The pressure of humanity's failings can certainly weigh on scientists a lot, so it's quite natural for them to take risks in the name of progress. If you've seen the Netflix show 'Arcane', you may already be familiar with this concept. There's 2 characters from that show in particular that share a very similar ideology, but I won't go into detail incase you haven't seen it.

I love moira for this specific reason. a ton of people think she's just purely evil, but I think she really does just care about learning, and nothing can stop her from continuing to learn. if moira were just evil and liked torturing people and animals, would she inflict decay upon herself? of course not. she does it purely to continue learning (and most likely, she's found that she is her own best test subject). and I think, in a lot of ways, that's beautiful. also incredibly stupid, to most people, but I don't think moira cares about her own life, credibility, career, or wellbeing, she only cares about progress and knowledge. and I can respect that, honestly.

One of my headcanon is that she used herself as a test subject when she suspected Overwatch was about to kick her out and before she knew the existence of Blackwatch. In her origin story trailer we see that it is the last thing she did before having to pack things up. So I like to think she was ready to use herself as a test subject to try and prove to Overwatch that her research on evolution wasn't all that bad but still got removed from the organization.

It’s a matter of perspective. Like Zen said: “Someone always cares, you must simply seek them out.” Moira is dedicated to her craft and wants to find a way to regress decay, even if she takes her own life doing so. Lifeweaver however, seems to care in a way, given how he sounds worried in one of their interactions: Lifeweaver: “What is your fascination with artificial decay?” Moira: “To reverse entropy we must tame it.” Lifeweaver: “But inflicting it on yourself? You’re withering away!” Moira: “I’ve always thrived under a deadline.” Moira does not care, but Lifeweaver does. That’s what makes it depressing. Then again, it’s a matter of perspective.

I think Moira's character as a whole is what's depressing. She herself may not be particularly sad or distressed in any way, but you can clearly tell that she's likely just adapted to her shitty life. I see her as one of those "It is what it is" characters. No matter what pain or difficulties she may experience, it means nothing to her as long as she just keeps working. She's an obsessed workaholic with ambitions that are clearly beyond her grasp, yet she constantly pursues them nonetheless, even though it may break her. I think the saddest part of her character is her desperation for understanding of science and the evolution of mankind. An ambition always in the back of her mind, yet so far out of reach.... Or who knows, maybe I'm just looking into it too much🤷‍♂️

It’s not depressing cuz she’s getting exactly what she wants and by her convos with mercy, genji, & sombra, it’s apparent she wouldn’t consider her own life “shitty”. Arguably, we don't even know her motives. People wake up in the morning and decide to paint their bedroom, or try a new hairstyle because they feel ambitious. Nobody just turns to unethical science to reverse decay, at a potential risk to their own life, as an attempt to perfect the human genome just because they woke up one day feeling ambitious. I have a feeling that there's most likely something that happened to cause the unethical experimentation. Something we might find out eventually. Or would have, if some sort of PvE campaign were happening. Which it isn't.

If so, we have an opportunity of a great conclusion to the story of two rivals: after succeeding in her findings and discovering a way to literally reverse aging and death, Moira is met on her deathbed by Angela, saying that through all the horrors she caused and endured, she finally found a way to make people's lives better. Angela comes to realisation of what Moira had achieved, and tried to help her, but ultimately failed. Dying, Moira gives Angela all of the rights to use and develop her discoveries, because, at the end of the day, both of them were serving one goal - to make world a better place. After Moira's death, Angela forgives her enemy and firstly thinks of following her last wish, using the data as her own, but at the end decides that because of the horrible methods of collecting that data, she won't be able to live peacefully if she labels it as her discoveries, ultimately giving the credit to Moira O'Dornan while presenting the data to the global science and continuing the work in the memory of her past rival.

Mercy has developed technology to decrease aging, but only used it in herself. She also has a no harm policy and uses her scientifical discoveries to heal people, hence the primary gun. The problem of this all is that she rivals with Moira, that has a sped-up deadline on her lifespan and ignores moral values when testing. the mercy and moira interactions only really make me dislike mercy more tbh. i dont condone the things moira has done but damn atleast she actually cares about helping people get better to the point that shes experimenting on herself and risking her own death. the frustration in the line “how it must feel to be entitled to patience” plays it out perfectly

you don't wanna know how many cute animals are sacrificed for research every year. this is a thing that kinda bothers me about how they make moira seem vile for experimenting on rabbits like sure..it's sad but realistic. Tbh mercy feels like such a fake in comparison because no way can you scientifically advance like her without experimenting on animals at least several times, i mean it would be kinda reckless to work directly on people the first times, if you think about it.

That's why she even says that line about how she'd rather wait for progress than "do harm", not realizing that most of the healing she does to people most very likely comes from other researchers who pushed the boundaries.

@@amos_fr6070 frankly i'm not so sure but didn't she create the nano technology she uses for healing (the tech that Ana suposedly stole from her). This is why Moira respects her so much (when she tells her she can come to Oasis) despite Mercy's constant jabs at her. And creating such technology out of nothing, without any proper testing on something else prior to testing it on people and for that thing to just work perfectly because Mercy is so talented seems kinda...unrealistic but I digress, it's some game lore we're talking abt anyway. So in a way I'd say that she was at one point a scientist even if she curently does more healing than research.

The pause after weavers interaction followed up by a joke to play it off says a lot about her. She is undeniably a bad person however she definitely wasn’t always that way considering she had to take a moment to process that weaver wasn’t expressing any negative emotions towards her other than pure concern for her wellbeing, and since she never really receives any type of positive interactions she doesn’t know how to properly reply about her situation she just plays it off.

For anyone wondering Moira is essentially a portrayal of Jeckyl and Hyde; someone who meant well but became corrupted by their own works. She is evil but more so in a way that she’s less empathetic. She doesn’t care, all she wants is to complete her experiments. Moira has the potential to be a good person but she’s let herself be consumed by her work for far too long. That’s why Angela brings up their “ethical obligations” because at the end of the day, Moira is still a doctor. One who prefers to prioritize her own madness over the safety of her patients or rather test subjects.

There's an interesting connection between Moira and Reaper's powers. Both of their attacks have a form of lifesteal, and both of them have abilities that makes them ethereal. In Overwatch 1, there was a common theory that Mercy held some responsibility for Reaper's condition but that Moira turned the condition into a weapon. If that's true, she may have also proliferated those abilities to herself, which would explain why she, too, is withering now.

Only really "depressing" line out of all of this is Lifeweaver's one. She seems in control in all other interactions and has some wit to parry jabs at herself, but not here. She slips a bit, it almost looks defensive. Doesn't help at all, that Niran is basically only one who is expressing concern towards her and not distaste, disgust or simple formal etiquette. Genevieve's delivery is so absurdly good.
