This is one of the first videos I watched when starting in the whole recording and sound engineering business. Now I'm here a couple of months later and finally understand all of these things. Good luck to you guys who are starting to work with music! My advice to you is to find a youtuber who you like that produces music and watch all his videos. When hearing every concept in context and how he uses it in his production you get familiar with them really quick. Try RecordingRevolution for example :D

  • @Mordi

Yes, I think the subgroups were both getting the stereo sound, where you would want to link them up in order to get Left and Right separately from the original drum-channels. I also think that once you link them up it automatically pans as it should, so no manual panning is needed once they are linked.

I love these consoles. Most people in the business don't like them for live sound. I love this desk. I have QSC rig and use a 24.4.2 first series. and it works good for me. some times I use the presets if I'm in a hurry and then i only have minor adjustments. what I don't like is it throws a limiter on almost every channel on the presets but that's an easy fix. run the channels and turn it off. The console isn't huge so I don't really worry about the sub groups. I use one for delay and one for verb. some times I'll put the drums and vocals on the other two.

I really recomended starting with the vocals first, especailly if your new. sometimes you can find yourself running 2 issues, 1 that you hav got this great drum sound and you bring up the vocal mics which are picking up spill from the kit and now the drums dont sound right. 2 you run out of space for the vocals. the vocals are the most important usually so it kind of makes more sense to start with the vocals and build up round that. I also find it really usefull to have the drums and bass play on there own to get the rythm and bass working well together. Great video for those just starting out

This will almost always be the case. The room is affecting the sound at different frequencies before it gets to your ear. You need a 'discrete' or separate mix for recording. In large systems, there maybe 'direct outs' from one board to an entire 2nd board (so it can be independently EQ'd, etc...will need a 2nd person) or multi-track recorder (for editing later). You can use a free Aux channel (2 for stereo) if they are available. This will at least give you level blend control.

I was mixing a live worship service for a live KZread stream when I didn't hear my lead singer. Well we have a a 24 channel main mixer and a separate 16 channel mixer for the live stream. So 8 xlr cables which are connected to instruments and mics arent being fed into the live stream. Well one of the cables just happened to belong to my lead singer. So I'm scrabbling to figure out what to unplug so I can connect the mic. What helped is that the xlr cables have color tape which match the color tape around microphones. However instruments didn't have tape. But I did learn after the fact that we have 3 snakes with 8 xlrs. One snake belong to the drums. The other snake belong to 8 mics. And the other snake belong to instruments. I'm thinking we should get another mixer to accommodate the other 16 channels so that we don't have to keep unplugging stuff. BTW we have that same mixer.

Can I or can I not add effects, pan, or mix the tracks from the console after I recorded them? For ex to add compressor from the unit to an uncompressed track already recorded? Please make me buy this one:)

If your limited to four subgroups I run a mono live mix and subgroup the vocals to one, drums to two, bass guitar to three and guitars to four. If there is a keyboard or second guitar I’d run the bass to the main out and sub the keyboard/second guitar to that subgroup. Why run a stereo mix in a small club? My thoughts. Thanks for sharing

Hey, great video, but I think it have been done a little wrong. If you want to get the sound in stereo, You have to link the two sub group together, don't pan them ;-) You can easy hear the difference between 2:53 and 5:33. I don't now how it is on other mixers but I am really sure that you have to do that on the Presonus.

The beauty and the struggle of it is, there is no right or wrong. typically kick, snare, bass guitar, and lead vocals are centered, and everything else is panned to make up the sound stage. just try to find a space where the instrument is clearly heard and is not masked by any other instrument.

did not get your name… your wrong about one Item in the first 5 mins…. Subgroups… its not like a Mackie where you need 2 subgroups for stereo… The Subgroup faders are Stereo. so if your drums are Panned.. you only need to use one subgroup. and your Panning will Follow… same if you use a stereo Effect Ping pong delay as an example.. and use subgroup 4 as your fader. it will ping pong both Left and right with the one subgroup. You do not need to use subgroups 1 and 2 for stereo drums…… you are also aware you can use your Aux A and B inputs for Stereo Keyboards. and End up with 28 usable channels with Faders on this 24 channel board.

  • @Infraredgrills

absolutely not correct. I own this mixer and the subgroups are mono. For stereo subbing, a pair of subs has to be used. In this video, he made the mistake of not using the "link" button. This would have married sub 1 and 2, and handled them as one, and applied all the panning and what not.
