Modern PC Gaming on a CRT

Ойындар

CRT's are fabulous, mighty creatures that remind us of a simpler time.
But can they offer the modern PC gamer benefits today?
Their fast refresh rates, and instant response times make twitchy FPS titles more enjoyable- and their blacks are to die for.
-- THE FLICKERING, is only generated by my silly camera and in real life, is not present at all.
To test, we are using a Sony Multiscan GDM-500PS Trinitron Monitor and a few of my favourite PC titles such as Chivalry Medieval Warfare, Left 4 Dead 2, Minecraft, GTA V and CS:GO

    If you really want a big, high-refresh CRT, look for the HP p1230. It has pretty much the same guts as the Sony presented above, but it can do much higher resolutions and refresh rates.(h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c00355202) I have one of these beasts and it can do 2048x1536 at 85Hz. Or if you find that resolution is too high, it can do 1600x1200 at 120 Hz! The only downside (not mentioned in the video, BTW) is that it uses about as much power as a gaming PC. And after about an hour of staring into it you'll want to gouge your eyes out. But the insane refresh rate is totally worth it.

    But keep in mind that melee players typically play on consumer TVs that use 480i, not progressive scan like PC monitors use. If Melee players wanted to evolve further they could use component-to-VGA output from a Wii and hook it up to a CRT PC moinitor.

    CRT technology is still superior to LCD and Plasma in a number of ways. The fact it can handle a multitude of resolutions without any form of upscaling needed, the complete lack of input latency and on top of that it has perfect motion resolution. Talk about perfect gaming tech. The drawback is the size, weight, life span and price to manufacture which is why it was ditched for the cheaper LCD tech. Only now since around 2014 companies like Sony are catching up to CRT technology with super low latency panels coupled to BFI strobing technology offering some of the benefits of the mighty CRT.

  • @realgroovy24

    @realgroovy24

    +cloudskipa I agree with everything you said but life span? CRT's I've found have had far better life spans than any flatscreen, the ability to be repaired if a CRT fails is better than any flatscreen I've seen

  • @cloudskipa

    @cloudskipa

    8 жыл бұрын

    Sony Trinitron Well from my own experience I've found CRT to have a poor lifespan overall, there's a lot of things that can degrade due to the magnetism (if you don't have a degause function) so picture quality and geometry also suffers over time. They can also be quite volatile and I've known a few poeple who have had their tube implode and catch fire to the house. I've really only owned mid to higher end LCD and I would say flourescent backlight is on par with a tube for lifespan but LED edge or backlit is far superior.

    sinephase Very true! and still a problem for many non-IPS LCD used today. One of the biggest issues is still backlight bleeding especially from LED edge lit LCD and a certain amount of clouding and imperfect light uniformity is considered "normal" even on high end sets. It's sad what's happened really, first CRT then Plasma.

    Bubu Well the screen bulges out a little so the image looks a bit distorted compared to a flat screen. I also have to admit my eyes hurt after staring at it for a long time, it feels like it flickers light into my eyes. The good thing though is i was able to run my games at 85 hertz instead of 60, which looked kinda smoother but just isnt worth it imo. If hertz and response time is what's important to you then just get a 144 Hz G-Sync monitor.

CRTs are analog and their VGA interface is the highest quality RGB analog video source in existence. We must respect the purity of this old technology and where it has brought us to this day. Right now I'm typing this on a PC with only a 1080P G-Sync display that can't touch the resolution or black-levels of this decades old Sony Trinitron. Sad...

    I have never owned an LCD, I'm still using a 19" CRT and it's great. Just make sure the colors are calibrated and the geometry is all worked out for each resolution. I'll upgrade when I can get reasonable priced ($300) 27-30" 1440p high refresh OLED. 1400x1050@85hz is a good resolution for 19". Sometimes I run 1600x1200@75hz or lower resolutions at 100 or 140hz.

    People think the old farts are just being negative about the technology of today, but CRT's were truely superior, in nearly every way, except how easy it is on the eyes. For office workers, LCD's were a blessing, no more 60hz flicker headaches. Of course, CRT's addressed that issue with a higher refresh rate, and THIS is the exact reasoning behind the refresh rate craze, and why more was always better. Most good CRT's were 85-120hz, since a lot of people had problems with 60hz flicker. Response time on CRT's is decided by the length of the monitor cable, and is basically 0. The colors depend heavily on the monitor, but CRT's have a natural problem with their brightness fading over time. So most CRT's you find today suffer from tube age, and are not very bright, causing dark scenes to be a problem. Dimming brightness is solely an issue with the ceasing of manufacturing of CRT monitors tho, since when they begin dimming, it was normally time to replace them.

  • @xan1242

    @xan1242

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Richard Smith Exactly the issue with mine. I need to amplify the RGB signals one way or another to get a proper gamma (and brightness) off of my LG T710PU. I'm very sad about it and there's unfortunately nothing much I can do about it... Maybe replace the flyback but that wouldn't help against aging of the tube itself, and most of CRT production has ceased around 2011. I know Sony still makes some CRTs, but those are for hospitals and they're more like PVMs rather than computer monitors.

  • @rich1051414

    xan1242 CRTs fade because of the phosphors on the screen burning out. Knowing the reason doesn't really instill much hope in fixing it.

    Richard Smith Yea I know. I'm not sure about oscilloscopes, are they still being made with CRTs as well or are they now made with LCDs? (not counting ones you plug in your computer etc.)

    ***** The issue with phosphers was not an issue in the absorption to emission time, but the decay time of the emission. This could cause ghosting and color bleeding. It was the off time which had a potential for delay, not the on time. I pointed out the cable length was the bottleneck in jest, to point out that response time was not even a consideration. That was meant as a joke. It was a non-issue. The issue comes in due to digital decoding, which although does allow for precise pixel perfect pictures, it introduces inherit latency since those signals must be processed.

The mute button is the most used button on any remote control I use, and that can become tiresome. So I now use a good compressor / limiter to tame the overly aggressive audio on most broadcasts.

    Not really. Under 40 watts for a 17" CRT Sony monitor I have. Under 80 watts for a 30" 16:9 HD CRT Toshiba. Both measured with a kill-a-watt power meter. Your PC likely uses more than both.

    Did I see BNC RGB connectors on the back? I still have my first 17" CRT. ViewSonic with the BNC connectors. Though I never could find a cable for it when I wanted it, I understand it is supposed to make the picture that much better.

    I have an old high-end 17" IDEK Iiyama MF-5317 from 1992 (with max res of 1280x1024 in 1992? :D) and it has BNC RGB connectors and BNC-VGA cable. I haven't tested that monitor so I don't know if it works or not.
