I think it's amazing and rather touching too that a little over a decade after World War II a naturalized American, a Japanese born actress was honored with the American Oscars! :) My first memory of Miyoshi was as Mrs. Livingston, the housekeeper of Bill Bixby's and Brandon Cruz's characters, in the TV series The Courtship of Eddie's Father. I remember watching reruns of the show in the early '70s. I loved her in "Flower Drum Song" too. RIP to a great lady, the lovely and elegant Umeki..

All four of her competitors deserved to win: an embarrassment of riches, one could say. Red Buttons, her lover in the film won the supporting actor; and Myoshi Umeki's character won her the Oscar. If you want to see her in some very comedic moments, see " Flower Drum Song".

Taking nothing away from puppies, penguins, and koala bears, Miyoshi Umeki was the single most adorable creature on the face of the earth at the time and a talented actress and singer as well. One of the funniest things I ever saw and heard was her imitation of Billy Eckstine. Wish I could find it somewhere on youtube. She was also something of a riot in Flower Drum Song. "My back is wet." Her performance in Sayonara was lovely to behold, but I would have liked to see Piper Laurie included among the nominees as Jean Simmons' self-destructive sister in Until They Sail.

Why not just move to Japan if you want to see more of them winning awards. Last time I checked this was America dude. They are super minority here. Not many Americans are winning Japanese awards are they? Can you name one? Probably not right? I don't even think White Americans exist in their filming industry. You talk about racist. Ha! Go to Asia and see just how racist they can get. Americans are a lot more willing and accepting. You got some nerve. Blacks are treated like dirt over there too. You would never see any in a Japanese film? They are even known to shrink Black actors on American film posters etc. What in God's name is wrong with them? You can definitely forget about Blacks winning any awards. I hope this get through to you. I will be honest with you. I do think the Asian community could get a little more love and recognition in America, but it's simply not going to be many winning awards. Simply not an Asian country dude. What do you expect?
