Miyamoto And Aonuma On Training Nintendo's Next Generation Of Developers

Ойындар

In this interview with Game Informer, The Legend of Zelda's creator Shigeru Miyamoto and series producer Eiji Aonuma talk about what it's like for the legendary developers within Nintendo to work with the younger generations and what they've learned from each other. What lesson does Miyamoto want to impart before his eventual retirement?

Say what you want about Nintendo. Call them out of touch. Say they're for kids. But being a young developer and having Miyamoto as one of your tutor's is a great honor.

It's a bit different When Miyamoto first started, there was no such thing as the concept of video games. It was all still new and very abstract. So Miyamoto and other classic game designers got to define what a video game is through their own work. Young designers making their way now have "rules" and conventions to keep in mind, not to mention the daunting legacies of their mentors to live up to. Video games during the time of Miyamoto were a creative visionary industry. Now it's ultra competitive, motivated by profit and trends, directed by executives instead of artists. But the most important advice from Miyamoto here is also the most simple: just be yourself. Younger designers trying to be like Miyamoto is no good, Miyamoto never tried to be like anyone else, he just always followed his own vision and instincts. I think younger generations have a hard time being themselves and letting go of a lot of things that can hold you back

Aonuma badly needs Miyamoto to not lose compass. His comments on classic Zelda are infuriating. I don't even consider myself a gamer in the "following a trend" sense. But my life was shaped by Zelda and each iteration from Ocarina of Time to even Breath of the Wild challenged my understanding of what Zelda is or can be. The deeply infuriating part is how Aonuma considers the old Zelda, linear and boring. And he might feel bored by making such a game. But that format and the memories it brought to the table was something special. Back then you had a much more cinematic Zelda with custcenes and an evolving story. Linearity on the side the content felt alive. Breath of the Wild might be a good gameplay mechanic and a nice world design, but it feels empty at its source. I don't know if money got to Aonuma's head but the hardcore Zelda fans that played the game in the 80s and 90s are really the ones he is betraying with his comment. The classic Zelda formula ultimately is something Miyamoto has most merits for. Miyamoto was the baseline Aonuma needed to avoid becoming too focused on innovation. Zelda is also about story and a bad story with good gameplay is not what Zelda is about. The day Wind Waker released, when I saw the tapestry with the medieval aesthetic, I knew something good was on. The day I saw trailers for Twilight Princess I knew something good was on. When I saw Link face Demise, I felt goosebumps. I hated the visuals in that game more than Wind Waker but I love that kind of Zelda nontetheless. Breath of the WIld and Tears of the Kingdom also have their approach to building Zelda and beauty. But the franchise has pushed way too much into open world. The dungeons feel rushed, the world isn't compact no matter how much you explore it, after a point you get bored. Science teaches us, there is beauty in the small and minimal. Sometimes less is more. And Zelda needs their less is more moment for Zelda.
