Tip: To do it in less time, model the 1/4th of the shape and use symmetry mod.

The threads have to spiral... They currently do not. I assume you would know that when modeling 'a perfect nut.'

he double clicked to select the bottom of the cylinder. If you click once on a face you select that face, but if there is another face under you need to click again and it will select it. After he selected that bottom of the cylinder he then deleted it so he could weld the vertexes.

Not bad, but after you fixed the top, you could have used the Symmetry modifier and avoid manually doing the other half. (It is not perfect since the grooves are not right but depending on the purpose you could skip all that..)
