Model With Down Syndrome Challenges Beauty Stereotypes

SUBSCRIBE to Barcroft TV: bit.ly/Oc61Hj
THE first model with Down Syndrome to front a beauty campaign is hoping to shake up the industry and prove that “beauty belongs to everybody.” Katie Meade is the first to admit that people with Down Syndrome, as well as other disabilities, are largely absent from the beauty and fashion industries - and she’s determined to change it. The 33-year-old made history last year when she became the first ever model with Down Syndrome to be the face of a beauty brand and her career - both as a model and as an ambassador for people with learning disabilities - continues to grow. Growing up, Katie loved putting on different outfits and playing with lipstick, and had always dreamt of becoming a model but it wasn’t something she believed would ever happen to her. Now that it has, Katie is passionate about encouraging other people - whether they have a disability or not - to consider themselves worthy of a place in the beauty and fashion industry.

the problem with this whole "everyone is beautiful no matter what" movement - is that its still soo shallow. If everyone is beautiful and beauty is on the inside, why the fixation on external appearances?

I totally agree with you, it'd be better to move towards "beauty isn't everything" or "your worth isn't in your appearance" because "everyone is beautiful" is clearly a lie, even if well intentioned.

ohtebowah - There needs to be visibility, first and foremost. Honestly, it's a shallow world out there, and if having an outwardly pretty/beautiful person head a campaign helps people become aware of an issue, that's great. We shouldn't stop there, but there always needs to be a first step.

ohtebowah Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder! Not everyone is gonna think you're beautiful, not everyone is gonna think I'm beautiful, even if someone thought you were nice as all hell, doesn't mean they think you are beautiful! We are ALL beautiful just not to everyone and that's OK ! Beauty is subjective!

She's well spoken. The ability to communicate effectively to others is important and she's lucky that she's able to do so. Some people that have down syndrome struggle to communicate with others. That would be so hard. She gets to do something amazing for people with disabilities....change their perceptions. Good for her!

Corey Obrien 1. If a god existed AND she was good, down syndrome would definitely exist as children with down syndrome are outstandingly endearing. How they are able to manage life is depending on the grade though, and very much on how they are encouraged in their development. But the latter is valid for "normal" kids as well. 2. I don't take such sayings literally, it's just an expression ;)

Isolation party beauty by definition is indeed subjective, whether physically or characteristically. This definitely does not include fertility, and although health can effect someone's beauty, it is still left up to the individual mind to determine whether the affect diminishes beauty. assuming the initial comment was addressing the individuals opinion about this woman's physical appearance and personality, it still applies to her. You implied that this women isn't the picturesque idea of beauty, which is always arguable. Her physical appearance cannot be discredited by a single individual. If I say she is beautiful, you can disagree, however your opinion isn't definitive.

Because we have both battled PTSD, severe depression, anxiety, etc. in the same hospital clinic, I'm fortunate enough to know a woman with Cerebral Palsy. She has a slight tremor in her hands and definitely sounds 'deferent' when she speaks, but she is such a kind lady and there are a few of us who see her as a friend, not 'some weirdo' - simply because at first glance it's easy to tell she's 'different' (she also occasionally has seizures due to her condition and probably more difficult symptoms she has to manage which I don't even notice. C.P. presents different challenges or symptoms to each individual). I remember one day her and her best friend were describing why they didn't like one of the nurses in the clinic we were in. It was because this nurse had (literally) tried to spoon feed this woman her tablets - despite her being quite capable of taking them herself. This woman then went on a rant and made a list of EVERYTHING she can do independently... Many people don't realise the physiological effects of mental illness and just how disabling they can be. Anyway, I guess you could say I'm a pretty good example of someone who's DEFINITELY become severely disabled by mental illnesses over the years 😜 Both myself and this lady live alone when we aren't in hospital. Sometimes we receive some 'community support' - but it isn't much. Anyway, as she was listing off all these things she can and does do for herself, by herself, I silently realised, "holy crap. I'm more disabled than she is right now - she is capable of SO MUCH MORE than I am at this point!" Yet I doubt others would initially presume that, simply because she walks funny, speaks funny and drools a bit. If I think about the last time I got 'dressed up' (for my Grandma's funeral) and got up to read something she had previously requested we read at her funeral ("The Sum of Things"), I would have APPEARED just like the girl I was before mental illness disabled me... intelligent, eloquent, beautiful, talented, creative, kind, etc. etc. (these are all words I've heard from other people when they describe me). I left high school with fantastic marks and dreams of going to university and getting a job in my dream career. These days, I struggle with everything from answering/making phone calls, leaving the house (or hospital), showering, brushing my hair, managing to complete simple tasks (e.g. laundry. Or wrapping up Xmas presents or whatever). I live off packaged food because I have no motivation to cook. I used to be a good singer and played piano, trumpet and even taught myself how to play the Irish tin whistle when I was 11 years old. I was very artistic growing up, was dux of my high school art classes and at one point was 'semi-well enough' to study a bachelor of visual arts at uni part time (where I somehow managed to INCREASE my GPA). These days I struggle to simply colour in. I have no motivation for art or craft projects, yet this woman I've been speaking of managed to make beaded bracelets for all the females in the smoker's courtyard at the clinic. For Christmas, she made FROM SCRATCH a card, matching envelope and matching gift bag with some sweets and chocolate in it for all of us. She said it took FOREVER - but the point is that she did it. She can crochet tiny delicate patterns and I can't even remember how to knit. I know this is a long post but I wanted to show just how WRONG our first impressions of people can be. If you put me next to this woman and looked at us both, I can (sadly) guarantee that the majority would point to me if they were asked, "who seems more capable in life?" Same thing would happen if you watched us sit down and talk for 10 minutes. Yet as I described above in detail, at this point in time, she is SO MUCH MORE CAPABLE OF VARIOUS THINGS IN LIFE OVERALL than I am that it's absolutely indisputable! I'm honoured to have gotten to know this woman. Yet if it wasn't for her (more 'normal' looking) best friend at the clinic who treated her just like everyone else, I probably would have been too prejudiced and judgemental to bother to get to know her... That makes me sad AND somewhat disgusted at myself for being like the majority of society and just automatically assuming that people are somehow 'lesser' than you WITHOUT EVEN GETTING TO KNOW THEM FIRST! I love that this lady with Downs Syndrome was given an opportunity to model. Not only because it brings attention to 'changing the modelling industry', but because in regards to HOW she goes about her modelling - she's really quite good! 👏😍 Thanks for reading all of this if you actually got this far lol... 😳😬

This is true. I don't think that any one should force themselves to think a certain way just because it's what a good person would do. Be honest.

And everyone is beautiful in someone else's eyes...except those who actually want to say unpleasant things about another. Those people can never be beautiful until they take a good look at themselves and decide to grow up..

The message is literally the opposite of what you said. We have to accept that we're all _different,_ and all of us are beautiful. Just because someone is ugly to someone else, doesn't make it a fact that they're ugly. We are beautiful in all types of ways.

  • @CherryStudios2

I think the focus of the matter should be this: physical beauty doesn't determine a person's value. If a girl thinks she's not as pretty as some celebrity she admires, it may not be the answer for her to pretend she sees everyone as exactly the same. The answer is not to pretend, or to be jealous of people who have different things from you. The answer is to embrace what YOU have, to accept yourself and others. We all work with what we are given; nobody has everything and nobody has nothing. Beauty isn't all that matters, intelligence isn't all that matters, wealth isn't all that matters... the list goes on. Be thankful for what you have and don't worry about what you don't. And don't be hard on yourself, either - beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.

I’m happy to see her achieving her dreams. I saw some comments about how she is not suitable being a model, and people who typed those comments probably didn’t realize how hurtful their words could be. I mean, deep down, we are all the same. Everyone can have their goals and everyone has the right to achieve the goals, and I hope people would appreciate the efforts she had made to achieve hers. Her condition is just a condition, it doesn’t define her, she is a beautiful individual.
