Mixed Media Painting with Dave and Erick

Ойын-сауық

Erick Grove and I have been working away for a while on perfecting the most streamlined, versatile and predictable painting method with acrylic and mixed media. We're still learning over here, but we wanted to share with you our process that we've been using with a lot of success. We'll be using acrylic paint, airbrush paint with an airbrush, and colored pencil on smooth bristol board. Come by and paint with us!

    Jeff Miracola (a Magic: the Gathering artist) does fantastic mixed-media work in pretty much this manner, also utilizing a lot of washes. I haven't seen a video from him in awhile but he's definitely worth watching for his technique (and results!). ETA: Greg "Craola" Simkins is also a brilliant mixed media artist working mainly in acrylics. The tones and shading he's able to achieve are astonishing.

    Thanks David. Your channel is really motivating me to get into a regular habit of drawing again. I drew endlessly as a kid but apart from doodles fairly dropped off. In my mid twenties I picked ot up again to help with depression. Mostly drawing friends in comic book like situations for their birthdays and such but it ended up with me writing and drawing a single issue of a comic. Took me years to actually finish and it still isn't technically because I never printed it despite finishing all the lettering. I did it arse ways but I learned so much and improved my drawing a little at the time. So much that I had to redo some of the earlier drawings because the quality difference was jarring. I've let it fall away again but I am slowly making steps to improve what I cab do and learn form, depth and anatomy. Thankfully I have an army of Marvel Legends so I have plenty of reference tools and I visited New York twice in the last 2 years and am trying to get more real life reference photos. I'm currently trying to do a scene with Mles chasing Scorpion in a subway station. The figures are great but I'm trying to apply framework under the reference to give it more life. Honestly your videos are a god send. How you deliver them just makes me want to get practicing

    45:53 that’s how I felt about Giffen! I wish more artists would get experimental. You have really adapted yourself into quite I nice position so I can’t blame you but when an artist actually releases work in a different style it’s refreshing. Imagine if Sienkiewicz decided to stop developing his style after he lost all his older patrons when he first switched it up. What a loss that would have been.

    Several years ago I did some airbrush on cars and motorcycles and I discovered if I mix the color 50/50 with clear I could freehand relatively sharp edges and lines because the majority of the paint strokes would accumulate where you want it and the overspray was practically invisible.

  • @erickgroveart

    @erickgroveart

    10 ай бұрын

    we were around 20 PSI here but I spray as low as 5-15 psi. All depends on how thick/thin the paint is and what we are aiming for (thinner paint needs less psi). The initial spray wth the Paasche can be done as low as 5 psi to achieve a nice splatter

    I love hearing you say Simon "definitely was using airbrush", I exclusively use spray paint and have no issues with controlling it what so ever, especially when youre using it to throw zip type fades or mask areas. Ive spoken to Simon about this in detail, and you David at NYCC last year... Simon gets a real chuckle out of the perception of him using airbrush, he just loves the speed and loseness of a spray can, for me its jsut from my GRAFFITI roots, for example 👉 kzread.info/dash/bejne/e2Rno9WvXdTMoZs.html at the :40 second mark. ✌
