Mixed teams for Exploration does not make sense. If that is a problem with that, first of all, exchange parts of the members ;-). Planning requires decision on the material and an agreement on the very same. Got your point Achim ;-).

Maybe good advice is not to dive beyond the least common denominator of equipment or diver. Still the issue arises that maybe the more advanced buddy can easily adapt to the other but not the other way around if there is a serious issue.

It is a pretty fair take. I do see it is a point of safety as well. I think most of us that does SCUBA diving have been in situations that has given a lot of stress in the moment. The psychological factor of stress is just that you do what you have trained. If you train with different equipment, procedures might be different, and as a consequence you might do the wrong thing in the moment, when it counts, or even worse you begin to panic and is unable to do anything / becoming a "situation" yourself that requires problem solving from others. You can get away with mixed teams for recreational diving, as the margin for error is quite a bit wider than stuff like wreck penetration and cave diving. But it is always another factor adding to your mental load.

Dead right on. Mixed teams are not "teams". The value of a team is in redundancy, which entails both redundancy of equipment, and redundancy of judgement. If your team member is not carrying the same equipment as you, there is obviously no redundancy of equipment, and there is an obvious discrepancy in judgement. This dive has failed in the planning stage.
