My girlfriend is exactly like this and I do exactly the same, you know why? Because I know her and know that she is so curious she would probably want to pick it up to take a closer look and get hurt in the process. I love that about her, except when she gets hurt by something over it, so I completely understand.

I'm a Japanese Language and Literature university student from Turkey and I have accepted by Miyazaki University for 1 year education. That's why I am searching on Miyazaki recently. You know you have been living in Japan for a long time when you started to say things like "...butterflies have also been known to puddle on rotten fruit, dung, carrion, human sweat, and rarely even tears and blood" and then followed by saying ""aww so cute".

its his true nickname...butterfly are insect, and some like dead corpse...like flies likes shit, or death corpse too,....and for the "demon" part, with your imagination you can easily associate species tastes to divine or yokai attitude..

If it makes you feel any better, grates like that are usually MORE structurally sound than a sheet of metal, because the grates can be thicker in the up/down direction while keeping the same weight. It's like trying to bend a strip of paper while keeping it flat vs just folding it regularly.
