    I’m a scientist and the community is going to love this. As are a lot of others in fields faced with similar issues of getting peripherals and computers of vastly different ages and using different protocols to talk to each-other. For example in my current lab I have a DOS PC that we keep running because of it’s custom hardware and software, which isn’t available for newer platforms; but we also had to get it to work with USB-only keyboard and mice as well as more modern data collection devices that emulate USB keyboards, mice, and game pads. This would have been way easier to implement then getting a USB PCI card to work in DOS without breaking any of the other existing and essential peripherals or software. This is something to add to my list of resources for solving this type of connectivity issue.

    A HUGE Thank You from all of us scientists and engineers to the retro computer community for your contributions to our fields of work ranging from behavioral science to particle physics, even if when you didn't know you were helping. It's not unusual to find decades old computers still in service in research labs and facilities because of the expensive and often custom built hardware they interface with or control. Finding items like compatible monitors, input devices, as well as tools to get these old computers to talk with modern peripherals and networks are a major issues for the field. The more solutions that the retro community to give us to keep these systems operational, from hardware adapters to use modern replacements, to removable media conversion/archiving, to fully functional software emulators; the better we can do in keeping our research and development moving forwards.

    I'm sitting here thinking 'HUH a microcontroller like a pico could probably do the translation, which puts even a zero as massive overkill. Which to me says that pi could PROBABLY be put to use doing other things alongside being an IO translator. Wonder what other retro oriented projects this could serve. Use the Pi as a wifi bridge for networking? Trnaslate modern web into something the target machine can understand? Mail client so the target machine jsut has to talk to the pi and then the pi talks to the actual email service?

  • @kaitlyn__L

    @kaitlyn__L

    2 жыл бұрын

    You’d be surprised how much timing tolerances can eat-up CPU speed. Without latches/bus transceivers, the microcontroller needs to be able to perfectly run in sync with the timing the system expects. And that can be significantly more complex in practice than you’d initially think. Like to emulate a latched input, you can waste hundreds or thousands (or even millions) of clock cycles ensuring the timing will line up, especially if the host system isn’t perfectly predictable.

  • @singletona082

    @singletona082

    @@kaitlyn__L So basically can't expect the pi to do double duty in this thing?

  • @kaitlyn__L

    @kaitlyn__L

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@singletona082 not “can’t”, more “not necessarily”. It depends on how much support hardware exists on those custom boards and how tight the timings are for all the various systems it can be used with. There’s a video called “WiFi Game Boy Cartridge” by “there oughta be” which goes into those challenges, although obviously that’s about the Z80 CPU and a very different system bus, while this is emulating ADB and PS/2. But there is some information there which you can cross-apply. He does actually manage with a microcontroller in that video, but it ends up being much beefier than he’d initially anticipated, and has zero headroom for anything else. So for instance maybe the Pi might be able to do network translation, but not the other items you suggested, or maybe it could indeed do all of it. Rather it’s just not as simple as looking at the RAM and the GHz, because of how sensitive to timing these things can be :)

  • @singletona082

    @singletona082

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@kaitlyn__L I mean even if it can't do more than what it's doing here I'm still on board because that makes getting your feet into retro far simpler. Granted yo ucould argue 'why not just emulate the whole thing if you wanna retro since by the time you do an IDE to CF drive replacement, replace the mouse/keyboard, get an adaptor for a modern monitor and floppy emulation what is even original anymore' And... I get the argument. However giving folk options is always good in my eyes and while having a raspberry pi in an Apple IIGS themed case with an emulator that does the theoretical maximum possible Thing is neat? There is something t obe said for putting the original silicone to work.

  • @kaitlyn__L

    @kaitlyn__L

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@singletona082 oh yeah, 100% agreed. There is an irony to using a system with more power than the host system to just do some translation, but I certainly don’t see it as a contradiction like some people do. And yeah, even if this is all it can do it’s very awesome, and it’d just be even more awesome if it could do some extra stuff on top. Of course bear in mind Bluetooth is already a whole addressable packet stack very much like networking, so adding WiFi could double the workload of the machine. But yeah it really depends on whether the speed of the Pi is necessary for lag-free operation, or whether it’s just an easily available part.

    My initial thought was that this was going to be similar to 8bitdo's Retro Receivers for NES, SNES and Mega Drive but it's clearly much more versatile than that. Really interested in this project now. I'm hoping this can also double as a storage device interface of some kind. Would be nice for stuff like the Amiga or old MacBooks with their weird proprietary ports. Edit; nah, that's clearly out of scope for what this is. The extendability might allow it though.

From what I understand Microsoft changed up stuff with the new controller's bluetooth protocol that caused a lot of headaches for connecting to non devices that aren't supported by Microsoft. I managed to get it working on Linux after a lot of effort and using software created by the community to fix a issue created by Microsoft.

I found a great, early USB joystick called Raider Advanced FX that I'd love to use on Windows 10, but Googling it folks have issues even getting it to work on Windows 7! A big part of the issue is driver signing, so something that can act as an in between and map whatever is sent to XInput or whatever would be a god send.
