To stop the frame rate drops turn off steam deck hold volume up and press power button then go to settings and then to buffer rate and change from 1g to 4g and it'll run perfectly as I'm playing it right now with the same sd card windows install :)

To clarify, click Setup Utility, then Advanced, then UMA Frame Buffer Size, change to 4G. Then exit and save changes.

@@fierce1343 nope just uses 4gig of vram instead of the default that valve set it to as 1 gig may take a bit more battery but that's about it really also I change back to 1gig when using steam os as I find it runs better but for Windows and games such as cod etc it's better to have 4gig v ram as it has no stutter or any fps drops

The hell? The game actually looks decent at 720p viewed on 1080 through YT. This is magic.

I'm really loving this newer deck footage, these games all still look amazing, and probably even better in person. Idk how the hell they got all of this power in such a small package.

@@Hijynx87 if you actually listen to the first 14 seconds of the video, the content creator mentions it won't work on SteamOS but it works on Windows booted Deck. Not that the Deck can't run it, it's just the anti-cheat protocol that linux doesn't support at the time being. That is what I am referring to. One must be cautious because studios like Bungie promise to ban people if you try to run it through SteamOS with tweaks. And to Activision Blizzard's credit, as well as to Valve's, MW2 runs insanely good on a device like Steam Deck. This game is by no means meant to run on Deck when it was being developed. Hopefully, in the future that will change.

Yeah man I build a pc 5 years a go and these handheld play better! I since upgraded my gpu but these Decks game!

Performance looks very stable! and I'm impressed that it can handle high settings on 720p as well.The only thing that sucks, is that the game requires Internet connection to play so it's not possible to play the Single Player campaign on the go without wifi..

So I need an SD card but idk if I want too big of a size if it's just for cod. Have you tried other games on the windows SD card and is it easy to install them? I assume booting via the card just means permanent desktop mode right? So I'm wondering if I should buy a large card for both windows and expandable storage

The fact that this runs as well as it does on Windows of all things and that this is the return of the Call of Duty franchise to Steam gives me hope that this will be playable on Steam os. Hopefully Activison doesn't pull a Bungie and screw over Linux users.

Activision doesn’t care, Linux player base is so small to them that it’s not worth “wasting” money since they’re likely to see little return compared to resources used for developing support.

Lmao they wont make a kernel level anticheat compatible with Linux. We're talking negotiations, conferences, meetings, overtime underpaid codemonkeys all coming together across the entire staff just to make a (at best) 5% profit from the 5% of Steam users on Linux/Steam Deck. Never going to happen. Rust (game) developers won't even allow Linux users to use Easy Anti Cheat despite it having Linux support. That's just how much game developers AND publishers hate Linux, even though all of their [Activision] dedicated servers (which are in huge data centers) run on Linux. Isn't it insane?

Around 50 GB for Windows and MW2 Beta is 18GB so 68 GB total. The full MW2 game will likely be over 60GB though so better to just get a big SD card now.

Well it’s good that MWII is coming to steam. Give it time, it should run natively on steam deck in future.

Nice, comprehensive video. However, I’m running into issues playing MW2 on my Deck. I have Windows 11 installed on my Sandisk Extreme SD and got MW2 off the Steam Store. Whenever I enter a multiplayer match, the game freezes on the loading screen. This happens with random maps and games. I’ve tried verifying game files from Steam and letting shader optimization do its course. This fixes the problem for 1-2 matches, but then the game starts freezing on the multiplayer map loading screen again. Any idea what could be the problem? It was the same when I had Windows 10 installed.

It's "better" visually, it's functionally more advanced in steamos / deckui. They will probably revamp the ux of it further down the road

My gameplay stuttering.. I got mw2 steam version..it stutters and i get get killed especially when there's lots bots around me shooting at me at once it freezes and next thing im downed???

I have a ROG Ally and the game runs pretty sweet at 120hz and getting 70-80fps...super smooth but have to play at 25W Turbo mode....curious how this looks in person with the Steam maxing out at 15W but the same as Ally's 15W Perormance mode...which still looks good but not as buttery smooth.

Once the game officially releases the steam deck will not be able to run it it will mostly be around 25-30fps this happens a lot with cod games they update their games constantly and don’t optimize it happened with warzone I have a 2070 when it first release I got around 140-155fps compared to now…I get around 55-60fps

How is the battery life when playing this?

Damn. Just ordered my steam deck and I was hoping I could play this game without having to install Windows. If I were to install Windows would I still be able to play all of the games that have been tested by valve to work without issues?

Haven't tried it myself so I don't know for sure btu all logic would say no. SteamOS uses different file manager so Windows will probably not recognise it. I've also seen pen drives needing read methods changing after Linux to Windows file transfer.

have you tried incorporating the gyroscope to try to dial in headshots while playing? is this possible??

Yeah you have to enter the boot menu by holding the volume down button on startup to switch.

I just bought my first steam deck the new OLED one. I am an XBOX Series X person. I love love love COD games. I thought I'd buy this to be able to play when traveling or on the go. I just downloaded purchased Black Ops 2. It is really hard playing on the deck. The controller set up doesn't work all the time. I'll be running and wanting to aim or turn and it won't let me. I am getting smoked and it is very frustrating lol

Get an SD card, have that running windows and the internal ssd runs steamos, best of both worlds. Make sure to get a big SD card preferably 516gb. Games that I like doesnt run on linux but there are other games that run better on linux.

This may be a "Hot Take" but Valve really needs to start paying big devs for either Linux ports of games or for Proton compatibility. Because games like MWII would be such a massive selling point for the Steam Deck.

@@prizmovr8817 Yeah it means that they will have to support Linux as well. Remember, if they accept it and offer support for it, they will also have to fix al of the issues it brings. Like cheating, bugs, glitches, game breaking errors, optimizations and so on. This means they need to either hire more people that will support Linux or do it themselves which will require money. That's why they choose not to support Linux.

It's Activision Blizzard. They make almost 9 BILLION dollars a year. Do you think they give a damn whether or not their games are usable on Linux? I play Overwatch on Linux. Do you think it's supported? No it's not, but it runs better on Linux than on Windows. How crazy is that? Valve can't pay Activision Blizzard enough money for them to give a damn. And Kernel Level anticheat compatibility with Linux goes against the entire Linux userbase and Linux kernel dev's moral compass.

You can have both this way, if you remove the MicroSD card or just change the boot drive it'll go right to SteamOS. The windows installation is entirely on the MicroSD card here.

You need a doc for that. The steam controller is connected from the usb adapter, not Bluetooth.

this only works with the LCD version. i had downloaded windows to my oled and it's pretty much useless since the bluetooth,audio, and WiFi drivers are not currently available since the technology used is different..... Just for yall to know.

I had to do some digging in the menus to find it. If you can't find it there you can also reconfigure individual buttons to operate as controller inputs instead of Keyboard and Mouse.

I cant get the rivatuenr thing to apear in games :(

Yeah that should work just fine. Power down and take it out. Otherwise you can open the boot menu the same way with the power button and volume down button and switch to Steam OS from there.

You can't dual boot on the Steam Deck, it requires a separate SD card, in fact Windows and Linux on a regular PC also don't like sharing 1 drive.

Necro posting but the answer is complicated. Due to the way MW2 handles input methods by segregating players, you may not mix and match MKB and Xinput controls. So if you want the touchpad(s) to be a mouse you will have to assign MK buttons to all other steam deck buttons, which is not horrible but not ideal. You can use the touchpads as analogue sticks in steam input but I don't recommend that...

It's the SD card. Get the absolute fastest card you possibly can to make it usable. OR lookup how to split your NVME SSD into two separate partitions and install Windows on one of them, then it will be lighting fast.

There's a lot of websites that will have good lists. For this I just used my regular 1tb MicroSD I believe it's some sort of SanDisk Extreme. I'm going to get a smaller one probably around a 512gb one and make that my designated Window Boot drive for the Deck going forward.

@@ponyyponyy8005 No, it will just make it a portable version of Windows. If you want to remove Windows and make the drive space for Steam OS again just go back into Steam OS and format the SD Card.

When I launch the game, the same thing happens as on steam os. It just crashes and closes without giving any error message. Any reason why?

I figured it out. I had Windows 10 Pro N installed and it was missing a specific DLL because of that. I had to install the Windows Media feature pack from settings and after that and a restart, it started working.

Would you recommend this after having it for the time you have? Would I be okay with the 64gb version with am sd card or would you recommend the 250gb version? @@meti9230 I think the crouch/Slide B” button is also mapped to the back trigger so I think I adjusted game play for that and moved on with my life lol. I’m mainly a Pc gamer but having this for the games I like to play on the god is amazing or even while in bed/couch. It’s not gonna be the same as your PC but I mean hell for what it can do it’s beautiful! I personally got the lowest version and then got a 1TB card for steam library/streaming and a 512GB card for a windows/MW2 boot

Real tired of gaming companies shitting on Linux. Pretty sure Cheaters will use whatever they want regardless of OS.

I bet valve will find a fix for MW2.

The fix will most likely have to come from Activision as their anti-cheat system doesn't allow for Linux in this game. Getting around an anti-cheat system doesn't seem like the best solution, a fix from the devs would be the best.

A fix from devs that may never happen because of the small majority of linux users then you have to factor in the bugs in richoccet anti-cheat and the board of directors greed to pay back there investors and pocket the rest of the cash, which would have to leave valve to figure out a fix for richoccet anti-cheat to recognize the proton translation layer. But I am optemistic that the devs at activion blizzard would at least try to make it compatible on steam deck because there could be money made on Linux.
