    Thanks James, a great overview. Muso's removing one in-ear is a common problem we experience. Not only do they risk hearing damage, they also counteract any benefit of having a stereo sound in their mix. Obviously better ambience is required. Do you have any tips for sound engineers trying to deliver optimal ambience for their musicians or recordings? Are there any particular shotguns mics that you'd recommend and any particular positioning you've found most effective? I struggle with keeping the band volume out of the ambience mics, which then can muddy up the monitor mix for some of the musicians. The other is issue we face by having ambient mics at the front of the stage is picking up too much of the front rows. (That can be a good or bad thing depending on who's singing there!) I would be interested to hear how other houses of worship position their mics and with what type, and any specific tricks for the engineer. Certainly your suggestion to roll off the lows in the ambient mics helps to keep it brighter.

    Excellent material. Your channel is one of the best on KZread (I think the most effective and funny too). God bless your work and diligence in helping other churches. Your tips are great! Here are two ideas for new tutorials: 1) How to use spectral analysis (I saw that you have a monitor with two analyzers). Please, make a video showing how you use it, which plugin you use (if possible), and where you leave the microphone to capture. I know this would be secondary, but I think it helps a lot. 2) How to record effectively in a pratical way. Most of us mortals (volunteers) do not have the knowledge or time to mix 32 channels, I even made 4 stems internally in my console (vocals, intruments, drums, effects) and recorded pre-mixed, then adjusted the volumes in DAW and rendered mp3. Do you have any tips, or more effective solution to have a professional result, in a more effective and replicable way for volunteers? (I think i am asking too much, but i have faith :). God bless you!

    Thanks for the kind words! It's very encouraging to know these videos are helpful. I've got a script ready for using Smaart's RTA, but wasn't sure how much demand there was for it... but I guess there is! As far as recordings go, mixing from stems or submixes is a great way to learn, biting off as much as you can chew at one time. The Beatles recorded everything on 4-track tape machines, so surely you can do the same :)

    Hi James, Great video! i'm going to send this though my whole band. I had a question regarding the inputs you get in the in-ear. Are the signals just straight out of the microphone or did you EQ/Dynamics/gate them already? We just build a in-ear rig from scratch with the Behringer X32. H.

    As usual... it depends 🤪 if I’m running monitors from FOH, I tend to just send the HPF to monitors. Most of the inputs are going to sound pretty good straight from the mic. However, if I’m running a dedicated monitor board, I’ll add some basic EQ and compression, but you’ve got to keep a close eye on the dynamics especially, since that really affects how the player is responding with their own dynamic range and can jack things up quickly.

    Thanks for this video, very helpful! I am setting up a new in ear monitoring system at our house of prayer and I wonder what the tap point in the mixer should be for feeding the monitor mixes (or personal monitoring mixers): Post Preamp only, or Post EQ, or even Post Compressor? And why?

  • @AttawayAudio

    @AttawayAudio

    For the least amount of issues, I set it Post Preamp (or post HPF if I've got the option). If you set it post (any of your processors), any changes you make at FOH will affect their monitor mixes. And while this might be fine sometimes, it can really jack with someone's monitor mix when the FOH engineer starts playing around and sweeping the EQ or squashing it with the compressor.

    Hi James. I struggle w singing with in ears. Its like Im punching my eardrums with my voice. Its like someone singing or shouting into someones ear instead of whispering....its just not natural for me..Thats why I sometimes do take an ear out... Do you recommend compression on the mix?

  • @AttawayAudio

    @AttawayAudio

    6 ай бұрын

    Compression can definitely help even out some of the highly dynamic parts of your singing to make it more pleasing to listen to. The peril you can run into is a mismatch of dynamics (i.e. should be loud, but it's quiet and vice versa) which can throw you off and make you really PUSH on those loud sections, leading to pitch tending to be on top rather than in the center. But yes, tastefully done compression can help a lot. My other recommendation is room mics turned up until they feel like your in-ears AREN'T in when they are. And mixing really quietly. Like _ LEANING IN_ quietly.

    Sacre bleu! Musicians only play one instrument at a time. Sound engineers get to play the ultimate instrument... the mixing desk. That, and the DCA mute button has the same power as a finger click whilst holding six infinity stones... :-)

    There's a huge spectrum of people who run sound, from the musicians who treat it like an experimental instrument, to a technician that treats it like a science experiment. It's possible for technicians to learn the musical side, but I've noticed it's much easier for the musicians to pick it up.
