Mixing Kodak D-76 Powder into Stock Solution | Developing Solutions

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This very basic skills video shows how to take D-76 powder and mix it into stock solution for use. Here are some key takeways from this video:
1- Follow the package instructions exactly. Chemistry requires exact procedures to ensure safe chemical mixing and proper chemical performance after the solution is mixed.
2- Do not cut the larger package into multiple smaller doses and mix those. The larger package is compound-balanced for correct developer stock solution creation at the prescribed final volume -- in the case of the package in this video, one U.S. gallon. Cutting it into smaller powder doses will almost certainly cause the concentrations of constituent compounds
to be in improper ratios and that will affect chemistry performance.
3- This video demonstrates how to make a STOCK solution from powder. The stock solution can then be used as-is and, afterward, returned to the stock tank for reuse. The stock solution can also be cut into a one-shot working solution. If you see a developing such as D-76 1+1 that means one part of D-76 to one part water -- for instance a 1,000 milliliter tank would require 500ml of D-76 and 500ml of water in that scenario. A 1+3 concentration would need 250ml of D-76 and 750ml of water. Diluted D-76 cannot be remixed with stock solution and needs to be dumped after use.

I use the same electric kettle to make d76 as i use to make a pour over. I need to descale it before my next batch

That's a good idea and great for precise temperature control.

Hi David, I'm hoping that we will advance further than pre-packaged mixers. I'm a Metol and Sodium sulfite base mixer like D76, D23 and Perceptol based developers and use variations on mixes temperatures and times. I hope that this series will be enlightening for all.

Thank you and definitely. This is a long-term project and this year it's going to start slowly with basic skills and build into more evaluative videos.

It is really surprising that based on my experience with the Kodak D76, I was able to develop RC and Harman paper prints with it and it worked very well, in two minutes or less. It is not only for 35mm film.

Definitely yes. Any developer will work on paper, in different ways and, generally, a lot slower than would paper developer. But many film developers have very nice results when developing paper because the images come in more slowly and the results are easy to control.

@@DavidHancock When I mixed Kodak 76D for the first time, I used it as a stock and did not dilute it with the paper. I used it slightly warmer than 20 degrees, and it was very active and fast, developing the paper within seconds. After a lot of paper, it began to gradually weaken in its activity, so the development took more than about two or three minutes. Minutes, until I became completely exhausted after a while. The color of the prints becomes black-brown when I am active, until it becomes light brown, after the solution becomes exhausting. In fact, what made me try it is that I read a lot about the impossibility of being able to get on paper. Many say that it is difficult. It will not work, as it is intended for film, and because I could not obtain a paper developer, I wanted to try it as a suitable alternative, and see the product myself, and the result was that the experiment was successful, and I have not encountered what is said that it will never work or that it will be very slow. This is all untrue, as its composition makes no difference. Much of the paper developer is the same material, the difference is that the film is added borax and the paper is added carbonate as an accelerator.

Nice video, thanks! I did get nervous when you were pouring the water with those binders right behind the jug... disaster waiting to happen, I thought, but fortunately all went well :-)

A tip I saw in another video was to cut open the bag of powder underwater, and then you don't create any dust at all. A little tricky to do in a jug though...

That's curious. I haven't tried it and it would seem like it would clog the opening. But it would definitely keep the dust down.

Yeah. I had trouble last time. There is a liquid concentrate that's good and there are some non-Kodak options that are the same formulas.

Is it possible to do small batches ? Let’s say for like 500ml worth of developer, rather than making the whole thing and the going bad

  • @DavidHancock

    @DavidHancock

No. The chemical compounds in the package are not likely to be evenly dispersed and mixing small batches will provide uneven and unpredictable results, at best, as the batches will have different chemical makeups.

Yeah, powder is definitely a bit harder to mix. I made a mistake the first time I used Accufine and the powder didn't fully dissolve (but wasn't visible) and it left streaks over an entire tank's worth of film. I always prefer the liquid developers.

I know the chemicals in there. You don't want them in your nose. I mix outside, into a big container so dont have to funnel the powder in, and just microwave the gallon jugs to get up to temp.

  • @DavidHancock

I concur on not breathing these for sure. Are you microwaving the chemistry after it's mixed? That seems like it would be dangerous. If you're just bringing the water to temp, that's probably an easier way to do it that me using the stove.

Gallon jugs of distilled water only. I used to be worried about leaks and exploding bottles, but have done it this way for a while now.
