Modal vs Norm Mineralogy, Major vs Trace Elements, & Indices- Igneous Petrology #7 | GEO GIRL

Ғылым және технология

This video covers the difference between modal and normative mineralogy, compatible and incompatible elements, how to use Harker diagrams, the different major element indices and how to use them (for example: the alkali -lime index, the Fe-enrichment index, the Al saturation index, the alkalinity index, and the feldspathoid-silica saturation index), common trace elements in igneous rocks and what they can tell us about the rocks cooling and crystallization history, and finally how to calculate partition coefficients and why they are useful for understanding the resulting rock's composition.

    Excellent video! Do you find that making these videos helps perfect your ability to communicate geological scientific information? It may seem like an obvious question but I'm curious? I did my first poster session the other day. I want to be a geological science teacher/professor one day and would like your advice on how to improve communication skills. I anticipate that it takes practice? Also I appreciate the review on the major element indices. And I LOVE trace elements. I'm going to be interpreting some trace element data soon from ICP-MS and am super excited to finally practice this skill and interpret real data!

  • @GEOGIRL

    @GEOGIRL

    2 жыл бұрын

    YES ABSOLUTELY! Making these lectures has greatly improved my presentation/speaking/communication abilities, that is in part why I make them. Congrats on your first poster presentation btw!! That's so exciting! In terms of advice, I would echo that it is practice practice practice. But I also think if that is the route you are going, you will likely get a lot of practice through being a teaching assistant which is often required of graduate students. So I highly recommend fully embracing your teaching assistantship and really trying to connect with your students, because they are going to give you so much feedback (even if they aren't aware), they give you facial expressions, they give either engagement or lack of engagement, all of which can be helpful for you to improve your teaching style. However, sometimes the lack of engagement is not your fault, they are just a quiet bunch, but most of the time, when I have improved my teaching style, my students become more engaged (they ask/answer questions in class, they discuss problems with each other, etc.). The other thing you can do to improve your general communication skills is to continue to go to conferences and present posters and talks. The more you do the more confident you become and you also get a feel for how people interact with you at each type of presentation and you get practice answering questions you might not have a clear answer to (which is a useful skill haha). Lastly, I LOVE trace elements too!! They give us so much information! And congrats on getting some data soon! I plan to get some data soon too, it is so exciting, isn't it?! :D

    How are you pumping a full lecture every few days? • @GEOGIRL

    @GEOGIRL

    2 жыл бұрын

    Haha, no I am not pumping these out that quickly, it takes me foreverrr to do the research for these videos! I made many of these videos that are just coming out now over the summer actually and am only releasing them now ;) And of course! I can't wait to get to sedimentary topics, I plan to do a whole playlist over sedimentology/stratigraphy and another whole playlist over carbonate petrology! I even hope to eventually do one over structural geology, but that may be a bit further out because it is not a strength of mine lol. I actually only started with the igneous pet playlist because it was the most requested, I would've preferred to start with sedimentary;) but I love it all, so it will all be on my channel eventually :D
