MMA vs. Kung Fu Fighter Sparring

While in Taiwan, I dropped by a gym called AZ Fight Club and got to meet and spar a former ONE Championship Welterweight and some of his students. But as you'll see, it was also my FIRST time sparring a Kung Fu fighter, who also has a background in MMA and Muay Thai. Let me know what you thought of our round below!

you are one of few who understand the rule of thumb, hit as hard as you get hit. A lot of viewers give me shit for it and say I wouldn't go hard against bigger/tougher guys, but I just hit back hard when I get hit hard and I have plenty of sparring vlogs of me getting my ass kicked hard by bigger/better guys to show it. Thanks for your comment! 🙏

@@MMAShredded hey jeff, first of all, I do agree with you one that rule. But I think some people go harder and you then go harder and its an endless cycle. I think you should communicate with what you want. IMO that rule applies when you are sparring someone you know well. and great video btw!

@@MMAShredded I think that you can match strength for sure, but when it's someone who's clearly less skilled than you, you can still outclass them but I don't think you need to go quite as hard. I've seen a lot of injuries to both fighters from this style of sparring and people get hot-headed quickly and have personally experienced times when I'm going soft but my opponent gets hits clean despite me pulling the shot and then they get that "I'm gonna punish you" mentality, and it's not good for anyone. I'm not saying that you shouldn't match intensity, but for you as the more skilled fighter, maybe be the one to cool the tension and only match force (because here you exceeded force, not matched) instead of being the one who ups the "I'm gonna punish you" mentality because it's obvious you have the skill to do that. Maybe try to save the punishment mentality for the ring where you get payed and it doesn't shorten your or the other fighters career by getting a lot of injuries while sparring.

@@datguypotato783 I can understand and agree somewhat to your perspective, but im not gonna lie, a bit of my ego stops me from telling my partner to go lighter on me.. especially when I feel he is less experienced than me. On the other hand, I am also usually very okay with doing a bit of hard sparring even if i get beat up 😂

This was amazing to watch. Firstly I want to give full props to Huang by setting a good example for his students by sparring in full safety equipment -- pads, helmets, shin guards and rash guard -- even though it's obviously a light sparring session. He's a former professional champ, he could certainly take a hard shot or 12 yet he stil prioritizes safety above all else. Respect for that. Secondly, it was amazing to watch you and Victor spar. What an intriguing and unusual martial arts path to go from MMA to Muay Thai to Kung Fu which just happens to be the exact reverse path I myself took (with boxing thrown in there before doing Muay Thai). Very impressive how he managed to use a lot of the vertical striking, feints, passes and traps seen in Wing Chun and JKD and mae them work so effectively and at one point he even had you doing a straight vertical punch there, Jeff! :) I would like to point out that the straightforward footwork he likely got from Muay Thai and Wing Chun, however, made him very vulnerable to your more agile form of fighting. I'd love to see him combine his striking style with your footwork style and I'm definitely inspired to experiment more with my old Kung Fu as I usually only do its very simple hand trapping when I spar and nothing else.

Good stuff as always! Seeing the kung-fu fighter is a cool trip. It makes me wonder about martial arts as a back and forth, where the same principles can be refined across multiple martial arts, but only if you've got the fundamentals down that intersect styles (jabs, body fluidity for combinations). We don't see martial arts "purists" at the high level in the UFC anymore, but we do see a nifty resurgence of "traditional" martial arts. Also, Dragon Ball music during sparring is a power play. 🔥

you can pivot into it, but I like to step into the pivoted position with my heel already pointing at my target. I LEAP into it. I use different kinds of low kicks for different situations. For example, I will chop down, double step and NOT pivot if im closing the distance. I will pivot and whip my kick if I want to throw my kick OFF RHYTHM. If you are interested in learning more, I have a full chapter that is all about low kicks in my MMA curriculum (19 chapters of techniques/strategies): www.mmashredded.com/themmastriker

You should do some of the "flow" drills as often as you can. That's the style where you see them throwing the techniques and sparring really slowly, just lightly touching with the strikes, putting no power into it. Hard sparring though where you're actually hitting with intent to solidly connect, maybe only once a week or once every two weeks.

And what you think about advantages and disatvantages of their sparring. (for example: at 3:38 the other guy brings up a knee and kind of stops. Do you have any thoughts on how this "would have gone" in a real fight and or how you would train such things safely?)

I just want to double down, because in this newest video, it's two MMA-trained fighters while in this, we can actually see very different kinds of sparring. And I know that there are different sparring-types even just in MMA, but that's even more reason to think about good ways of sparring (and other training). I have a lot of respect for Jeff. A lot of people watching don't understand the unspoken rule of hitting back as hard/soft as you get hit. Sparring intensity is a lot of the times based on how hard the other hits, and that sets the bar for hitting intensity. I didn't see Jeff start hitting these guys harder than called for once without getting hit hard first. Jeff's a good sparring partner Love the videos. I learn a lot of combinations and take downs from here and bring them to my gym for practice. Keep being awesome!

Great footage and it's so interesting to see some of the creativity in Kung Fu though they mostly used Thai, I liked your intelligent movement Jeff you were able to dodge a return counter rear hand that would have hit a lot of people and still land your low kick ... And you caught him with nother low kick by repeating messing up his timing. I get excited seeing how intelligent your kickboxing is. I also absolutely love Kung Fu with it's gate blocks contact and different kinds of lines. You were really tough as a fighter so that's great. Yeah they had a size advantage so they softened up on the high kicks and you all went soft on each other and harder. I'm only 3 minutes in and I just wanted to stop and say thanks for the extremely interesting generous footage you are a very good athlete to watch. I see where there was some trapping. That's another thing most people respond to trapping by just increasing range because it's hard to deal with up close and it still loses though it forces people out. I have ten minutes left to see but you were able to level change and use counter aggression, which is as respectable as it gets for a sport. Good job. So many skills from all of you, and you are very intelligent in everything you do ... Thank you for this!

Your footwork was really good in the second match I loved your half beat timing and lead lunge early in that reminds me of Bruce Lees fencing footwork to a dart out off line strike ... Which you are so good at its great to see. It looks like their lead guy did catch you with a trap one time previously. It's just exciting to see your skill and it's generous and classy to offer it to us for free. Thanks. (Also what I personally appreciate about trapping is the covering aspect ... Sometimes I need to pin an arm in one side so I can safely be in that range and just have one more arm to counter and that creates a frustrating close range opening that messes with the opponent. I learned Wing Chun last, I started in Shaolin and BJJ ... When I learned wing Chun it was to improve the Shaolin I learned it's similar and does things in a different intelligent way ... But I wasn't one of the guys that use it by itself, Shaolin is improved by Wing Chun an Wing Chun is rounded out by Shaolin and kick boxing ... At least in my life.) (I also round out BJJ with standing aikijiujitsu- I like to round out my martial arts I really have love for Kung Fu and it shows love to give it some attention.)
