A genius lyricist. Brock has a unique way of using oxymoronical dichotomies. I'm mostly into heavy metal. The Lonesome Crowded West in particular but other earlier Modest Mouse will always have a special place in my heart. It's whimsical, full of mood, evokes nostalgia and never fails to make me reminiscent.

hey man, I've been watching your reactions for a bit and I've paid a lot of attention to your Modest Mouse reactions because Isaac Brock's lyrics are really powerful no matter the context, even when he's choosing not to try his best. this song is super honest and straight-forward: Modest Mouse is ostensibly a touring band with a message from the 90's that they just couldn't keep lugging around past this point. World At Large feels almost like an apology that Isaac can't bring himself to worry or care about the entirety of the world, and can only bring himself to care about exactly what he already cares about. Realistically, the song is just about drifting and maintaining a drifter mentality. it always fascinated me WHY Isaac felt so attached to that mentality in the first place, and this song feels like it's supposed to explain that Isaac just wants to be understood. his message is similar to others', but it isn't like anyone else's. he doesn't drift because he hates who he finds along the way, he does so because no matter who or where he travels to it seems the world at large *hates him.* I'll say again that Night On The Sun is probably the most poignant piece of media to listen to and understand who Isaac Brock and who Modest Mouse are and always have been: people who want to make sure they're experiencing life in the same way as other people (derogatory)

I appreciate your honest and sincere reactions. If you like songs about nomads, check out Townes Van Zandt's "I'll be here in the Morning" and/or "To Live is to Fly"

I’m so glad you reacted to the live version. This very video is one of my favorite comfort watches of all time. It’s always interesting hearing other people’s perspectives on songs I love. For me, what is interesting about how Brock captures a nomadic lifestyle in this song is there’s a very distinct sense of sadness about it. Maybe that he feels like he doesn’t have any choice but to be a drifter, or that he feels like he’s already traveled everywhere but he’s still trapped in a sense, like the open road has become its own prison and he can’t find anywhere he can settle down. Also the strain it puts on his relationships and not being able to maintain them, like with the line “you said that you did, but you didn’t understand,” presumably the person he’s talking to not understanding his nomadic lifestyle. It is not without its troubles. Thanks again for sharing your experience thoughts on this one, love your reactions.

You know dude, we live in Hungary ( my sweetheart and me) and when I go somewhere, I always come back here to see how much worse living here is than where I was before. I sometimes build exhibitions and I got to know many people, but I got much closer to all of them in a few days there than to the sons of my country with whom I worked. It's wery sad for me! I really understand this song! :(

Modest Mouse is my favorite band. The sad truth is they are never as good live as their pre-recorded album stuff. IMO. Shame that most of the stuff you listen to is live only now due to copyright, but if you like a song of theirs, look up the album version, you may like the quality of vocals and instruments more.
