With the help of the CIA, Mobutu makes a military coup and takes power in the former Belgian Congo. He renamed the country "Zaire" and imposed on his people a peace based on fear, violence, repression. I lived in Zaire in 1973. Saw Mobutu live a number of times. Around that time, the people were crazy for him. It was wild. Planes used to fly over Kinshasa and drop out leaflets of propaganda. I also remember seeing the TV news where he appeared in the clouds at the opening of the show.

We need also to see a film that shows what role the French played in post colonial Congo and how they were indirectly involved in the coup that brought Mobutu to power. Patrice Lumumba was murdered by the Western powers and France had a heavy hand it that too. That’s a film we would love to see.

Mobutu's regime was a disaster for the DRC abd the damage it has done lasts until present day. But this regime was created and backed by all of society and the often manichaeistic antagonisms between Mobutu and those who first made a career within his regime like Tshisekedi and the opposed him shows how heavily the old elites and the power structures behind them scrambled to transition to a new system by means of changing their appearances once the dictatorship they had created was worn down. All these structures are still up and running nowadays and I wholeheartedly wish the Congolese that they will be able to transition to a real, pluralistic liberal democracy!

Quite a few fellow Kenyans here. This is a painful watch that must be made mandatory viewing. We must never forget. When history is rewritten, truth is the first casualty, replaced by ignorance. This is how you disconnect people from where they came from. You cannot get more lost than that. In the words of Mexican poet Carlos Santayana, those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. That said, the music featured here is wonderful. Viva rumba, viva Africa!

I don't think so. Lumumba was a "liberal", and blocked the sovjet-programm with Olenga and their Burundese Tutsi-soldiers . It is almost certain that the KGB did infiltrate completely the networks of nouvelle-droite-fascist André Moyen, in the belgian military secret services SDRA B2, as Philby did controll and finance those networks... I think the sovjets provoked those racist idiots , making they killed Lumumba, having the name of the crime...in the hope that Olenga and his allies take over the cobalt-mines .....I can be wrong, but the evolution of main-agents of André Moyen makes I do believe Sovjets did infiltrate ( Jeune Europe, Thiriart...... ) André Moyen 's networks and the belgian stay-behind as well as theirs "african" part - crocodile -... just as they did succeed in infiltrating completely the german stay-behind ...

This video documentary is a painful reminder of the cruel reality of Cold War politics. The United States, Belgium, and France that destroyed the D.R. Congo must be held accountable for crimes against humanity no matter how long it takes. Unfortunately, their puppets, Mobutu, Kasavubu and others were allowed to die with some dignity. Nonetheless, I think the roles of all the destructive players should be litigated. Germany paid reparations to the Jews. Leopold II murdered about 10 million Congolese. Why shouldn’t Belgium pay for their crimes as well?

@@elemations6292 I've been there. And I have been living also in RCA. The Yakoma said he was not the boy of Ngbemani..., Mama Yemo was pregnant when she became his wife. They did accept Mobutu as one of theirs, but in a kind of adoption, and normaly he should be burried where he is born. That is Lisala. He could be very brutal also against Ngbandi if not of his clan, and i think that has to be why Gbiatibua - his first woman- was burried in Gbadolite. Normally she would have to be burried in the village where she was born. However, people move now far away, and customs change , so I don't know how now they do... Also, since centuries, if someone dies far from home, you would cut some hair and nails, and go to burry that "home". So I can't know for sure how things would happen now, but 40 years ago , already a lot of Ngbandi ( the Yakoma are Ngbandi living on the Ubanghui-river ) said that if he would die, he couldn't be burried in Gbadolite, but had to be burried in Lisala.

He died a slow painful death, his twin wives had already left him to suffer alone in exile and took over all his money and houses in Belgium , , Belgium and USA didnt want him, he died in Morroco . He will be remembered for making another country twice richer than his own , the congo guerillas are sitting in US zoos, Mobutu had the chance to transform the nation but he chose to listen to the whites and focus on money , now the country is in poverty , a lot of parts dont have elecrticity the roads are so terrible . DrC had the ability to be twice better than South Africa since it has so many natural resources, wildlife and hardworking citizens.

Free market economic policies became Mobutu's crucial weapon to convince the whole nation that Zaire was a better place with him. His proxy millionaires took up licences to manufacture and sell many Western brand products from soft drinks, beer, personal care products to food items. Also, Zaire's TV broadcast was quickly utilized for the use of airing eye-catching advertising and lots of Zairean music shows. For many Zairean and DRC citizens who love watching TV at that time, they saw these old memories of TV broadcasts from the Mobutu era as "happy and peaceful times".

Despite mobutu's flaws, and he had many, you have to remember this was the 60s, it was the cold war. Many youths today don't understand the evil that was communism and the right to spread it into the third world. Zaire is the 2nd (at that time, third ) largest African nation. Their neighbors to the west, Congo-Brazzaville adopted a Marxist government and it didn't work out to well for them. Forget the congos, communism never worked out well for anyone, at least not the Soviet style. Mobutu brought ruin to Zaire, but the outcome I think was better that mobutu overthrew lumumba and the communist sympathizers

wildazcat25 How is it better? The country is still in deep shit, rampant poverty and civil war. Companies exploit the country and the vast majority are poor. Is that not evil? Is greed not evil? Even if the country wanted to choose communism that was not for the West to decide. The current system is evil as well. Have you been to rural Congo? Have you seen the children mining hard labour and sometimes dying because the mines collapse on them. Are you saying that is better? What about the thousands Mobutu killed with violence or indirectly when he stole the wealth leaving the people with hunger? Funny you mention Brazzaville, with all the mess it has it is/was better than Zaire and current Democratic Republic of Congo. Zairians used to flee and go to Brazzaville but according to you communism is the worst thing in the world. I don’t support the ideology but to say Zaire/DRC is a better outcome is delusional. Also, Lumumba was not a communist sympathiser. His first port of call was the US when the Katanga issue happened. He even went to Washington to meet the president. They left him waiting and he overheard the US president calling him ‘jungle president’, he then went to the ‘neutral’ UN and they did not help either. The Soviets offered to help him with the conflict in the east succession (that the Belgians were behind). So he took their help at a time when the conflict was intense, what did you want him to do. The West shunned him and wanted to back Belgium. He should sit back and do nothing because communism is the great evil. He made a logistic decision that doesn’t make him a communist but the US spun it that way to justify killing him and his two right hand men. Because he wanted the Congolese to benefit from the resources first, not foreign companies. So they had to go and find a reason that gullible people would fall for. All so they could get their companies an opportunity to steal Congo’s wealth with Mobutu’s help.

The Belgiums are only greedy for the gold they still take it till date and will always take it it was adeal signed and it will never be erased . If congo was able to make Belgium twice richer after the world war then it can make itself even more richer. Sadly unless Belgium is wiped out Congo will never rise from its ashes they will need a miracle to rise up again.

Very plausible work done. This documentary is such an eye opener as much as a learning tool for all Afrikans. Sad how Mobutu betrayed Lumumba for power, but I see how indoctrinated he was from his earlier days as a journalist to side with the foreign powers. a very sad story of the mighty Congo and how external powers have played a significant role to keep Congo in civil war years later.

Prior to Mobutu's leadership, the Congo was marred by chaos, with widespread violence and loss of life at the hands of uncontrolled military units and militias. Innocent civilians bore the brunt of the conflict, facing the tragic consequences of a power vacuum that led to brutality and lawlessness. While Mobutu's methods were often criticized, many saw him as a necessary evil during that challenging time. He employed authoritarian measures to quell the chaos, disbanding undisciplined military factions and crushing militias that terrorized the population. Mobutu's firm grip on power brought a semblance of order and security to the Congo, allowing for a period of relative calm after the storm of violence.

But these leaders of our time don't learn from our history. Once they gain power, they are at a free mode to the same examples of dictatorship and dictators they preach when seeking for leadership. They have not seized from dictatorship but slightly metamorphosised since the world is civilised today. Those who we think are clean from the holy campaigns they preach to us later join the roots of dictation but in a slightly wise way.

This documentary is very well done. Interviews with primary people, and film shot on site and contemporaneously. Minimal narrative commentary. You can watch and listen and make up your own mind about what you are seeing. Second, for the comments section: When will be the end of people blaming the problems in the Congo on history and Western governments? Mbutu had money, power, and resources. He was the one oppressing you for 30 years. He is the one who left you in poverty. The story doesn't begin and end with him, but he is the primary figure of your misery. People who blame their problems on other people, usually expect other people to solve their problems, too. Ain't happening. Not in my life, and not in yours.

Mobutu is similar to Nigeria's Buhari. Initially hailed as a savior of the country, however through systematic corruption, nepotism and gross incompetence he destroys the country and leave HUGE Foreign Debts! Eventually people that hitherto were too afraid to fight this half-god - half-man finally summon the courage to fight. The twist in Nigeria's case is that the behemoth country will not survive as one entity when the seeds of nepotism sowed by Buhari eventually plays out. In Africa, history repeats itself from country to country. Yet nobody learns from it.

I wonder how long Pierre Janssen was married to Yakpwa Mobutu. Wild guess...until the money ran out. He wrote a book on Mobutu so I guess the gravy train continues. Africa can't catch a break from exploitation, but these plunderers would have no standing were it no for corrupt leaders. How in the world does the US or any country outside the continent plan the removal of a country's leader? The more I learn about the US, the more I'm annoyed that we're so uninformed about what our government is doing in our name.
