Fabfilter Saturn is an alternative if you have this? If not you could try the decapitator on a bus and eq the frequency you want to saturate and blend back in. Spectre is amazing! 100% recommend!

would you gain dowm the mix at the end and master after mixbus or is your mixbus “your master”

So I balance the mix then I apply my mix bus processing and I mix into it. I leave the limiter on and mix through it. My mix bus is part of the mix if I take it off or adjust at the end of the mix then this will collapse my mix/undo the processing I have already done on the individual tracks. My mix bus acts as like my master. I don’t master it after that. If the client wants a mastering engineer after I will keep the mix bus processing on and send one with and without limiter on. Usually I want to keep the limiter on as it’s part of the sound of the mix. Hope this helps :)

@@edstokesmusic this clears up alot in my head i just got the landr mastering and i wanted to experiment with mixing into it rather than slapping it on at the end. one more question if the client wants a mastering engineer afterwards what would they usually do that is more beneficial than what you already sent the client e.g. make it louder than your mix or just run it through some gear to give it a final polish ?

Yep! My preferred method is to mix into it. The limiters really affects the sound of the mix so that’s why it’s important to have it early on in the process. All depends. Some clients prefer to have a second set of ears and allow the mastering engineer to do their thing which can add a nice flavour to the mix. Usually my limited mix hits around -8 INTEGRATED LUFS. Some mastering engineers will make it louder others may turn it down. To be honest personally i want the mastering to come back very transparent ie sounding the same as my mix or 2 percent better. Mastering can give the client like quality control check before release.

What he likes isn’t what you like. Music isn’t about a right or wrong way to do things. It’s about what you like and what makes you feel good
