I also explain the problem that are associated with the use of titanium dioxide in cold process soap such as white spots and glycerine rivers.
I try to give lots of hints and tips in all of my videos, so hopefully, you can use some of the techniques in this cold process soap making tutorial in your own soap making.
I hope you enjoy the video. I'd love it if you would give me a thumbs up, subscribe to my channel and ring the notification bell this helps me to grow my channel. If you have any comments or question please leave them in the comment section below and I will get back to you.

Although my cold process soap making tutorials are of a tutorial nature, they are intended for people who have a good understanding of making cold process soap. The information given is based on what works for me, however, there are lots of variables associated with cold process soap making and I therefore, take no responsibility for the results achieved when using the techniques or methods explained in these tutorials. Cold process soap involves the necessary use of sodium Hydroxide (lye) which is a very dangerous substance. Before attempting and cold process soap making you should ensure you are fully aware of the lye safety procedures and always wear the correct safety equipment when making soap.

    I agree with many comments here. I am a new CP soaper, and I really enjoy how you explain the reasoning behind why you do what you do when making soap. Your tutorials are quite informative. I take away many ideas from your videos. You allow me to see difficult projects and believe I am also able do achieve similar results with patience, dedication, and imagination.. Thank you so much for your generous comment. To be honest I don't try to hold any secrets back at all. If I don't go over something in detail then it's typically because I'm worried about going on too much in a video. Quite often when I edit I have to cut things out from a 'do they really want me to go through that' point of view. I'm more than happy if you see something I do and would like to know how, just ask in the comments. Best wishes & happy soaping - Lisa

    A small cautionary tale to anyone out there who - like me - might be using an ordinary bottle top: be sure the bolts or nuts or ball bearings are large enough to notice easily when dispensing the mixture. I used some very small SS acorn nuts just because we already had them. However, I measured the mixture when it was still quite gloopy, and since I didn't have a nice flip-top lid that reduced the size of the bottle opening, one of the nuts escaped into my rapidly thickening batter! I didn't find it until cutting the loaf, when the wire skipped around the tiny nut and left a strange divot in the side of the soap. I'm very lucky this one showed up in the cut, so I'm not giving someone a bar with hardware inside. And of course I had to go through the whole TD mixture to capture and count the remaining nuts, in case more than one was hiding in my soap...yikes, what a mess! But despite a foolish user error, this technique is absolutely awesome - thanks so much for the video, Lisa! ❤️

    Hi JoAnn, if you mix with oil, then it will last the shelf life of your oil. I typically mix up enough that will last me a month or so. For water dispersed I think you need to be a bit more careful as water can = bacterial, so if I did use water I would maybe keep the TD in the fridge.

When using this mix making cold process soap, do you take the amount you use out of the amount of oils in your recipe? Or does the minimal amount of olive oil you are using in your TD mix not make a difference? I’m probably being a bit OCD here but want to ensure I’m using the right amount of everything. Normally if I am mixing a colourant with oils I will take it out of my batter, but if this is pre made then I can’t do that. I wasn’t sure if I should reduce the amount in my recipe and if so by how much as it will be mixed together. Many thanks.

You can use any light weight oil, I typically use olive oil, but any you use anyway will be fine, I wouldn't use castor oil as it's a bit thick. It doesn't need to be an oil that's in your batter, but as you have that anyway it would make sense to use one of those. I just store mine with my other colourants, so just in a cupboard. It will easily keep for a month of so, I've not kept mine longer than that, but technically up to the expiry date of your oil. I hope this helps, feel free to ask questions as you have the. One thing I'm confused about is the ratio when you use it. If you mix 1 teaspoon td with one tablespoon oil, if you want to use the equivalent of one teaspoon td in your soap, would you not mix in a teaspoon and a tablespoon of the mix? I find for me using a straight Tablespoon works just fine, but I have a pretty light soap batter, so I would suggest doing some tests in your recipe to find the level that works for you.

I was looking into getting the premixed liquid pigment TD by Crafter's Choice and I see that it's TD mixed with glycerin. It has good reviews with no people reporting any negative side effects that I’ve read. What are your thoughts on mixing the TD with glycerin and how it would behave in CP soap? I’ve read glycerin is a humectant and will attract water and increases softness in products. Thank you for any thoughts you have!

  • @IDreamInSoap

    @IDreamInSoap

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi, I've never mixed it with glycerin so unfortunately I can't say how it would behave. Premixed things can be great as long as they stay mixed, if it all seperates out and you gave to keep shaking it you may as well mix your own. Our soaps already have glycerin in them as it's part of the saponification reaction, so adding more wouldn't change them massively, but unless you used a lot it shouldn't baldy affect them either. Sorry, probably not much help

    @@IDreamInSoap I was thinking the same thing. Reason being is I have a large jug of glycerin and TD and I'm trying to combat those white speckles in my soap. I would normally use the olive oil, but the price of OO has risen so much recently, and I'd like to save it for my CP soap recipes. Perhaps I will try a small batch and see how it turns out. It it doesn't pan out, I'll likely use your olive oil method since I would prefer not to add additional water into the recipe. Thank you for your thoughts.

    I'm back with more questions. Why do you use a tbsp of the dispersed mixture as opposed to a tsp? I have a vague idea of how to calculate stuff ppo, but I'm not fully sure I've got it right. My understanding is that you would divide the total number of oils you have by whatever unit you use to measure a pound and then multiply that number by the number of tsps you want to use. So if I had 1,000 grams of oil and wanted to add a color with a rate of 2 tsp ppo, I would divide the 1,000 grams by 454 and then multiply that by 2 leaving me with 4.4. Is that the correct way to calculate that? And my last question is can you pre-disperse other colorants in this way or does this only work with titanium dioxide?

    There shouldn't be a huge amount of extra oil as the amount of TD your using shouldn't be too high, ie less than 1% compared to your oils. If you are concerned you could always reduce the oil in your recipe to account for it, like you would if you reduced your water to account for the water in milk if you ever use 'liquid' milk.

  • @carolsmith5589

    I adore your videos - so informative! Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge. This one leaves me puzzled, though. You mix 14 tablespoons of oil (which equals 42 teaspoons) with 14 teaspoons of TD, for a total of 56 teaspoons. The mixture is 25% TD (14/56) and 75% oil (42/56). Then you say if you want to add TD to your batter at a rate of 1 teaspoon per pound of oils, measure out 1 tablespoon (which is 3 teaspoons) of your mixture. Since the mixture is 25% TD, that means you're only getting 25% of 3 teaspoons of TD, or 0.75 of a teaspoon (3/4 of a teaspoon). If you want a full teaspoon of TD, don't you need 4 teaspoons of the mixture, not 3? I suppose the difference in TD amount doesn't make much difference in the soap, but my inner math geek is confused.

  • @IDreamInSoap

    @IDreamInSoap

    Жыл бұрын

    HI Carol, ooh I completely agree with geeky maths. The reason I didn't worry about it is that with teaspoons/tablespoons which are a volume measurement rather than weight, by the time everything is all mixed in, the volume that the oil took up did not change significantly, therefore it was actually more accurate to just use x3. Overall volume measurements are quite imprecise, but I felt when I measured mine that sticking with x3 was actually closer than x4. I actually do all of my measurements by weight, so when I make mine I weigh the whole mixture and use the weight to get back to the amount of TD I want. I hope this makes sense, but I completely agree with your logic

    @@debbieescobar6267 AW, to be honest. I don't actually muck around and blend colours too much. The reason for that is I'm in the UK. If we want to sell any soap every loaf has to have a cosmetic safety report done by a chemist where you are typically allowed your base recipe plus 5 additions, so that would be your fragrance plus anything else, therefore each mica, TD etc counts as an addition. Therefore if you start blending you run out of additions very quickly. Also once we have a report for that soap you cannot change a single thing, if you do you pay for a new report, so, unfortunately, I tend to stick with the micas as they come :-( - oops just notice, logged in as Lisa Cunningham, not IDreamInSoap, same person :-)
