    Grant, Thank you for sharing your experience with the Mixergy, I'm considering using this in my house in the highlands as its a Oil central heating and water. I have a solar panel array so think it would be good to match that up with the water heater. I currently use an electric shower so aim to replace that so its coming direct from the mixergy. My question is if I heat the boiler to 100% how long does it take to get to cold for a normal shower eg how much heat does it lose per hour. I currently dont have a smart meter as octopus still have to install and getting a smart meter install these days takes forever ! thank you for any insight you can give but its helped me feel better about getting one.

    Grant, really interesting demo. I have pretty new (5yr old) 250 litre tank that is heated exclusively by gas which I estimate is using ~6000kWh/yr just for hot water. I'm looking at solar currently and keen to understand how effective using solar to heat a std tank is and how much more efficient the Mixergy tank will be given it will be £2-3k to change. Any perspective you can provide would be interesting.

    Hi Andrew, I am able to have a perfectly hot shower with only 11% of the hot water in the tank due to to the way to heats using the top immersion. It is more efficient that any gas heating solution. Pair it with a Myenergy Eddi for the ultimate solar diverter

    Hi Grant. I am planning to upgrade current open vent to unvented. I only found out about Mixergy a few weeks ago and its looks great. I have 5kWp solar PV and and Eddi. I am curious - does the mixing pump vary its speed so as to heat the water at the top just enough so that it doesn't trip the cylinder stat but keeps shifting the heated water mass down the tank?

  • @GrantThomas

    @GrantThomas

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think it varies its speed and purposely heats as it adjusts, and the cold water fans out across the hot water to maintain a hot temp. There is even an option in the settings to maintain a 60 degree temp, even if it it only has 1 or 2% hot water left!

    As amazing and clever as all these heating systems are - such as the mixergy hot water tank involved here - you need so much capital investment in PV panels, inverters, battery storage and (significantly) SPACE for things such as PV panels and the all the kit. Look how brilliant but also complicated this all is. Essentially a room is given over to this stuff, whereas millions of homes just can't fit it in. As much as I'm a fan, it seems only possible or practical for those with both the means and the space to install it. Thanks for showing us your system - how did the air source heat pump trial go in the end? Do you get the mixergy tank back? I'd love to see a real-world comparison in running cost vs your gas boiler.

    We’ve just taken the plunge with pv using a home improvement loan. Justification for us was to take back control of variations in energy costs and instantly adds value to your home. As for space, an unvented tank can be fitted anywhere; loft fo example. I’m looking at using a corner of our garage, but appreciate not everyone has a garage.

    If you're able to have a shower with only 11% capacity, why do you have a cylinder this size? (Unless your household is having equivalent to 9 showers in the morning?). A conventional cylinder half the size programmed conventionally and heated fully would be cheaper to run than this setup. Nice video and nice kit, but sizing the cylinder appropriately from the outset is absolutely critical in making large savings (greater than 20% being quoted by mixerg). I'm sure I'm missing something though, i don't know your house/household members and water useage. Cheers

  • @mattmackenzie1111

    The only advantage i can see is that the cylinder can heat up a small amount of water midday when electricity cost are high, but if you have pv panels you'd just use them to provide electricity to heat cylinder free of charge. Then if you had batteries this could provide year around cheap electricity. So wheres the advantage? Most modern heat pumps/boiler would want a digital signal from cylinder to boiler/heatpump, this can modulate boiler/heatpump maximising efficiency by reducing flow temps and cycling. You just can't do this with mixergy, be great to get some feed back on that.

  • @GrantThomas

    Thanks for your reply Matt. My Mixergy is an EARLY system without the heat pump coil. All new Mixergy cylinders are Heat Pump ready. Mitsubishi would not approve a new Mixergy cylinder as part of the trial we are part of so had to have a second cylinder. However this now gives us significant capacity that we can heat using off peak energy. We also have 2 x Powerball's in the garage providing 27 kWh of storage. Net of this; we import over 60 kWh each night (December 2022) at only 7p per kWh which charges both batteries and both cylinders meaning our daily electricity cost is between £4-£10 depending on any mid-winter sunshine. In the summer we will be largely off-grid.

    As a combi boiler owner I just cant see the justification for spending £2k getting a cylinder like this - yes you can use octopus go to heat it up overnight, yes you can use some solar power in the day to heat it up - which is fantastic, but why constantly try and heat up 250 litres of water 24 hours a day 7 days a week when you can just use 50p worth of gas, to heat up 50 litres of water for a nice long shower between 7am and 7.20 am and then not heat anything for the rest of the day till your back home at 6? The amount of KWH your immersion used in your stats just for heating your cylinder was like double what I usually use in leccy for my whole house per day? *confused*

    I've just came across this cylinder and curious to what your comments means asking why would anyone want to heat up 250L 24/7 365. I thought the whole idea of this cylinder was to avoid doing that so who would be heating it fully full time, am I not understanding your question correctly?

  • @MagicianMan
    @MagicianMan2 жыл бұрын

    Am I right in thinking that you said the Mixergy has a "Solar Energy Diverter?". And then go on to talk about the Eddi - which is the solar energy diverter which costs ~£500 with the optional but lets be clear, 99% required, WiFi module (that attaches to your Meter Tails and reports to the Eddi device when there is excess solar energy). What the Mixergy has is 3 separate Immersion Heating Elements. 1 your 'traditional' bottom mounted and then 2 separate 'top' mounted immersion heaters. One of which you have wired into a manually set up timer and the other which is then wired to the Eddi (solar energy diverter). Also everyone keeps talking about Octopus Go or Octopus Agile or similar, what happens this year when, due to rising prices Octopus removes the Go/Agile tariffs, or there is no longer any "cheap" electricity (as is likely) and all prices are at the Standard, OFGEM, Capped Variable Rates - currently around 27.22pkwh (until October 22) then likely to be 40.83 (+50%). I am not saying that the Mixergy Tank isn't any good. I am saying that attributing its performance to low cost energy is a poor metric. If you have a solar PV array that generates more electric than you use (or has excess energy when your not in) then its almost certainly a good deal. However if you already have a Solar PV Array and an Immersion Tank then buying a Solar Energy Diverter and installing that is going to payback your investment much faster than ripping out a perfectly good immersion tank and paying for a plumber to install a Mixergy Tank.

  • @GrantThomas

    @GrantThomas

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for your comment. Yes I already had a Myenergi Eddi solar diverter and before that an Immersun. The twin immersions are at the top the factory fitted is as the base. Off peak electricity is here to stay; even the 'new' Octopus Go has off-peak at 7.5p per kWh and peak at 35p - and using EITHER the Mixergy Schedule OR the Eddi schedules you can heat the whole tank using cheap off peak electric. And with the price of gas it is still a lot cheaper to heat using off-peak electric

  • @handle1196

    @handle1196

    Жыл бұрын

    @@GrantThomas Is it still cheaper to heat by 7.5p off peak electric than it is to heat by gas? One 3Kw emersion will take 2 or 3x longer than gas to heat the water.
