I remember my first little league coach assessing our skills to determine what positions to put us. I was the tallest on the team and he started just playing catch with me. Then he started throwing harder to me. Then throwing at my feet and over my head and i caught every one. Coach pointed at me and goes, "1st base. Do any of your sisters take gymnastics?" I said yes and he said, "Have them train you on doing the splits". Best advice I'd ever gotten.

Stretches have been some of my favorite defensive highlights ever since I was a kid watching Mark Grace do his thing at 1st for the Cubs. They are much harder than they look.

To young people watching: Notice runners going out of their way not to cleat guys playing bases, that is how to play baseball! It is a show of respect to the sport and the other players. When someone gets hurt playing baseball it should be an accident baseball is a Gentleman's sport! Many close calls and no one arguing with the umpires. I like that, if your coach thinks you got cheated let him take it up with the officials. Great video!

I used to catch and play first base I will take catching any day. At least when you catch you have some serious gear. To young people if your coach puts you on first base he is confident in your ability to protect yourself with just a mitt. There is no shame in wearing a batting helmet when playing first base.Safety first.
