went to picapart. crawled into ml500 thru rearside doors. used screwdriver in hole under lower 2inch popout over latch. pried latch open, pushed door up, very heavy, have prop or 2x4 to hold door open. pop out panel on edge, then door cover panel loose , eureka, now m30 torx screws. mercades 500 has fancy studs to put in floor rails in holes to secure luggage, nice alum. system not in ml320.

Just did this repair, took about 30 min and now the part is $45 on Amazon...great vid and thanks!

@@713jtmechanic8 thanks BTW after I changed the latch I now hear the latch quietly trying to engage? Any ideas? Afraid it’s gonna kill my battery

@@sidneylara101 My experience, it quietly engaging for a moment once the tailgate is completely in the close position. If the latch is at continuous engaging mode once the tailgate is closed. I suggest to manually open the tailgate. If the tail gate opens, check the latch if bolts that secure latch to door is positioned properly.

Just finished this repair after watching 2x-- took 25 minutes!! the hardest part was getting the plastic housing off the back. but had all the right tools-- EZ PZ

That a great video but I have a question since changing the lock for some reason battery is draining everyday what could psoosibly gone wrong mine a ML350 2008

If the battery started to drain after replacement of lock. I suggest to make sure your interior lights turn off when door is closed and check instrument cluster to indicate doors are closed. If everything is good. It’s possible the new lock is faulty.

The light goes off in few seconds and lock appears to do the job of looking I guess some sensor or something in lock is at fault. Thanks mate vedios like yours saves thousands of dollars to all around the world God bless I m in Australia any help I can pass on let me know

Hi Jt. I removed the tailgate lock of my ml350, but did not replace it straightaway because I do not have the part yet. I removed the courtesy light connector and red switch connector and secured the tailgate shut with cable ties. The next morning the main vehicle battery was totally flat. Do you know whether, without any alarms or obvious sounds, whether simply leaving the lock removed is causing a huge power drain while the vehicle is sitting there parked?

Hi Paul, Sorry for the late response. I believe the courtesy light in center front interior near rear view mirror will continue to be on. This can drain your battery overnight.

@@713jtmechanic8 Hi JT. Thanks. As an update, I had a car electrics guy do a drain test (what I should have done, to begin with). With no lights on, the lock, switch and tailgate courtesy light removed, and the car 'locked' and asleep, there was a constant average 3 amp (yes 3 amp!) drain. Reconnecting the three components corrected that. So, a cautionary tale, I didn't narrow it down to a specific system but I'd recommend DON'T completely remove the parts while waiting for the replacement as I did because the car's electrics really doesn't like it.

I believe the rear SAM stayed awake all night trying to shut the tailgate but the latch is not installed. AFAIK the latch tells the rear SAM its state in order for it to return to a sleeping state.

Hey JT can I get your troubleshooting opinion.2012 ml350 tailgate not opening or closing automatically after I forced it shut.All fuses are good tried a new control module with no luck,Does the latch plays any role on the opening and closing of the tailgate.Door locks and unlocks with key fob and switch on driver side door.Door would not raise or come down

HI Fredd sorry for the late response. I didn't see a notification. There is a pump that opens and closes the tailgate. The latch is only for locking and unlocking Tailgate. I believe there is a video on youtube that pertains to the pump.

How did you know your latch was broken or if it is something else like wiring? Mine sounds like it is constantly trying to engage (burning the latch motor) with power from the battery, but it doesn't lock.

I believe mine did the same thing. It could that the motor is shorted causing the body control module to continue to engage.

@@713jtmechanic8 fixed it! had to wait for a few days from a part off amazon (about $100), and broke a few clips in the process but honestly quick and easy. One thing to watch out for for all the other users out there, the part I bought had a ball bearing that was slightly too big compared with the OEM part, so now the manual latch inside the trunk wont work, but I really could care less, I dont think I ever knew there was a manual release until I started trying to fix this part.
