I think pretty much everybody in the clip at 2:12 was in high IQ mode. First baseman quickly abandoned the play at first and threw it home. Pitcher hit the deck immediately. Runner did those acrobatics to get to the play. Catcher didn't waste any time arguing the call and immediately threw to second to keep the play alive.

Too many plays are just great athletic, not high IQ. Some are just low IQ too. Firstbase coach needs to watch the throw back to the pitcher, and tell the runner to stay on the base.

At any level I'm always impressed by the ability of ball players to think so quickly

In baseball, when you are on defense, every player must think to himself before the play even starts "If the ball comes to me, what am I going to do with it?"

@@esta7763And on the flip side of that, the batter has to be thinking to himself “what pitch is coming, where is it gonna be, and what should I do with it?” Baseball is a thinking man’s game.

I just watched Baez get kicked out by AJ Hinch for pimping an off the wall double and forgetting there was only one out in the inning… seeing the decline is sad…

For some wondering on Lester and the pick to 1st... for some reason Lester could not consistently throw a pick to 1st... so a lot of times they just let guys steal on him lol... he was fine pitching, but to make a pick off throw, guy just had a serious case of the yips with it. That's why the Cards player had such a ridiculous lead off - and sometimes teams told Lester to NOT throw to first... because he'd throw too high or miss the 1st basemen lol.

The vast majority of these are just basic baseball plays. Guys know where the ball is supposed to go under any circumstance. They're great plays and a lot of instinctive plays, but I don't see how they are high IQ.

There were some hi IQ plays, there were also some low IQ plays, and many of these were athletic plays.

The rule is that he can’t be more than 3 feet out of the baseline to avoid the tag. There’s no way that was more than 3 feet.

I think 3:25 is more of a 0 IQ play by Tommy Pham. 18 feet off the bag staring right at the pitcher who's looking directly at him. Takes another step. What did he think was gonna happen

John Lester only threw about 2 pickoff throws a season and was often inaccurate with them. It was a well-known mental block of his. He just could not throw to first from the mound.

The general rule is the runner has 3 feet either way as part of his baseline to run in. The ump believed he was within that and ruled him safe
