On a similar job we used 3/4 stakes and pre-trimmed flush to the top of all 2x4 frames and covered gaps with overlapping layers of red stucco tape to keep out concrete from falling in the gaps. Finishers sponged off the red tape as they edged and then upon frame removal, we Sawzalled through the nails holding the stakes to the 2x4's and pulled out the between stakes and the pre-oiled 2x4's came out pretty easy. We debated if we were overthinking it but it worked out great and was a easy removal due to an hour of taping the joints.

Thats a good concept but with form oil and screeds, edgers, hand floats and other things hitting the top of the form, tape is not going to hold. I recommend putting a flexible filler in between the forms, like expansion foam, backer rod.

Or just be careful. Did many like these and it's imperative to not throw any concrete in that space. Then the 2x4 comes out with a couple taps.

awesome job yall. a puller tool would work good on removing those stubborn form boards. it could be a piece of all thread with a hook at the end and there could be a frame that sits ontop of the concrete to pull against. and the hook will drop down under the form board and then turn the all thread to pull the form out. could also lay an 8"x8" wood block on the concrete and lay a burkes bar across the block and hook a chain on the end of the bar and the bottom of the chain hooks on the form board and pry that stubber biotch out of there. ive got a spec house build starting soon and these squares would look nice. so glad yall make these videos for us. thanks so much.

You could use 3/4 inch strips of pink or blue insulation foam between the 2 by 4 lumber so no concrete fills the space. Then use a solvent, perhaps gasoline to dissolve the foam and create a space, then remove the form boards.

I am curious because of usual crown/bow type of issues with framing lumber. In your line of work its all about super-level and crisp lines etc. Great work per usual. Always something to learn. Thanks in advance.

Maybe could have screwed a lag bolt and chain to the 2x4 and attach the other end of chain to a jack to pull em up?

With joints that close I would have used 1x4s where to squares meet and 2x4s on the perimeter. Cut wood spacers to put in between the 1x4s to maintain distance. 1x4s are much easier to strip. Once you pull the spacers out they flex away from the concrete

Next time, put your base filler first, level it out, compact it as usual, then when you start forming use 1 piece of 2x4 squeezed in between 2 pieces of high density styrofoam to the thickness needed

I look the looks of loose gravel, but the thing that would drive me nuts with loose gravel borders is the loose gravel. Inevitable that rain, animnals, cars etc will constantly loosen the gravel. Leading to a messy look, or worse a fall hazard from walking on what amounts to rock marbles.
