Mixing JONNY CRAIG vocals w/ Erik Ron - Slaves "I'd Rather See Your Star Explode"

Erik Ron talks about working with Jonny Craig for the first time on "I'd Rather See Your Star Explode" by Slaves, and goes over his signal chain and process for mixing.
He talks about when he does and doesn't double the vocals; compression strategy using a Manley, Shadow Hills AND a Softube 1176; the stock Pro Tools de-esser; reverb with the UAD plate reverb plugin; delay with Soundtoys Echoboy and more!
Get instant access to Slaves multi-tracks and Erik Ron's full mixing session ► nailthemix.com/erikron

If you guys don't know this about Jonny he will come into a studio with the song already prepared in his head. He is constantly singing just hanging out around his house or doing his daily routine. His mind is virtually a music box that never stops. Just as another bit, he walked into the studio years ago with Dance Gavin Dance and recorded the intro to Times New Roman. One take. Without saying anything.

Could be from the fact that these are crazy over compressed. His tiny nose breathes are the same volume as his voice cuz of this. Like when he says "keep me on the ground" he sounds like he says "hround" but the G is still there subtly.

It’s a classic side effect on breaths when using melodyne or auto tune. But bear in mind almost everything you listen to these days has some of tuning. People only call auto tune out when they hear the side effects. And in the full mix it will never be as noticeable as in solo like it is now. FWIW I don’t like those side effects on the breaths

Is it just me or is this vocal wayyy too compressed. You compressed it on the way in and then 10db in pro tools? The engineer even thought the vocal sounded like it had a blanket over it. That’s because it’s squashed and has no dynamics. Reverb is for placing something in the mix not to make words in the song more audible/understandable. That’s what the an EQ boost at 2.5k is for and saturation.
