Nice job Ed😁 Basically once you get what the client needs, you can nail the mix. That’s exactly what our job is. You don’t need a better compliment than that.

Enjoying your content guys! You're doing awesome! Thanks 😎👍 Wow... Totally different mix! So much energy and dynamics! As far as reworking the snare.... I saw a really cool trick recently from produce like a pro... Where He added a sample, He fed it into the reverb and then removed the source sample... So you had this really natural sounding snare that was quite enhanced and a really transparent way. I've been playing with the idea of putting a little bit of cross feed into mixes... So that they translate better to headphones. Have you tried that? Just a center the mix a little more when someone's head when they're not using any sort of spatial audio that does that or listening on speakers.... Damn... No offense Paul... Your mix is really good... But i am so loving the energy and throwback awesomeness in Ed's mix! We need to go back to that kind of sensibilities! I think modern production is getting a sterile is a lot of popular modern song writing! That mix is so alive....

I started mixing this last night. So many tracks it’s a bit of a pain to get going. It makes me appreciate Ed’s mix though. You can hear interesting stuff everywhere. The snare is great to, it’s got snap. I wouldn’t pick it either but my mum didn’t pick me 😅

Get Lucky has some real beef in the low end and low mids and highs are silky smooth and dynamic - Ed mix is thin sounding in comparison with small sounding low end

Thanks guys. Always look forward to Saturday mornings and the next video. Totally subjective. Pleased you both approached these mixes separately. Listening on Focal Evo 50s through a Presonus Studio 68c. Ed's mix feels more genre specific and I like it best end to end. If Paul had more control over the specific elements, replacing the drums and bass and adding in more modern synth elements, I think it would have rocked. I really like Paul's breakdown. Sounds tight and modern with a tasteful disco vibe!

I don't anticipate presenting an essay here but you never know ;) =] Listened to Ed's new mix through my iPhone 11 Pro Max and its speakers ;). I still believe that the first mix had a lot to do with Ed "learning Pro Tools" and there may have been also a "what is this song trying to do" "vibe". I didn't think the first mix was terrible per se, but I could also tell that it sounded "inexperienced". I think the feedback that the most helpful for Ed was "what is this song trying to do" or the overall vision of the song. So keeping in mind with the feedback plus going back to a set of tools you are more familiar with using, I could hear the improvement right away. I think the one thing I would have done is have the BGVs pop out at a few more spots throughout the song, especially during that instrumental break. But all in all, I definitely agree with PDP there that it was a vast improvement and a very strong contender. By the way, kudos to PDP not only for giving feedback for your new mix, but also saying that they fucked up in not giving you that vision from the onset. I would say the takeaway is to make sure you know what that vision is from the onset. And as far as what tools you are using, use what you know and use what works. If you think about it, if Mark made it clear that it was the best submission he has heard so far, I'm sure there were plenty of other mixes that "used Pro Tools". Once again, it's not the tools, it's how it's being used that makes a difference. Went back also and listened through my audio interface [Steinberg UR22C] and through my Sony MDR-7506, which I use for tracking and initial mixing. I think it also works as a headphones mix but it's also clear that it works with speakers and in an open space. Regarding Paul's mix after hearing everything that was said: so this is a case where Paul has his own vision grafted onto someone else's and using someone else's material. In a way, this is closer to how an artist makes his own music where you have a vision that's yours but can also evoke other things, such as "I want an electronic rock pop sound" or whatever. In so doing, it will be a matter of performing trade-offs because of what you are working on. Yes, you can make a "Dia Lupa/Abba" production out of this particular track. But sometimes, just because you can doesn't always mean you should. Like with the vocals, I understand the rationale for keeping it nice and tight in the center, but would have been a case where it wasn't necessary for that song because the vocals seem to beg to be more dynamic, more natural, etc. And yes, the headphones sounded better than the speakers, though the speakers weren't terrible either. And yes, I find that if you want to make good music that you can be proud of and that others can like: listen to a lot of different things and learn from it. I have my preferences and inclinations for sure and that will definitely be reflected in what I make. But I also have exposed myself to a lot of other things and those also play a role in what I make. It's this amalgamation of these different elements that what makes me me. Not everyone can [insert name here] and that's not the point. You need to be you ... preferably at your best. You two have good hearts and heads on you and you are in it to keep a good thing going. Keep up with the good stuff, mates. Cheers =]

Hey Ed and Paul! I want to say, the BEST thing possible that anyone in the audio field can do is take criticism and DO something with it to improve. It IS hard to take criticism about something we put our hearts into, then having that rejected, hurts. But it's NOT a rejection. If someone takes time to give harsh criticism, it's because they HEAR or SEE something in us that demonstrates that we can achieve a higher degree of skill. That's how I look at it, and I greatly appreciate when people who I think have a higher degree of skill than I do take time to give some of their insight. I've ran into quite a few people who completely shut down, and then start attacking or trying to devalue the more experienced mentor. So, if you ever travel over to my channel, feel free to unload on how much my music mix sucks, as long as its heartfelt! :D good to "meet" you guys! PS - I don't do videos of me because, well, no one wants to watch some fat dude in a wheelchair who can't speak type to them while they do whatever. So, yea. I just post music, and it's all electronically created. I don't use AI to write my stuff. I write it. I don't use AI to master or mix. I do it all by my ears. Cheers :D

Air pods are still the thing me and Ed need to invest in. You can get cheaper versions but we'd probably be looking at the most modern revision and they aren't cheap for ear buds!!

I just think Ed's bass Guit wants a tiny bit less sub and some more defining midrange honk. Or it might be more complicated than. Revised midrange EQ maybe. Maybe compression that focus towards more punch and tightness. But it's not problematic and certainly when inatrumentation is at its fullest. Also hearing on headphones to harmon target. And Paul wasn't hitting the automation in general, which stole my attention. Or drums. Ed accepting the snare and working with it really seemed tangilable. I also wonder if Ed straight up sacrificed other elemnts to not steal the space and bigness of the drums in a better way. Or automation again. I also thought Paul's bass felt a bit too "split" with upfront narly midrange and decent sub but not in a powerful unit that leads the movement. Could be I'm used to Bernard Edwards and Nathan East bass that impeccably just dominated how songs move. The song might not have that kind leader of movement that stands strong in the middle of these elements tornadoing around. The challange seems intriguing. I'd like to try to mix it to understand what the challange really is.

I've been thinking about this lately not sure if either of you two have approached a mix like this, would love to hear your thoughts TLDR, you take your production without any effects and "orchestrate" effects e.g. you have a guitar playing in X octave then it's reverb is near to the next octave similar to how you might orchestrate certain orchestral music And applying the approach of: - Doubling a line = adds weight to a part - Adding an octave = helps project the part Other stuff as well like adding in sources to help accent just the transients In terms of how to do it I suspect once you have the dynamics and effect set you use Ceilings of Sound Pro to help conform sounds to certain frequency curves.
