    Wow, greatly appreciate your light speed response Peter, I learn something new, today. Your comments on how to record with Motion JPEG, may as well be lifesavers for most people, including myself. I most likely will do 1/60 if I am going to try today, now I can go back the standstill way, which is 1/125, 1/250, 1/400, 1/640, this will be easier to figure out. Video is more complicated than still, especially when I see people docking HDMI with Atomos, I dont know why they set up that way because HDMI bandwidth seems to be earlier versions, the only explanation is that they are recording lower resolutions through ALL-I.. At least now, I have a clearer picture. Once again, thank you Peter.

    If you're having problems with MJPEG it's not your computer but the drive you're editing from. Put it on an SSD or fast raid and it will run fine on a 2012 MacBook.

    I like your proxy workflow. That also works if you're trying to composite video in 4k, 8k or whatever resolution in software like Adobe AfterEffects or BlackMagic Fusion. You need a lot of free hard drive space to house all the files, but the workflow is perfect. You can add effects and transitions very easily, then replace the files before you render.

    Thank you Peter. This series has been very helpful. I have an A6000 and a Canon 6D, and I'm sure I don't need to tell you that that pair is very capable, especially for stills. It's more than enough for me. But suppose I want to step up? The 5D4 would almost get my money as a stills camera alone, but the crippled 4K makes me hesitate. I'm tempted to just wait for the 6D2 and combine that or even a used 5D3 with a Panasonic, in the process spending about the same money total but giving half of what I would have given to Canon if they had just been more sensible. A full frame 80D with the 4K of a GH5. Wouldn't that sell a ton and make a lot of profit and keep people in the system? I would budget all year for that. Instead maybe I'll spend half or possibly bail.

    Predominantly shooting stills but your recent presentations have ignited an interest in video, particularly the frame grab feature. I have a 1DX MarkII and as I will only dabble with video I don't think the MJPEG will be a problem. All my computer hardware is Apple so I will try the pro-res method or take a look at Final Cut. Thanks Peter for another great video and the inspiration that all your videos provide.

    Peter, great video, thank you for the explanation, just a quick question for you. I am both a 1DX Mark II and 5D Mark IV users, but I don't really shoot videos. I am thinking about reducing the bulk for travel, by using 1DX Mark II to do the 4K Recording video through Motion JPEG. My questions are really simple because I am going to use ProRes anyway, but I want to know since you have said, when using camera formatting, the FAT32 Windows format is the default, and you are suggesting for reformat using computer, because under the default format, recording will break into minutes intervals into separate files, which requires you to piece it together right. So, you are suggesting to reformat the card in a computer, but I want to know which format are you suggesting, NTFS, and after that was done, the recording will continue in 1 file in 29 minutes, sorry I am just a bit loss on that part. As for your latter explanation of using Pro-Res, I just want to know, is there any penalty by transcoding into ProRes like deterioation of image quality or any other things I need to pay attention. Appreciate your time, thank you.

  • @PeterGregg

    @PeterGregg

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi - that is quite a mouthful there lol. Dealing with the cards, the 1DX2 will use CFast cards and the 5D4 will not. The 5D4 is the cards that need to be formatted in the computer to get the proper writing of the files. If you are going to use the 1DX2 then use the CFast cards and not the CF cards and if I remember correctly it is all done for you by the camera. The 5D4 will NOT do the formatting correctly and you need to do it in the computer. People will tell you that certain SD cards are okay - not by me :) For the 5D4 and 4K video DO THIS: use ONLY the 256GB CF Cards by Sandisk. If you have the 1DX2 available, that is the camera to use not only for video but also for imaging. My opinion of course. Canon will not let you record in ProRes, you know that :) Both cameras do not have the fast enough HDMI to stream 4K out that port. The MJPEG is the equivalent of ProRes in quality but not in compression. The MJPEG video file is simply a bunch of jpg files strung together to play a movie. The bad part is the efficiency, the good part is you are at the upper end of the quality scale. You can use the EOS Utility software Canon gave you to export single images from the JPG stream and they will a good image file to work with. Not RAW of course, but still, a very good jpg file. I used that camera that way - shot a movie and extracted still images for pet photography and certain parts of weddings. You have to remember to shoot those movie files with the settings you would use for STILL IMAGES and NOT the settings you would use for videos. So 1/60 shutter speed isn't going to hack it to stop motion very well and all the rules for shooting video go out the window and you have to use the rues for still even though you are recording it as a video. That means the video file will be crappy for actually viewing it as a video. The reason to transcode from MJPEG to ProRes is not the camera, but the computer. My new(ish) computer (listed in my descriptions) will read and work with MJPEG files surprisingly good and there is no need to transcode to ProRes for me. I no longer have those cameras, but I have some files left over. If I was working in Windows instead of Apple, that would be a headache. And yes, I would need to transcode to ProRes 422. But the current computer eliminates that need for me. For the penalty question of transcoding to ProRes, the practical answer is no. The Lab tests would show a slight deterioration but in real life nothing that would even come to even to being an issue. That is why the simple answer is no :)

    Just got to the end of the video, I think you have covered this 5dmkiv issue extremely well, I think its really sad you're again having to toss this camera out of your tool box just because marketing in canon is still back in the 90's with its irrational decisions and not looking at the market place of today, I have to say your channel has really helped me over the past 6 months, I've learned so much from your videos and the information you put out regarding cameras. I've been looking for a camera for video, each week has seen my decision change just by studying and studying, the camera I'm most taken with right now is the Sony A7s mk 11, I would love to know your thoughts on this camera ?

I do hate the large file sizes and the fact that Canon purposely limited the cameras video function... but coming from a 5D mark Ii it is a lot less pain in the ass on the video side having in video autofocus.

    Thanks for your comment :) Yes, the entire 5D series of cameras are superb, each one bettering the one before it. The 5D4 is an awesome camera. Even the video is excellent, only the fact that Canon put it in an undeveloped way makes it very frustrating. Here is a secret I have eluded to a few times, IF YOU DON"T NEED 4K then you can get such amazing quality out of the 5D4 that it will make your jaw drop. Buy an Atomos Nimja 2, record from the HDMI output of the 5D4 in 1080p, set the Atomos to ProRes LT or ProRes422, and you will have video so good that you will be amazed. Shame the same can't be done in 4K. But in 1080, the 5D4 is head and shoulders above just about everything else. If you need 4K, then . . . you are sunk lol.

    Hi Russ - I haven't worked with Vegas in so long its hard to remember. You may want to do a little research on YT on that though cause there are some really great videos that show all about it. You can get a factory refurbished 1dx2 from canon direct for $4,800. No cards and 1 battery but I think it’s a new shutter. I couldn’t tell it wasn’t brand new. Comes with a 1 year warranty.

  • @crazyhandroll

    @crazyhandroll

    5 жыл бұрын

    No, its not worth it. That 1DX2 is probably very heavily use, if you buy it, the shutter may require service, and there is no telling how rough the user treats the camera, you should wait instead. Mark II is most likely the end of line within this year, especially Q4, Canon will probably drop the price officially, the Mark III will likely surface at the end of Q1 2020, so you should wait for the price drop, because the Mark 2 is awesome, superb image quality even at ridiculous ISO. The 6 to 7k spending should only be for the Mark III.

    Yes, a lot. But you do that on purpose. The file is so small though you won't tell much of a difference. Remember, the more you do this, the more you become really good at it. The first few times you are like when you are at a new job. Then it becomes old hat.

I'm hoping with the CFast 2.0, the USB 30 output and my superfact Xeon macbook pro and late 2016 new macbook pro, it will be easier to edit MJPEG video on my fast macs?

  • @PeterGregg

    @PeterGregg

    7 жыл бұрын

    You have it backwards :) You can edit and work faster on your OLDER Macs. The ones with Intel Sync fly. The ones without it (the newer ones) are slow enough to tick people off. More specifically, FCPX on a 2013 iMac or a 2009-2010 Mac Pro will knock the crap out of the new cylinder Mac Pro :) Same story with the Mac Book Pro's. best thing to determine if you have the "right" one is to put in a 1 minute MJPEG Canon file into FCPX (not Adobe PP, that won't do it). To just plain transcode the file to a ProRes LT file will take about 57 seconds. If it take 5 or 6 minutes, welcome to the rest of the world :)

  • @adamchen279
    @adamchen2797 жыл бұрын

    OK, so for Proxy File Option. First you create the small proxy files, which are of lower quality and hence smaller size, and then you work off them because they're nice and small and easy and fast to work with, and then you replace them with the big files, and the video editing software remembers all of the editing works you've done and automatically applies them to the Big files, and then you export the big file. Is that the logic behind the workflow?

  • @PeterGregg

    @PeterGregg

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yes exactly. The small, or Proxy files, have been around a long time. The purpose of them is only for the little windows in you editing software, not for display anywhere else.

    And what would be that final big secret that you are not revealing? Will you be revealing it or taking it to your grave? Lol :D

    No grave lol. I will probably make a video on it, bit it is simple. As bad as the 4K is to handle and deal with, the complete opposite is true of the 1080P. IF YOU DON"T NEED 4K then you can get such amazing quality out of the 5D4 at 1080 that it will make your jaw drop. Show less

    Editing the 4k with Premier CC now will automatically generate proxies if you choose that setting. It solves this issue pretty well. There is a video on here explaining it. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oYyarM2nqq6ah5M.html

    I could say that your videos are very helpful if I had the time to watch them to the end, but you repeat yourself so many times in the very same subject that something that could last 6 to 10 mins you make it 40 mins. and I do not think I have 35 to 40 mins every time I have to watch one of your videos, many of them you contradict yourself. So, 30 mins after I subscribed I have to unsubscribe. Good luck Peter.

    Peter, you have something valuable in this video, good content, but if only you could have presented it in 5-7 minutes, that’s all that it should take for what you had to say in this video! The other 33 minutes are waste of my time.

    The more I learn the more I can understand why people are saying this. Why all this stress. There is no stress with even the R. Now I am wondering if I made a mistake. I had both of them in my hand and paid more for the 5D because of the familiar form factor.

    For such a crappy camera I can't understand why so many professionals are buying it. Also for 4 years I've been hearing canon is dying, but still out sells all other companies COMBINED. Yes! I do know why professionals buy it. Because it doesn't overheat. you can hammer a nail in with it, takes quality stills, it has a full frame sensor, best auto focus out there, 4K. Now name any other camera that can do all this. Not one. This camera kicks the ass of all the other makes. All the rest are cheap, brittle video cameras. The only camera company that comes close is nikon.
