Modern Day Root Canals: Saving Teeth Will Save Healthcare | Sonia Chopra, DDS | TEDxFarmingdale

In this groundbreaking talk, endodontist and entrepreneur Dr. Sonia Chopra shows the regenerative power of the human body through storytelling, humor and science on why saving teeth can create a happier, more confident society, simultaneously reducing the global healthcare crisis. Sonia Chopra, DDS, is a board-certified endodontist and owner of Ballantyne Endodontics in Charlotte, North Carolina. Sonia became passionate about endodontics after a dental patient experience, where her pain was misdiagnosed, and the wrong tooth was extracted. It wasn’t until she was referred to a caring, thorough endodontist that she was correctly diagnosed, and a root canal saved her from excruciating pain. Now she’s on a mission to save teeth whenever possible. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. As a general dentist and endodontic provider, I loved your presentation. Early in my career I realized that root canal is a delicate and beautiful procedure that is safe and effective. Thanks for so powerfully sharing your story on the value of teeth. As you have articulated, I too see the immense affect that teeth have upon physical and emotional health and well-being. Teeth are to be saved not removed.

    I had 2 root canals after failed amalgam fillings (48 yrs old), both root canals failed very soon after. Implant in one site, still a hole in the other. Not convinced. The pain of infected teeth is unbearable. I am sorry you went through this as a teenager, heartbreaking.

    Why haven’t you addressed why you got a crack in the tooth in the first place? Preventing the crack is very important! That’s where just doing the root canal is not enough!

  • @JR-st3mp

    @JR-st3mp

    You can’t entirely prevent cracks in teeth Large fillings will all eventually cause teeth to crack. Only way to avoid fillings is to avoid decay. Cracks aren’t the only reason (by far) that teeth become infected. Decay is a bigger cause. Decay is mostly asymptomatic in most people, which is why we need to do so many root canals. So, if you’re dentist says you have a filling to do…..do it! If you get a second opinion about fillings, there is a 99% chance that dentist will tell you you don’t need the work to be done….it’s an ego thing, and a sure fire way to get a new patient in your practice, while making the other guy look aggressive….but it’s the more ‘aggressive’ diagnosis that is almost always more accurate. Undiagnosed decay in America is a far larger problem the. Overdiagnosed decay. Lastly…..don’t do dental tourism. It’s a disaster most of the time, and sometimes life threatening

    ...the inflammation is a sympton of something else out of balance in the body. Mostly connected to our foodpatterns. Sugar for example increases micro inflamations in the body. Holistic dentistry could help prevent a lot of (further) suffering in the mouth and the rest of the body.

  • @2thdoctom

    @2thdoctom

    Жыл бұрын

    The inflammation of the pulp from a cavity or crack in a particular tooth, comes from our immune system responding to microbes in that cavity, of that tooth, not from some other imbalance elsewhere. Sugar by itself doesn’t cause decay in our teeth unless it is metabolized by certain microbes that produce acid to demineralize the tooth structure (just talking about teeth here, not systemic effects). The decay (and microbes causing it) needs to be removed and if the pulp is inflamed beyond its ability to heal, a root canal is needed if the tooth is salvageable or the tooth requires extraction. The inflammation generated there does have an additive effect overall with other inflammation caused by other inflammatory stimuli elsewhere in our body and that is detrimental to our health. That is an important reason why one should address oral health issues that cause inflammation. Holistic dentistry is a mixed bag that has some perspectives I am open minded about, but with regard to endodontic subject matter, has a tendency to ignore current, legitimate, peer reviewed data in favor of antiquated, poorly controlled studies from early last century that would be considered now to be remarkably unsuitable for developing protocols found within a reasonable standard of practice. Sorry to nerd out on you about teeth, but as you may have guessed by my handle its hard not to. Cheers

    She presented herself well. Very articulate and certainly sold her view on root canals. Some mis information about losing a tooth can lead to sleep apnea. Definitely not true. Also she did not mention how to sterilize the millions of dentinal tubules that can harbor bacteria and toxins. Where’s the proof that even modern day endodontic therapy is effective. Do you routinely perform Oral DNA testing to validate these teeth are healthy?? I’m not an advocate of taking teeth out but also I’m concerned about patients systemic health

    Dentistry still is pretty barbaric, although better than it used to be. Like a lot of healthcare the standard of care and business model is to largely fail at prevention then push expensive treatments mostly address symptoms, and much of it is not as science based as we'd all like to believe.

    Prices vary by teeth. The more roots and nerves the more it costs. Still a lot cheaper than extractions with implants. I have gotten two over the years and will be getting a third this time from a endodontist since it is a back molar which regular dentists wont do. Them. I will need deep cleanings after as she says to regenerate the gums to return closer to the tooth.

  • @2thdoctom

    @2thdoctom

    That is incorrect, Pete. There is a ligament the tooth lives in, its called the periodontal ligament. After a root canal is completed, that ligament is still intact and the tooth stays attached to your jawbone. You have pressure sensory perception of that tooth because of that living ligament and even in the case that this endodontist shared, the infected jawbone and ligament regenerated after the root canal eliminated the dead pulp from inside of the tooth. It is a valuable procedure and it takes arduous study and training to do them successfully for people. Endodontists perform root canals with the same type of microscope that ophthalmologists and neurosurgeons use, do you complain about those medical specialists charging a fee when you see them for care?

    I got a root canal at 16, now I’m almost 28 and still have my crown/root canal in good shape. I’m glad I got it done, I still feel pressure when I chew and got braces and even feel mild pain when I get the wire tightened. I’m glad I got a root canal instead of an implant cuz otherwise I wouldn’t be able to get braces, my root canal can still move since there’s bone and ligament. I also got lucky the endodontist that did mine was really good, and that is just pure luck for me.
