Modelling Analysis & Design of PEB Structure: Part 1.1 - Structural components of a PEB

Ғылым және технология

Pre-engineered buildings are the most common type of steel building and widely used for commercial structures like large warehouse, factory shed or office buildings. Due to it's extra advantages and cost effectiveness, PEB structures are now more popular in the construction industry.
In this new series on modelling, analysis and design of PEB structure, I will cover various modelling techniques, using STAAD analytical as well as the physical modeler, discuss how to generate the 3d model correctly and reuse the geometry information to assign specification, property and design parameters. Also I will introduce several custom templates which can help us in modelling.
In this video, I will cover an important topic, what are the different components of a pre-engineered steel building and which structural elements we need to model for analysis and design.

Mr Surajit. Normally we don't add purlins for modeling' but apply loads on purlins and Columns as UDL.

It cannot be considered in staad , even if y€ model , proving that it will be act as torsional restraint for compression flange is impossible to prove in linear static analysis , so there is no use of modeling it

Do you want to model purlin first, then rafter? Well, normally we model the primary members first and then move to the secondary members, but if you want, you can model the purlins first. Only point, you need to maintain proper connectivity between purlin and rafter for load transfer.

Currently, I don't have any plan to start a paid course on any topic, though there are few requests for this. You can send me your requirements via email. I will go through that and let you know if I can manage some time to start a training.

Good topic , but all these workflow system probably most of them are aware . But making a complete model of both lateral load resisting system and main structure is too complex to be completed in staad, honestly staad team needs to upgrade their features for ease modeling , especially dealing with tapered members, modeling the Purlins add difficulty with so many member segments on rafter, which in other softwares like robot sap 2000 is easy to do , one can be faster and productive when compared to staad , india still being old school approach as always are not realizing this fact , nor we individuals as engineers are able to grow

Have you ever used Physical modeler in STAAD or know how this module can solve all these issues ? I think you don't know about this module, try to use the latest features of STAAD. Don't worry, I will cover this module and other advanced modelling techniques in this series (FYI, I have generated all the models used in this video in less than 4 seconds) and then you will realize, how easily we can handle all your problems in STAAD.

@@surojit_ghosh yes I have used , but still its not that user friendly , its ok, the currently popular approach of tapered member optimization is creating segments of 3m and changing its cross-section property ,especially thickness of built up i section . These segments are for rafter segments only , not the segments due to modeling of purlins or roof struts . So in physical modeler also you will have to break members and accordingly profile oprimisation is to be done , if you guys had a feature like in etabs , robot , scia engineer , that would had been of a great use case and much much better userfriendly

Hi Alex, you are correct about optimization. From modelling point of view, I know we can ease the effort with advanced features or custom templates. But right now, there is no default option available to optimize the tapered section in STAAD. Yes, we can use custom templates to select economic section but it is not possible for all the users to generate such custom macros. One thing I can suggest. please put your recommendation in the ideas channel (communities.bentley.com/products/ram-staad/i/). This channel is monitored by the product manager of STAAD and he will respond to you with more clarification.

@@surojit_ghosh thanks surojit I am happy that my feedback is being heard . Let's hope Bentley comes with better solution in future. Ram elements on other hand relatively better for web tapered members compared to staad , however its still not that perfect , but yet better in terms of use case. You should make an video on ram elements for peb structures
