Model:Cycles 2 (Reverb & Distortion)

Музыка

In this second video about the Elektron Model:Cycles I take a look at the reverb effect, distortion/overdrive, and "punch" (the M:C effect that is kind of like an accent - but it also distorts). I like ambient music a lot, also lo-fi music, and these effects lean that way. I show (see timeline) how you can use panning to remove the dry signal and isolate some very ambient reverb tails. I also describe how to get some very lo-fi sounds with the distortion/punch (but how these might be difficult to mix with clean sounds without some sort of external processing). The next video is going to be entirely dedicated to the many things you can do with the Model:Cycles delay effect. Thanks a lot for watching!
Channel Update: As mentioned in the Intro, I'm planning on going back to doing serial videos all in a row (in order to finish a series more quickly). I'll continue to upload ambient music videos (Delta Waves) in between each tutorial series.

You are awesome at doing these tutorials - You take your time with an in depth explanation & it is hugely beneficial for a beginner .. my Cycles is on the way & I know I will be again referencing to all of your videos - I look forward to more as you create them. Your time & explanation & knowledge really gives me a confidence that I can use this instrument for my own creativity .. thank you so much !

Great noise trick and the distortion/punch on that chord was great. Kinda like an lfo? The chord machine, and reverb seem ready made for ambient music.

Absolutely! Agreed, parameter-locking is a lot like a special sort of LFO (synced, discrete, and settable values). Totally agree about the chord+reverb. I want to see how other tracks/machines go along with it. Thanks a lot for watching!

My M:C arrived late May and naturally I've learned the basics if not some extra also. KZread suggestioned your tutorials to me the other day and I've really enjoyed these. It seems that there are much more to explore in this little machine. Don't know if you have done the video about the data managent yet, but that's one interesting topic. Thank you very much for this tutorial!

Love your videos, under the microscope analysis, etc. meaningful, Question: Could one use a Model:Cycles and Model:Samples together synced via MIDI and have each device send program changes to each other to switch patterns, hence making a “song mode” for both units? Question: Could one plug both devices into a laptop/computer/DAW/Cubase and have the DAW recognize both devices at the same time plus have either the Model:Cycles or Model:Samples monitor the combined audio of both devices plus the DAW audio? Love your videos UNDULATIONS!

Hello, i have just discovered your channel, such an amazing place! I have one question. I'm about to pull the trigger and buy the model cycles but, the effects can be assign to a step like the machines? Many thanks in advance!

  • @undulations

Hey, thanks very much for the feedback🙏🏼! You can control _how much_ reverb there is for a track on each step (i.e. parameter locking [or live recording] the reverb send amount) but you can't control the global reverb parameters (i.e. size and tone) in that way. Same for delay send amount (yes) vs. delay parameters (time and feedback, no). So, in a nutshell, the global fx settings have to be controlled by hand (or from something like a DAW sending midi CC values to the M:C), but the fx send amounts, turning fx on/off (or in between), can be controlled per track and per step (also by LFO or pad velocity). I hope this helps!

Hey, when it's just hooked to my speakers I use some pretty typical 1/4" mono cables by Planet Waves (I think that's the right brand name...) - but in the video I'm actually using a Y-cable from uGreen. It is two 1/4" mono plugs on one end and a single 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo plug on the other end - this is to get the signal into my Tascam DR-05 field recorder. I've generally been really happy with the uGreen cables that I've bought (another one like this and also a stereo 1/4" to stereo 1/8"). They seem really well made.
