Hey Grant - If you take a Coke bottle, add ice cubes, and add air duster, the coke bottle will hold the pressure. Once the ice melts, you are left with three clear liquids of different densities that will not mix (water, the dusting compound, and the bitterant). Removing the cap will cause an eruption of ice out the top of the bottle. If you do the same thing with a Gatorade bottle, the lid will fail under the pressure. So setting the bottle upside down on the lid will launch the bottle ~100ft in the air

somewhat off topic- concerning freezing propane: neighbor used to work in a junk yard, they would use beat old cars to run around the lot. he said if they had a dead a/c system, they would fill it with propane. the principals of it cooling as it expands is the same as the freon, ut it is much better at it. he said the cars would get cold af, like being in a freezer. of course, the propane cannot carry oil in it like the freon, so it would only last one day before it would seize the compressor.

Someone may have explained this already but with butane, when you flip the bottle, it starts to migrate to the inside top of the bottle, which agitates the carbonation and causes some degassing. That in turn opens liquid-free zones allowing the butane to move even faster toward the top of the bottle which agitates the carbonation further... lather rinse repeat exponential growth curve, bottle neck becomes rocket nozzle, etc, kaboom...

What do you think is going to happen? Everyone in a 10-mile vicinity will keel over and die due to propane poisoning? The short answer is no. Just like dry ice melts and turns into carbon dioxide, liquid propane warms up and turns into propane gas, which will readily disperse into the surrounding area until there is no measurable trace remaining. It's not like he's tainting the playground soil with lead or something ridiculous.

This is exactly how my experiments turn out, plus the occasional unexpected explosion

@ The King of Random, did you figure out why this did not work for you? Liquid propane expands at a rate of 270 to 1 when it becomes a gas. I suspect that because it was a cold day outside & you used cold coke that froze very quickly, the experiment was a failure. I suspect that if you did this on a warm day, with warm or room temperature coke, the bottle would have flown up in the air like it did in the Russian(?)/Ukrainian(?) video. Would you redo this on a warm day to show it as a success?

Grant, I grew up in a propane delivery truck. The boil point is -44F, butane is 30 something above or close to it. The manufacturers of your bottles usually put an amount of butane in to keep the tank pressures below rupture pressures and pop-valve pressures. Hint: use your thumb like you did in your nitrogen bottle rocket vid. Take care from Oklahoma Mike and Vee

What I would like to see is, fill a coke bottle with air like the experiment where you filled water bottles with air and shot them to make loud explosions. Do the same thing but with liquid propane, have some sort of ignition source near it so when it explodes the propane lights and makes a big fire ball. I feel like that would be amazing to see.

I don't know if the videos you watched are fake or not, but one important thing I noticed is, as you noticed, the propane freezes the coke, creating a barrier that prevents mixing. Once you turn the bottle over, the propane dumps out completely. Try this again, but use an empty Coke bottle. Add the propane first and then the Coke. The barrier will still form, but the two will have no choice but to mix when you turn the bottle over.

Grant, what you need to do to make it work is the following: Put in a little less Coke. The liquid propane/butane will float on top. You need to turn the bottle fast enough to invert the fluids so that the propane/butane is on top and the coke is on the bottom when the bottle is inverted. This way the propane/butane gas will expand forcing the Coke out the bottom of the bottle.

Try it again, but this time put the cap on it and let it set till the butane warms up enough and the soda thaws. You may have to rig up some sort of quick release cap for it though

Then mix the liquid propane with the liquid oxygen it and see what happens when you light it.

The answer is, no. bottles of oxygen don't contain any liquid in them, they are just compressed. even large commercial bottles don't contain liquid oxygen. liquid oxygen boils at such a low temp that it would explode nearly any container that we could put it in.

My guess is that you need to fill the liquid propane and then quickly turn it over. If you wait too long, the boiling propane will freeze the water in the coke and prevent the mixing that causes the high pressure to develop. Using warm or even slightly hot water/coke might even give it more power and delay the freezing of the water.

I can't say I'm happy watching all that coke dripping on that beautiful lawn.

I wonder if you put bullets in liquid nitrogen will they still shoot?

Hey Grant, Could you try pouring molten metal into liquid nitrogen? It would be awesome and might even make cool metal structures!

How about letting the liquid propane warm up and pressurize a bottle with the coke? If you quickly remove the cap and flip it, you might be able to get around the icing problem.
