Mixed Media Sketchbooks and Art

This video is about why I'm increasingly making and drawn to mixed media art, both in sketchbooks and making works on paper. I share my tips and how I like to combine different mediums and use mixed media in different subjects.
Thanks for watching,
Sonia

Your wonderful videos are even more inspiring than ever since my sister has just been diagnosed with lung cancer. Never smoked a day in her life. I love this mix media video which is full of ideas. I have just pulled out my Art Graf Watercolor Graphite. Getting feelings and thoughts out of my head along with my Caran D' Ache Neocolor 1 Crayons. Thank you for sharing today. 😊❤

Sorry for delay in replying- I have kind of been dealing with a stressful incident that has needed a lot of my attention, so I've been a bit absent from art making and being online. I am so sorry to hear about your sister, I can only imagine that you are going through an incredibly difficult time and I hope you and your family are doing OK. I know myself I am prone to intense rumination and anxiety in times of stress- and that art making is a healthy distraction and way of relaxing so I really must get back to it again. Yay for neocolor 1 crayons- good reminder to get mine out again, best , Sonia

I enjoyed this video. I agree with everything about don't be precious, just use it. There is a real freedom in that. I share my very silly, childlike art with anyone that will look at it. LOL I figure it might encourage them, because they know they can better than mine. :) It's such good therapy too.

@@soniabrittain Yes, I have been finding that doing my art daily gives me something to always be thinking about, and the therapeutic part is wonderful. I'm sorry you are going through a hard time. Just do something and I think you'll feel a difference. I take my little sketch book everywhere with some pens/gel pens, pencils and make marks. God's blessings on you!

I have used mixed media for years but over the time have dropped some things for journals or sketchbooks. I do not use gesso, acrylic paints or acrylic mediums, ruler, eraser, washi tape alcohol markers and metallic paints or pens. Old books, magazines cut in half, composition books, hand made books, map directory from shopping centres and basically anything with good paper are great to work in. I do a lot of off the page things, I have made paper mache bowls and used gouache and crayons on them as if they were a page, decorated boxes, bottles, cans (no flowers or other things attached)matchboxes. Artist trading cards are the most fun and quick to do although my preference is altering playing cards. You could try 6x4 inch watercolour cards or use old cereal boxes cut to size for small works. Off cuts of wood make great mixed media houses ( acrylics come out then), there really is no end to what you can use. I love carving stamps, mosaics, crocheting puppets, there is always something to do at my place. I have a very strict rule for my sketch books in that I never share them with anyone, they are for my own enjoyment, experimenting and free play. Not even family get a peek in. It is so nice to have a little sanctuary all of my own.

Wow so many interesting ideas, very inspiring, thank you for sharing. That is a good point about maybe making one a sanctuary for myself, especially at the moment as I'm a little to stressed out so maybe it would be an appropriate but private place to explore my feelings on a private issue, thanks for commenting sonia
