    Hi, your videos are brilliant, thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience, I’m a V68W Mits Shogun badged driver in the UK. 3.2DiD with V5A51 transmission and transfer case. Sadly, I am finding it enormously difficult to pin down anyone who would attempt to work on my 2005 short wheelbase. I have the common flashing diff light as well as the traction control lights illuminated constantly. It started to malfunction June 2021, I took it to my local garage, and they suggested a specialist auto box shop, who had my car until Sept. They changed the five switches on top of the transfer box as well as the solenoids under the air box! Still the same problem! They gave up and directed me to the main dealer! The main dealer had it until Dec 21st, but could not sort the problem. They had had communication with the auto box specialist, but did not realise that the switches that were changed were eBay switches, so did not bench test them. Since I have collected the car from the main dealer the auto box no longer transfers to 5th gear and the changes are not as smooth as they were, in fact I am changing the gears through the + and -, but still no 5th gear. I wish I could pin down a workshop who could diagnose and fix my problem here in the UK, South Wales, to be precise, just like you. This all started when I asked my local shop to change the oils and filters on the V5A51 and transfer box! Could this have been done incorrectly and caused the shifting problems on the main gearbox? If you or any of your followers know of an experienced UK based specialist, I would be grateful if you could pass on that information. My apologies for this long, drawn out, rambling, yes desperate, desire to get my Mitsubishi fixed. A

    hi, make sure you check all the basics first - good strong battery, electrical connections, good earth strap connection- these should also have one from the transfer case to chassis ( often earth straps are bolted to paint so connection is only through thread of bolt - test across strap before and after a squirt of wd40 or similar for reference ) , also check the transmission relays and connection and earth on the pcm i think is in kick panel. then you need to go into the trans or transfer case to explore further. often solenoids/sensors are contaminated and/or leaking. a good scan tool should be able to show you live data and actuation of the relevant solenoids through the upshifting and downshifting. hope that helps cheers if deserves a beer

    Awesome resource mate! By the way, the TCC solenoid locks up some clutches so that there’s no slip in the torque converter. That solenoid doesn’t do any shifting at all though. It’s speed and throttle dependent so that if the revs are too low, the auto won’t lock up the TC and possibly cause a stall. Temperature dependent so that it doesn’t lock up while the AT temp is too low.

  • @YepThatsIt

    @YepThatsIt

    3 жыл бұрын

    hi, thanks for that 👍 have you ever pulled a v5a51 tconv apart? they work much differently to many other tconv. there is constant pressure through the shaft to keep tcc disengaged ( the pressure is sealed through the spines - no seal ! it pushes the piston that has lining on it away ) then when tcc solenoid applies it beeds off the pressure and tcc is applied/locked up. the balance of pressures is critical on these or the tcc with pulsate and cause alot of heat. we had one where once the trans temp got over 70c, and coasting tcc would lockup for about 2km only and then disengage, you would need to turn off vehicle and same would happen again after 2km. we managed to get trans temp over 95c and even put a temp probe through an unused bolt hole in bell housing and temp there showed 135-140c ! i should make a vid of the internals of v5a51 converter operation. cheers

  • @zeitgeist785

    @zeitgeist785

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@YepThatsIt ahh, very interesting. That’s another source of heat that this box has, the other one being the high stall ratio which means lots of TC slip heating the fluid. And then the ECU only gives a high temp warning when the fluid is way above 100 degrees. Initially, there was a bug in the ecu where the temp that would trigger transmission limp mode was higher than the temp that would trigger the AT Temp warning light! Anyhow, You know way more about these autos than I do and reading your comment, I get now why you also changed the TCC solenoid. I’ve installed a TCC lock up kit from MM4x4.com.au on my Challenger which engages up the TCC a lot more so will keep an eye on that.

It goes into reverse ok (mayb a small delay) but won't go forward anymore. What I've done so far is removed the sump , changed the gearbox filter , replaced sump then refilled with fresh atf . Engaging drive failure happened over a week , first it took longer to engage, then failed to engage leaving us stranded for about an hour , then after lots of engage/disengage- it went into drive so we went home , & that was the last time . Any advice on that is welcomed

    I congratulate you for your video! I wanted to ask you a problem that I have to see if you can help me. I will be as brief as possible without much explanation. My transmission makes the changes perfectly when it is cold in the morning, but when it gets hot it starts to have a delay of about 2-3 seconds when I change from D to R or from N to R-D. The oil level is perfect (which by the way is measured with the hot and N transmission). I would like to know if you know anything about what happens, I don't know if it is a solenoid or a valve. It is rare that when is cold works perfect and when heating these delay failures begin and sometimes it makes strong changes. Greetings and waiting for your response.

I drove it last week and was faultless and I thought it had sorted itself out but going out again a while later it was back to acting up. Could it be a transmission speed sensor? I hope it's something that won't cost a fortune as I've just bought it to fit my wife's wheelchair in it and I fear I've been stung. I've bought input and output speed sensors I'm just waiting for a friend to fit them as I'm a bit too old and knackered to be crawling under trucks nowadays. It's had the ATF changed last week but no better 🙁 Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Martin.

    Hope you're doing well, I have a question hopefully you can help me out with, and I'm more than happy to spring for some beers. 2001 3.5L with v5a51, my issue is in automatic mode in drive I loose forward momentum/gear engagement in first gear when the L/R solenoid deactivates at about 4-7 kmh If I'm rolling and obtain the forward speed where the trans shifts to second everything resumes as normal from there. The transmission functions and shifts flawless through the rest of the gears in automatic, and reverse works as well. In manual mode all gears work as intended including first gear as the L/R solenoid stays activated. Trans has about 160km on it, fluid was changed recently. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Guys, for you guys that dont have a jackstand to refit the valve body, like me, this is what I did. I cut a piece of fiberglass plate, could be metal, with the exact size of acumulators and bolted to oil pan screws. This was I placed the acumulators and bolted the plate that hold them together. Then I partialy bolted the valve body, removed the plate and finished tightening the body. I dont know how to upload a pic in this comment.

    hi, if goes into limp mode or gives fault code...usually indicates a electrical issue or contaminated solenoids and/or sensors....unless its a slip code which might indicate internal pressure loss somewhere. leaking solenoids will not give a fault code. few beers always well received...link is in description. thanks & cheers 👍

    Also the symptoms are as follows: 1. Car drives in first gear at walking pace but will no upshift no matter how high the revs go and if I persist on accelerating it stops moving, I then have to put it back to park and then to drive just to get it to move, when I put it in Tip Tronic mode at first gear it moves but as soon as I select second it's as if I have applied the breaks, the car stops. 2. It Jerks/jolts when I put it into reverse and a clunck noise comes from the transmission, but after that it moves normally in reverse. Fluid is Fresh and genuine Mitsubishi, and it's a little overfilled as it has a transmission cooler also. I decided to rebuild it as it completely fails on me last year (direct drive planetary gear chewed itself into oblivion).

    Hi from NZ. I would love to buy you a beer if you can help me. I have a V4A51 in my 2002 Mitsubishi Challenger / Montero Sport (engine 6G72 VIN JMF0RK9602J001169). After 20 minutes of running it won't shift into overdrive and stays in 3rd gear (changes down ok). All other gear shifting seems fine. It seems ok from cold, then after 20 minutes you lose OD again. I have read all the Mitsi forums. I replaced "Freewheel Clutch Control Solenoid Valve" (MB937731) 4 months back and it seemed to fix the problem, but it is doing it again. The forums talk about replacing an "overdrive relay" under the glovebox. I cannot find this relay. Do you know where it is? Should I replace the 5 solenoids in the transmission as well as the "overdrive relay"? My mechanic's scanner did not detect any error codes. I appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks.

    hi, can be a few things causing issue. firstly always check the basics...fluid level, battery fully charged and strong, electrical connections to/from trans good, earth strap not high resistance across it etc. generally if you don`t have fault code will mean its a mechanical problem or a solenoid could be leaking/sticky ( computer only senses when electrical parameters are outside programmed values). many solenoids fail when they warm up but show up as ok at room/low temp. make sure you also check/replace the trans fluid temp sensor - tft which is located on valve body and check solenoids. i have never replaced the relay you mention. you may do line pressure test ( there is a line pressure adjustment screw on valve body -pressure increases when the screw is turned counter-clockwise and you should adjust it to the middle of the nominal range when transmission is in "d". the nominal line pressure is between 142-152 psi and each complete turn of the adjusting screw changes pressure about 5 psi ) and/or lower valve body and do an air pressure test on clutches/brakes to make sure they are working ok and not losing pressure somewhere ( just be careful not to mix up accumulators/springs when lowering valve body and check the orings on the little tube sleeves ) if you have internal pressure leaks in the trans, when the fluid warms up and thins out, the fluid will pass through and leaks or worn components much easier...maybe add a trans oil cooler and bypass radiator/heat-exchanger completely....i would also recommend taking it to an automatic transmission specialist if you arent brave enough to tackle the job, as mechanics also sometimes/usually wont/dont have experience or knowhow. now my mouth is dry....hope that helps, good luck and cheers
