I just finished reading Ulysses and your video really made for a great reference on Modernist literature , there were these elements(as mentioned) in the novel, since this was my first modernist novel I was baffled at first by the Stream of Consciousness technique but it ultimately grew on me and I was able to enjoy the novel immensely.

It must not necesarrily be internaly linked but i find it interesting that introspection goes hand in hand with the detachment from the world here. like the the things happening ( ww1 eg.) were to cruel and inhuman to be real. So the outside looked at as something unreal while the personal contemplation of it was the main concern. The world still was their home though .

Thanks. I try and reply to every comment, and especially love when people ask questions. My favourite teacher used to say that, "the mark of an intelligent person is the questions that they ask." For me, the beauty of educational videos is that they can start a conversation, and I hope to always answer questions. I am starting a new job in January, which may slow me down a little! hello! I'm doing a project/presentation in college on modernism and war poetry. This has been very helpful, thank you so much, but what is Wilfred Owen? surely a modernist poet? or a Georgian poet?

I'd class Wilfred Owen as a war poet, rather than a modernist. However, you have to remember that war poet and modernist are just labels. Owen may have characteristics of modernist poets. It would be a valuable exercise for you to draw up a table with characteristics from war poetry and modernist poetry, and you can analyse Owen's poetry against the table and make up your own mind as to where it fits.

Hi Phoebe. Thanks for your feedback. I made the video to introduce a Year 11 class (17 year-olds) to the context, ideas, values and structure of Modernist literature. The video is generalist, but it's a start. Next year, the students will be studying T.S. Eliot for their HSC. For any HSC students reading this who haven't chosen a related text, a Modernist text is an excellent option, as there is so much to write about media of production, textual form, perspective and choice of language. Sorry to get sidetracked Phoebe. I realise you may not even be Australian or a student, so I'll get back to your question. In researching the video, I realised that I haven't read many of the poets and novelists that are considered 'great' Modernist writers. The writers I have read and recommend are: James Joyce - I love his novels. Virginia Woolf - Has a very distinctive, feminist voice. T.S. Eliot - Writes beautiful, fractured poetry. Samuel Beckett - Wrote novels, poetry and plays. I'd recommend his plays, as representing the bleakness of Modernist art. There are lots more Modernist writers. Please let me know if you find a fantastic one that you would recommend. Happy reading.

War poetry can be best seen in Wilfred Owen's poems about grotesque scenes of war. I would say the direct difference is the representation of actual death as opposed to the figurative death of London for example in Eliot's Waste Land or Prufrock. I know some people who disagree with Eliot's views. So it's relative. But in the case of Owen's poetry one cannot help but see death staring them in the face. so it seems to me absolute.
