MLP Animation Analysis: Painting Zip Lines
Фильм және анимация
Break out the art supplies! We'll be using paint and paper to recreate one of FiM's most common effects.
UPDATE: Not much for arts and crafts? Here's a proper set of vector zip lines built in Adobe Illustrator (Flash 8 Compatible)

perfect video ending
Thank you! I was just about to draw a scene where I need to use the zip lines. Rather than actually paint it, I'm thinking I'll just try to use my pen tablet and avoid the Photoshop steps. I don' t know exactly how you got the files to import clean, but I find when I make things in Photoshop and bring them in to Flash, they have problems zooming in/out without looking edgy.
for the paint texture the team of animators probably used adobe illustrator because there is a texture you can give your lines which looks very painty which you can actually manipulate how grainy and how big the texture appears. otherwise this is very useful, thank you!
When I saw the title of this video I actually thought that you are going to do ziplines
"...to stock an illegal daycare." Hahahahaha, oh my god, I love when jokes like that are done nonchalantly in passing.
WOw, this little series of analysis's actually help with basic animation in general... I am impressed with how you break these down as well.
I am so glad I subbed this. Very few KZreadrs place this much quality into a video. MLP, animators, and just clever people all around can enjoy this.
"Now, if only I had a way to end this video." *zip line* Me: Perfect!
I've just watched through four of these animation analysis videos, I'm a scientist through-and-through and have never had an interest in art, film or animation; but I find these videos fascinating. You do a great job explaining it, and you make the videos entertaining. Great job, man. Subscribing!
Detailed, informative, precise, and to the point. Like every else is saying: never stop making these videos
I'm astounded at how much effort it takes to make something that seems so simple. All the more reason to respect Studio B and the team behind MLP FIM. As for you, gbeaudette, keep cranking out these amazing videos. Love em!
I like to animate as a hobby and this was really helpful! I never understood how the zips were made until I watched this video! Great job!
These are so great, not only really informative, but also lots of fun to watch!
It's people like you that are helping me understand animation better
Wow, that was really fascinating! I'm going to start studying animation in college next year, and your breakdown videos really help to keep me motivated!
I dont even have any animation software and I love watching you do these videos.
I really like the grittier look, it gives it a very vintage animation look.
I love these videos! The animation on this show is fantastic and it's nice to see people appreciating the work that went into it and sharing techniques with those interested in duplicating it. BRAVO TO YOU, SIR!
I just realized how much I could learn from you about the art of flash animation. Subscribed.
MY MIND CAN NOT CONTAIN THE LEVELS OF AMAZINGNESS YOU ARE OPENING MY MIND TO!
Thank you for your hard work and dedication to these elemental animation breakdowns. Keep up the good work.
Your videos are some of the most entertaining and interesting videos on animation I've seen. Please don't stop making these! I would honestly buy a DVD of your work if you were ever to make such a thing.
Nice, I've always liked those "zip" lines in cartoons, (especially the ones shaped like the number 3 kinda.) I never even knew they were called "zip lines," or had a term for them. I always thought I was the only one whom ever took notice of those in cartoons, and found them amusing.
Wow, this never even passed my mind while watching the show. Thanks for the break down, love your videos!
I'm so glad I subscribed to this channel. Praise flash for awesome faces and BG ponies indeed! they're two of the best parts of the show.
I always felt "zip lines" were a very underappreciated visual gag in cartoons. (Even though, they're quite common in American animation.) I always liked seeing those as characters zoom off, with a cartoony sound effect. It's nice to see some analyasis on them, and how to make them. Very good video. Hopefully more fan animators will use them now.
I love these videos. I am not an animator, aspiring or otherwise, but I like seeing how the sausages are made. I imagine these must be very useful to people actually learning animation.
Wow, the zip lines he made at the end are really, really good. Maybe it's just because it is over so fast, but.....they're really good! Not that I expected any less...
This are getting better and better!
These animations are beyond me, but I can't help to get exited over you explaining them. You're doing such a great job. Keep it up! /Subscribed
now i'm not really into animating myself - I've never done an animation in my life - but I really enjoy your videos! I like mlp and avatar (both of which you have videos analysing) though which might explain some of the appeal, but I think the fact that I like these vids enough to subscribe goes to show how well you are doing them! Keep up the good work, brohoof!
Even though I'm only doing still pics, your vids are quite helpful. They also make my future plans for short animated clippits less daunting also!
This is very interesting and makes me see any animation with different understanding
These are absolutely incredible. I think I'm starting to be inspired to try out flash myself...
The "Export Movie" option works well, especially if you have everything in graphic symbols. I usually export things as an image sequence and output it to a movie file outside F.ash
Thank you SO much for these tutorials. They've been a major inspiration!
I've learned more from these videos than I have in the 3 years I've been learning flash in school. You Freaking Rock!
Wow, you have a discerning eye. I knew they were in the show, but I had no idea they were used that much. Nice break down.
Another great analysis as always! Can't wait for the next one.
Good ending but you should've did the roadrunner sound
These are brilliant. So glad I found this channel.
I never thought I'd actually say this about any of these videos but the best part was the end
That is brilliant! If I ever going to do animation I will have a good start point because of your lessons!
you have no idea how much are you helping me
Really loving these videos. Keep up the good work!
NEVER STOP MAKING THESE VIDEOS
I am as far as one can be from animation, but I absolutely love your videos. Thanks for them.
I find these videos to be more informative then most of my college motion graphics classes
Your so good with flash animation that im suprised you haven't made a complete mlp video like the ones Nomorethan9 makes.
I have the original zip line asset and can tell they most likely did zip lines using very strong scratching on formless spot probably been drawing in Photoshop and then vectorized. Also every zip line contains some copies of few same symbols scratched and mirrored. Drawing and scanning is very creative approach, but probably not rational : ) I hope you understand my weak english, hi from Siberia, we love ponies too!
Now if only you had a way to end this video... Totally did not see that coming ;P
I was just thinking about these lines, and suddenly there is the explanation, nice! :D.
You, sir, have just earned a sub. Great job!
@gbeaudette What you are doing is AWESOME! I have learned quite a lot just by watching your videos. Things that I never would have been able to appreciate before! Like these boss zip lines.
The good thing about this is that when the show become more popular there will be more and more stuff in the library they can re use so it will be easier and faster to create new episodes. Right?
These are so awesome :D love watching them!
If you have them on the stage you can select each of them and convert them to symbols.
Awesome! I love to see how animations are made :D Want to learn more!
This is like... a childhood wonder finally explained.
I love your videos so much. :) Nice ending on this one, LOL. I love that you can talk so fast but your voice is pleasant and you enunciate so well.
"So with some cheap paint, brushes, and enough construction paper to stock an illegal daycare..." I had stop the video for a minute, I was laughing too hard.
You're my favorite person on the interwebs.
TOTALLY fantastic dude, thank you so much! Always sorta wondered about these but never really though to look up how they're done. I've always been more into doing non-animated art, but videos are getting me interested in learning animation again. :D Also, perfect ending. That is all.
Guys, I've been looking in the comments for someone to say what the music in the intro is but I finally found it, its by infinitydash (obviously) and is called "The Cutie Mark Crusaders Go Crusading". Hope that helps :)
Dude, you should make a quick 5 minute video of MLP with your story and animated by you! You are that good!
Flash 8 was Macromedia's last version before getting bought by Adobe. It's the version before CS3.
You can "borrow" flash off the interwebs, google it and tell noone you saw me! *fades into the shadows*
@PerryPineapple Same here :D though I'm also taking a short web page production class and we've worked a little with flash so it's awesome to see the tools work for something like this. I almost want to ask my teacher to show these!
You, sir, are a great inspiration to me, and I can imagine to many other animators. I really appreciate the effort you put into these video, and I hope you continue to do so forever. Thanks again A fellow animation enthusiast
These videos are AMAZING!
I've always wondered about zip lines! Thanks you for this!
I really really love these videos, please do more!
I have Flash 8, can I use Pony models? And where can I get them?
I don't usually leave stuff in SWF format, but rather render it all out so I can tweak things in other programs like Premiere and After Effects and output everything as a video.
And to add on you did something really cool with my vector. xD I give you props.
Now THAT is pretty cool! I'm storing this in my likes for future reference.
Hasbro: "He knows hour secrets... We must either employ or 'get rid of' him!"
Really interesting! I'll probably never do stuff like that, but it's nice to know these details! :) Aaand best ending :D
Your animating.. It's.. It's Inhuman! Great job as usual!
NICE keep doing these, I enjoy them.
I've done art and comics, but never animation. I have Richard Williams' "The Animator's Survival Kit" but barely read a few chapters. Your videos make animation study really approachable and insightful. If I ever dabble in Flash, I think I'll come to your videos first.
You are so good at this...and I mean you are not just "good", you are fucking amazing at what you do. You deserve a damn medal for your intellect with all this. I can only hope to be as good as you one day :D Thanks to you and your videos, I have that motivation. Keep up the good work :D
Its awesome when someone teach you something with an awesome example that you wanna do on ur own =D
They used this in most Studio B shows and Inanimate Insanity II
I love learning about animation!
I may be a computer science major but I know ONE DAY these videos will come in handy.
Thanks gbeuadette, now ill never unseen those effects.
I love you. I only have a basic understanding of corel draw and photoshop; but I love these videos nonetheless.
@StarlightFestival123 He is using Macromedia Flash, and if you want it you can expect to pay upwards of 600$ unless the price has changed since I got my copy.
im not even interested in animation, but i enjoy watching these
you should teach animation, i am not joking you are better then any teacher i know off
The last 2 seconds made my day X'DDD
Electrical engineering? That's smart. Theory of relativity? Pretty dang smart. This series? BUCKING GENIUS!
I'm talking about demand for new seasons. They will have enough symbols on their library so it will cut the time and of course cost of production.
@gbeaudette i'd love if you could look into more animated fight scenes, maybe in animes or something. I really would like to see how do the effect of an epic, powerful punch. (how the the animation potrays momentum and builds anxiety for the hit, how the character getting punched reacts, and other things like that)
As a programmer, I can see a way to make your life even easier with the dust effects, especially in flash. ;)
You can now get an animation program from Adobe that supercedes Flash now. Oh and has anyone tried Toon Boom Harmony?
I dont even do animation and these are very interesting its cool to see how it all comes to gether :D
Hehehe, 'Rainbow Dash Compatible" is my new favorite phrase. I imagine a big RDC logo looming, not unlike THX.
HOLY SHIT 0:16 You collected 16x16 = 256 screenshots with zip lines just for that?! (At least i didn't find any exact duplicates, 9/5 and 6/11 for example are slightly different.) Now that's some dedication! Even the show's animators themselves tend to copy the background ponies in a very large crowd (e.g. during the Becoming Popular song when they talk about Rarity and it zooms out to a 'more detailed mosaic' in a similar manner.)
