MMDA Water Hyacinth Removal

Ойын-сауық

Watch how the MMDA are removing water hyacinths from the Pasig River to ensure the Ferry Service can operate without disruption.
Aside from using cranes and backhoes to remove the water lilies, they have two new skimmer boats.
The two new boats were custom made to the specifications of 'Save the Sea Inc', as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts.
The boats were made in China, dismantled, shipped to the Philippines and then reassembled and loaned to the DENR. The DENR then passed them onto the MMDA, to enhance their existing water-hyacinth operations.
The MMDA operate a similar boat from another manufacturer, but it's in the Malacanang area. For security reasons, It's prohibited to take photos or videos in that area - strictly enforced by the Philippine Coast Guard

Water hyacinths provide food and filtration and also provides nutrients to soil etc. But in large quantities it can hinder transportation and water flow. Since there's abundance, we can actually have a processing plant to create biodegradable paper based materials using the said plant, convert to fertilizer and food for agricultural, horticultural and industrial animal farming processes. Sana matugunan sa ganung paraan.

Water Hyacinth was cultivated in the Pasig River as a form of natural water filter to clean up the toxins dumped into the river from manufacturing plants located next to the river. The problem is that the plants are invasive. The plants grow and multiply at a fast rate. Imagine using those truckloads of water lilies, not just for livelihoods projects but as a renewable resource for a biogas power plant. Now that's an idea.

One thing worth mentioning is that the water lillies are doing some good too. They're grabbing onto phosphate and nitrate pollution and stopping it going out to sea, so the lillies can be used as compost fertiliser to recycle those essential nutrients (especially the phosphates, which are in short supply).

I live in the barangay where that floodway is situated. The water hyacinths/lillies are a seasonal thing, but when it is in season the entire river literally looks like a field. This is cool to see.

Very nice equipment. One improvement could be to have a shredder before it goes into the collection hopper. Or have a tug that can take them to the dumping station so that it doesn't waste time running out to the dumping station itself. I would encourage the universities to assign their students to come up with uses for the water lillies.

I hope that machine were huge as big as ship so they could get a vast of waterlilies. But so far your doing great job on maintaining the river neat at les garbage. Implement rules for dumping garbage and litter directly in the river, removed all informal settlers to all walks of metro manila particularly to those nearby the river.
