The Mets broadcast crew once criticized their own pitcher for hitting a guy

True that. I don't know why announcers make a big deal about a warning. An ump can throw out a guy if it's a pitch that could injure without warning at any time. I know that teams feel like if a starter is thrown out it's a disadvantage, but with the universal DH and pitch counts, it really doesn't matter as much anyway unless it's an ace.

M G McCutchen is one tough customer.
A little backstory on some of these ejections might explain things. There was some commentary about prior warnings or incidents in earlier games, so it is possible the ump was being preemptive with the early hooks as a way of saying this isn't happening on my watch.
@eauhomme

The Lackey one was entirely appropriate in my opinion - first pitch was wild and behind the batter, second pitch hits him. Umpire wasn't giving him a third chance. At some point player safety has to come into it. If you can't hit the zone as a pitcher, you shouldn't be playing
Lets see an announcer take a 90 mph fast to the body a see if they still think its ok to throw at someone.

The comments here, and from the commentators always surprise me. These are PROFESSIONAL pitchers. If you miss the plate by a foot, and that is what we are talking about here, your control is not up to scratch and you SHOULD be ejected.
The John Lackey ejection is a record to beat. Two pitches in the first inning, adios.
From a spectator’s point, it could look less than expected. However, the umpires may have some expectations of what had just happened. ( A few umps are in outer space of course ). Usually they have some inside knowledge of what may have just happened. ??

(3:55) Orioles' pitcher gets ejected and even the Red Sox broadcasters are arguing it.
If a pitcher throws a ball and it hits the batter, it should be an automatic ejection!
The announcers always make me laugh. You can easily tell which side they are on.
Warning shots that are close inside, fine. You want to warn the batter to not do something. Intentionally hitting him and getting tossed out is a perfect response. Should get suspensions to it.
1:02 has ejection without HBP. If that wasn't ball 4, we have new pitcher arriving during plate appearance.
I love the announcer (some of them ex ball players) think you have to have a warning first.
When a pitcher goes high it’s pretty much saying he wants to end your career or worse.
Now that is what i call getting thrown out at home for sure
Professional pitcher...if you are supposed to be that good than the expectation is you can pitch without hitting a batter. Pretty easy stuff to understand.
