Modi govt's PM Gati Shakti - Why is it called a game changer for infra sector?

Since it was launched in 2021, over 600 layers of data of 24 central ministries have been mapped on the Gati Shakti National Master Plan, giving a bird’s eye view of the country’s infrastructure and logistics facilities/assets on a GIS map. Just at the click of a mouse, ministries can visualise their proposed projects vis-à-vis other assets passing through the same route and also check against any obstacles coming in the way at the planning stage itself. ThePrint's Moushumi Das Gupta explains.

The foundations of a strong nation lie in the infrastructure it develops. USA, Europe & China all built their infrastructure top class and hence they developed so fast. Roads, railways, transportation. These are the fundamnetals. Super happy that GOI has kept it the top most priority.

China also made another critical decision. In the late 90s and early 2000s it opened up and got many foreign countries to invest, like Japanese, Taiwanese, and the US. They poured in FDI, helping build the railways and electronic assembly industries. China didn't worry about domestic competition at first. Those companies were just founded in the 2000s, they only became competitive in the 2010s decade. India should also try and get more FDI and sign trade deals with other countries, especially importing nations like the UK, even if there may be temporary negative impacts on the domestic industry. If you believe in India, then in the long run opening up foreign markets will be good for these companies.

We also require a CM Gati Shakti Masterplan on the lines of PM Gati Shakti. While PM Gati Shakti is for the National & States level, CM Gati Shakti would be at the State & Local level. This masterplan should be shared between State Government & Local Government/Municipal Corporation. I am sure all of us have witnessed the gross mismanagement & lack of coordination between State & Local Government, specially when it comes to planning infrastructure creation within cities. In cities we can see a newly constructed road get dug up by another Department of the same Government since they want to lay optical fibres- why can't it be done at the same time when a gas pipeline or a sewage pipeline is being laid. Infact this reform needs to be implemented in 2 phases. In the first phase responsibilities can be clearly defined between State Government & Municipal Corporations- who is responsible for what. This needs to be done to avoid overlapping of duties & responsibilities. For eg. We have both PWD (State Government Department) & Municipal Corporations constructing roads in cities. We have both these governments also investing in Education & Healthcare. So there's a need to clearly define responsibilities between the two. For eg. What can be done is for State Government to focus on ensuring construction of District Hospitals, Medical Colleges in each district of State/UT while Municipal Corporations looks after construction & maintenance of Primary Healthcare Centers (commonly known as Mohalla Clinics, Anna Clinics etc.) within Cities, similarly for education and other sectors where primary schooling can be the responsibility of Corporations and secondary schooling as well as Colleges can be responsibility of State. Once the above reform is implemented, the second reform i.e CM Gati Shakti Masterplan can follow to enhance coordination between both the levels & also within different departments of a particular level.

Good explanation. A superb initiative, another step towards a developed Bharat. 👍 Now if such integrations could be brought into other sectors like education where they would be taught at a right age how to vote based on merit, how does these policies affect the common man, and other such useful and practical stuff then it would lead to formation of a good government and the people would be more involved in what is happening in the country, thus the people and the government could work in synergy rather than a massive divide between them that we are seeing today. Many people are ignorant when it comes to policies and rules and laws that affect their everyday lives. This ignorance is being used by corrupt people in power to take bribes, force people to submission, blackmail and other such filthy practices. I have experienced such things. I'm sure many people have experienced such things as well. while the institutions keep people in ignorance, the media doesn't help either, only a select few like the Print here actually bothers to take on such topics and issues. But if the people are taught properly, if they are aware, such corruption would drastically reduce leading to a more clean and efficient system. I hope such a day would come. Jai Hind!

It is funny that this can be a life changing development for Indian economy. Yet the mainstream media has never attempted a detailed presentation and status report on that. Every day the television channels have these putrid political slugfests . Like drugged villagers there is a nightly congregation of millions of viewers queing up to view these street fights. We need professional ratings of TV channels. Social media gives platform to serious channels like Print.

Actually this should be discussed by someone of the caliber of Nandan Nelakani....like Mr Chandra of Tata, or NN himself. These people explain the big pic very nicely.

This integration method of temporal and spatial planning data will definitely help in improving bureaucratic supervision and intervention strategies. Informal Information network similar to this is already in full fledged use by bureaucrats and politicians in acquisition of Benami land deals, construction projects and earthmover businesses, etc .

Government needs to put this kind of investment in education (especially primary) and hospitals. Cheaper quality education and hospitals will empower the poor. The huge section of our society needs these services badly for upliftment.

After roads.. India needs to eliminate poverty.. people living close to roads in unsafe conditions. They need basic good homes and a life where they can work and raise a family.
