It’s absolutely devastating that we lost Kiyoyuki Yanada, Micron Legend’s Megatron was truthfully one of my favorite iterations just because of his deep, cranky voice that knew how to yell.

I only recently heard of his passing, and I was super sad to hear that he passed. Whenever I was writing a story, he was always the default "bad guy" voice in my head, and he was a remarkably good one too. For me, Yanada is the voice I always hear when I think "Japanese Megatron". He was just so phenomenal as this version of the character, portraying just as well Megatron's brutality as well as his respect for his troops. He easily could have been a yelling, screaming rage monster, but he gave Megatron a certain relatability that, up to that point, I don't think Megatron had in Generation 1. Still, I think it would be a disservice for me to remember him only for his role in ML. Actually, my introduction to his work was when he played Thymilph in Gurren Lagann. Like Megatron, he just brought such a heft and weight to Thymilph (and pretty much every other character he voiced) that few anime VAs have managed to replicate. TLDR; Yanada was a brilliant VA and he'll be dearly missed.

My personal favorite role of his was Benkei Musashibo in New Getter Robo, that role featured some great mecha yells plus he did the more humorous aspects of that character very well.

Micron Legends: "Convoy, I believe that without the Matrix in your chest, you would enjoy battle as much as I do. Do you want to prove me wrong?" Armada: "I'm going to make Unicron's power mine! Try and stop me!" One is deeply philosophical, asking if the two leaders are really as different as we think they are. The other is just a grudge match.

In Armada, Megatron is just egging Optimus on. He knows his death will also kill Unicron, and he wants Optimus to be the one to do it. He also wants one last fight. I think this why he talks about Starscream being a fool. Based on his reaction to Starscream's death he clearly didn't believe that (nor do I think it was just a dubbing error), but he's just trying everything to get a rise out of Optimus. I'm sure a lot of the differences between Micron Legend and Armada were just sloppy dubbing errors, but, at least here, it seems like they were going for something entirely different with the characters. I think it's also evident with Armada Megatron's last words, telling Optimus to look after his men.

Rewatching this battle makes me realise the visual storytelling taking place just with Optimus' upgraded design. The official statement is this colour scheme is a reference to Optimus Primal, hence the deep grey with red accents and eyes. On the context of the show though... it looks like a mixture of Optimus and Nemesis Prime. When does he get this colour scheme? Immediately after his confrontation with Unicron where Optimus fails to rebuke a single thing the former says, and immediately before his climactic battle with Megatron where he basically proves Unicron right. Hell, Unicron's comments about their natures being so similar echoing in his mind as the battle grows more intense just serve to hammer the point home. And then Optimus only gets more and more brutal as the fight progresses. Tearing off Megatron's antlers to use as blades, the almost berserker roaring and growling, culminating in what I can only assume is him trying to tear Megatron in half at the waist. And unlike Megatron, who is expressing his enjoyment of the battle by constantly laughing and smiling in a way that makes him look sadistically gleeful... even though Optimus says he enjoys it, he clearly doesn't LIKE that he enjoys it. It's almost less like he's trying to get it out of his system and more like he outright loses himself in it. Because here's the thing... up until this episode Optimus did a pretty good job of keeping this part of himself suppressed. He could have manhandled Megatron to convince him to fight Unicron but instead held back, trying above all else to give diplomacy a chance and only resorting to battle when he's forced to. In a sense, that's what happens here, because he can't convince Megatron to just let their feud go now that Unicron is gone. After all attempt at reasoning fails, he decides the only solution is to murder the slag out of Megatron. And in the process, he basically becomes Nemesis Prime. A darkly coloured, violent berserker whose vocalisations are mostly growls and snarls and who brutally dismembers his opponents. He only stops and regains his composure when, ironically, Megatron is the one to say, "Stop." If Megaton didn't do that, would Optimus have led up?

It's definitely much more nuanced than Armada's "This is the only way to bring peace to the universe" reasoning for this battle. I like the idea that deep down, Convoy and Megatron are the same in terms of their love of combat. The only real difference between them comes from their reasons for engaging in said combat; and the fact that Optimus has the burden of the Matrix, which has always made it easier for him to put his duties as leader before his own urges.

Hasbro really didn't think kids in the USA were ready for a flawed hero. And yet they tried to pawn Megatron off as a sort of good guy in the very end.

To this day, I've yet to find one where either combatant resorted to using discarded body parts as improvised weaponry; damn shame this sort of ingenuity occurred at the end, and is hardly shown (if at all) by today's standards.

That's less a continuity error and more taking a different choice/direction with a character. This was an era that wanted to put a newer spin on Transformers, and that was just one of many choices resulting from that decision.
