    Thanks so much for doing this. I've been playing music for decades, but I just started trying to record and mix full songs at home. I use Logic. I'm still not totally satisfied with the results. So I'm trying to learn how other people approach it and accumulate as many tips and tricks as possible. I would love to see breakdowns of your other songs. I also wouldn't mind seeing some of the tracking stage -- what mics you use, how you position the mics, what settings you use on your guitar amp, and so on.

    You already loved my comment! Well I’ve got one question. When talking about the two 57’s as a snare mic you said flip the phase? What do you mean? I know the concept of in phase but how do you flip it like you say?

  • @JoeEdelmann3

    @JoeEdelmann3

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@jacobperleoni8549 good question! There are often phase invert switches on mic preamps or mixer/interfaces (they are usually labeled ø ). I tend to flip using my Universal Audio preamp. But Logic’s stock “gain” plug-in and almost all the Waves channel strip plugins will have a phase button as well so you can also do it post recording! And the reason is I believe because of minute timing differences between the signals hitting the two different mic capsules, which means their peaks and valleys of amplitude will be misaligned leading to phase cancellation and a thinner sound.

    Hey Joe, great vid my man. If you were ever wanting to do a tinker tailor soldier sailor cover that would be sick. The synth on that is the stock patch 333 of an oberheim matrix 1000 so it would be pretty easy to get a super close synth sound. Keep up the great content!

    if you had your ssl bus comp set to do +4dB of makeup gain, but -2dB of gain reduction, you're really just turning the drums up, the effect of the compression is pretty negligible

  • @JoeEdelmann3

    @JoeEdelmann3

    Fair point! Although it does seem to color and react a little bit different than a straight 2db boost. In other contexts/song, I will do a lot more compressing (especially parallel compression) on the drums as well.

    Certainly possible, although latency may become an issue (the milliseconds of time it takes your computer to process the plugins and output the sound back out of your interface). A small interface like a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 may do the trick!

    So much production work goes into your tracks, how long do you reckon you would spend in total on each song?

  • @JoeEdelmann3

    @JoeEdelmann3

    3 жыл бұрын

    I usually spend roughly 3 hrs of 5 to 7 total days per song, including the initial prep work and the mixing as I go along. Depends on if I’m collaborating w Taka though since we share tasks and he does a lot of the editing. So maybe something like 20 hours a song? It’s fun though so I often lose track of time!

    Do you ever get certain notes that resonate louder than others when recording bass? Like so bad that a compressor won’t catch it? My P Bass does it, I’ve heard that miking an amp will fix this, instead of recording DI

  • @JoeEdelmann3

    @JoeEdelmann3

    3 жыл бұрын

    Oh yeah, 100%.... that’s exactly what I mean. Yeah, the compressor won’t completely solve this. There are also multi-band compressors where you can compress each of frequency groups differently, I’ve had some success with those. But yeah part of it is just how the bass resonates. I definitely spend time paying attention to the fret and string choices Colin or other bassists use since each string on the bass can sound so different. Same with guitar chord voicing too.

    Volume automation can help with this. You can also automate your EQ to cut certain frequencies at certain moments.

    @@rome8180 that sounds way too tedious for my level of patience, lol. I’m probably just going to pick up a decent combo amp and throw whatever mic I own with the lowest freq response in front of it, see if that changes things in a good way. The Beatles used to mic Paul’s amp and I really like the result. If I can get within a mile of that tone using plugins and a P Bass in a spare bedroom, I’ll be stoked kzread.info/dash/bejne/k2ltytJ9mtbgeJc.html

    I just bought a bass and this was the first thing I noticed. Going to give it a good set up as I’m getting some phasing too, which might be the intonation, but the uneven resonance was definitely an eye opener (having never played bass before).
