Very interesting content yet again. I do however kinda miss the RGB masterclass series, that focussed on getting the best picture out of specific consoles. Those were awesome. Would love to see a video like that again.

I think the problem is that they ran out of consoles people care about, all of which they covered very thoroughly. Most of the advancements in recent years have been in external devices, such as the retrotink 4K, which they cover as they're released. The only other things they could really do would be obscure Japanese consoles from the 80s and 90s (which they don't have AND 99% of western gamers don't care about aside from MAYBE the PC Engine/TG16 and NeoGeo), failed western 90s consoles like the 3DO and Jaguar, and the absolutely ancient stuff from the 70s like the 2600 and Colecovision. I just don't think there's a lot of interest there, and that probably includes Try and Coury. PCE and NG are the only ones I think are really viable if I'm honest. That said, it's could be good to at least have an update/roundup video to go over what's changed over the years for people who want to use those videos as tutorials without having to worry about being out of date or tracking down 15 different videos to get every detail. idk if it's worth the effort of redoing them all again. But maybe!

@@WH250398 I remember thinking the same years ago. Then as I realized all you need is the best cables you can get for each console, and a good upscaler which now the Retrotink is the best. Or go full emulation and/or get a mister fpga. There really isn't a big mystery on the topic anymore. Most old games look like crappy on modern displays compared to how the looked on CRT unless you use emulation to rerender the graphics an add good artificial scanlines. I don't know how good this new Retrotink is, the last one was just inferior to emulation so I sold mine. Your better off with a old CRT or emulation these day in my opinion.

Welcome to the club. Spent the better part of 8 years perfecting my home theater for movies and video games (modern and retro). Playing games on a 145'' projector screen with 13 channel Atmos setup from the PS5 and PC is just a mind-blowing experience and I've never gone back. Cost a few pennies, but very well worth it.

About 10 years or so ago I bought an old Sony CRT projector with native analogue inputs. It was shockingly good for retro games. Fantastic contrast, no motion blur and no need for scalers. You could also run modern stuff up to 1080i with a cheap hdmi to vga adapter. I wish I still had it but unfortunately it was the size and weight of Robocop. Good times.

I love that you guys made a projector vid follow up. Too many gamers sleep on projectors because they aren’t as fast as the fastest TVs but for the price you get a massive screen and a lot of immersion no matter the resolution. Even playing modern games at 1080p can be amazing with how big the experience feels

Welcome to the family Coury ! I've been playing games and watching movies on a home projector since 2009 and never really went back to TVs ever since. Coupled with my 7.1 receiver (all my devices - 13 consoles, PC, VHS, LaserDisc and 4K Bluray players - are plugged to it) and a 3.5-meter-wide picture, it makes for a pretty nice setup and an experience I never get tired of !

I got one of these for my new set up. I had this crazy idea in my head of a setup where I had a drop down projector screen going over my JVC-D series CRT. Suffice to say the set-up is insane, best of both worlds. I never play 240p/480i games on the projector but 720p and up all looks phenomenal on it (the best I've ever seen 360 or PS3 games look). Also of note is that same projector can do an amazing 3D at 1080p, I've started collecting 3D Blu Rays just for it and the visuals are much better than a 3D TV (also 3D gaming on my PC looks amazing as well).

The DCI-P3 mode is a film thing. Doesn't go as bright as Rec.2020 but is more cinema-accurate. For example, the 4K Blu-Ray of Blade Runner uses the full color gamut of the film negative and fills up the HDR color gamut. The movie looks better than it did in theaters in 1982 (especially since it's the Ridley Scott-approved Final Cut). Its sequel, Blade Runner 2049, has a much more subdued DCI-P3 look, due to the cinematographer, Roger Deakins, wanting a cinema-accurate look.

I had a projector setup for many years (also using a BENQ projector no less), and it was great for its positives, but the negatives eventually had me going back to a traditional TV. Pros: enormous screen, about as big as you can make it, with great image quality. Cons: Not great with ambient lighting. A pain to set up if you don't want to interrupt the view walking past it. A little bit of warmup and cooldown time to get it up and running. Very easy to get nauseous for people susceptible to motion-sickness when playing 3D games.

One cool thing is how Virtual Reality headsets have become much higher resolution and slimmer in form factor and will continue to do so. Eventually getting one of those and playing Retro games inside the device on a giant projector size screen in 4K could be the way to go for many that don't have the space, and it will even offer advantages that you can't get on a projector such as OLED black levels. It's a good alternative for those who still want to experience that spectacle. VR gear is not quite on that level in terms of clarity and comfort just yet imo, but i can see it getting there relatively soon.

I almost exclusively play on a projector. Once you have experienced the immersion of 120plus inches of screen in a dedicated room and decent projector, going to a Tv or monitor is a no go. Size creates an intimate immersion, when you actually have to look up to see the sky as if you really where there. 4k gaming benefits greatly from screen real estate.

If it’s anything like mine, projecting at a 45 degree angle is just fine. I recommend using the projector throw distance calculator to see what kind of screen size you are going to get out of its placement within the room. If I had gotten a short throw even with keystone it would have been a ridiculous 240” or something

@@mariokart8054 Hey, can you tell me how Benq low latency projectors handle keystone correction? The projector snobs that review these things never bother to measure lag while using keystone because it is "sub optimal" - even though keystone is there because a lot of people use it! Right now I'm using an Xgimi Horizon, and I love gaming on it, but I can only play slow moving games because of the lag. Gaming mode has 35ms of lag when using keystone. I could get 16ms of lag if I turned off keystone, but that's not possible for me. If I could shave down my lag to something like 25ms by upgrading to Benq then that would likely be a significant upgrade for me - but no one, least of all Benq, is prepared to divulge that information.

Why would you EVER want to use the built in speakers AND external speakers at the same time? All that does is double the front channel sound and likely will never be perfectly in sync with your other speakers.

If it’s analog audio out via the 3.5mm audio out into a soundbar, I’d shouldn’t have any latency. My thought is that the sound bar is for the people in the front of the room, while the built in speakers are for those in the back. Sort of like a zone 2 audio output on an AV Receiver.

I have tried adding a projector to my gaming setup but ultimately not a huge fan. I finally figured out why. Ceiling and walls were white. I also have OLED and in my gameroom I painted the surrounding walls and drop ceiling black and even my oled is much better. Watching your video I still see you have the issue I had. Too much light reflection on your ceiling and walls. Love the video but I know if you can somehow change your tiles black it would help a lot

You did not talk much about the screen. I suspect there is an upgrade path there but I do not know how significant it could be. Want to say I have read that newer screens can benefit projectors with 4k and HDR.

Mario 64 is ot a good showcase for BFI since it only runs at 30fps. What the BFI is doing is essentially emulating CRT-style 60hz flicker so with a 30fps game like Mario 64 you will just get double-image effect just like on a CRT. But at 120hz(8ms persistence) you wont see a noticeable enough difference anyways and I would not recommend BFI for 60hz content on big screen projectors since the flicker will be more noticeable at that size. Try has the LG C1 which does BFI differently via rolling scan and gets 6.2ms persistence at 60hz when set to Motion Pro High which is a bit better. The LG CX did something like 3.3ms at both 60hz and 120hz which was noticeably better but LG has nerfed their BFI since then.

6:50 I've owned DLP and 3LCD projectors and in all honesty I wouldn't recommend either technology. Me and my family are susceptible to the rainbow effect of the color wheel found in DLP's and there isn't anyway of getting around it. Some studies suggest that almost 50% of tested people can see the rainbow effect. 3LCD you don't get the rainbow effect but instead you get a big pixel LCD screen effect if you are close enough to the projection. Also the 3LCD panels in the PRISM block eventually rot and degrade from being slowly cooked by the backlight. In summary don't pay more than $500 for a DLP or 3LCD projector as at this point as they are both dated and flawed technologies. Laser projectors have much more promise and you can get one in the same price range as this BenQ. I know I sound jaded and cynical but I feel like these companies are just flogging old components until they eventually make the switch to laser only.

I've noticed that I only see the rainbow effect when I get really close to the projected image and look for it. At a fair distance away I can't see it at all. But could be one of those things that effects you over time without realizing it.
