If you take a longer peice and encircle the entire brim, you can mold and shape the brim exactly how you want it. Everyone of my boonies have been done this way. I won't wear one without my bailing wire. It's how you perfect a damn near perfect piece of kit.

Sounds great. An untouched gem right there. Would you just make one cut and use one wire?

I inserted a length of stainless steel safety wire in the brim that can be used as a snare or garrote if needed.

Not bad but go to the center rear where the edging comes together, you can push a piece of bailing wire completely around and shape that thing how ever you want, all the way around

Man what a great idea. I would get a lighter and melt the little slit that way it keeps it closed and prevents unwanted frays

I would use a "U" shaped channel made out of pewter about 3/8 of an inch on each wing, so that way I can crimp it into the front part of the hat, and shape it as I wish Afterwards when I no longer need it like that, I can just remove it and it enables me to fold or roll the hat into a tight tube, to put into a small vest, or pen pockets.

Too bad they just don't make the hat with the wire already in the brim.

You can do it for the entire perimeter with a similar type wire or install weed whacker line for the remaining perimeter.

We used to just trim off the outer 3/4" and leave the edges frayed. The idea is to obscure the head silhouette so you don't look like a guy wearing a big ass brimmed hat. It also prevents the brim from dropping when your coming out of water, which was common. The pacific area

My Boonie hats I cut off the brim. The brim is too wide and obstructs the view. Plus over time, the frayed edges age well.
