothing to really mitigate it, which really killed the flow of combat. Giving us the ability to grapple Yokai as well as human enemies is such a simple yet amazing change and I can't thank Team Ninja enough for it
