Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV | Best hybrid on the market?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I had some problems filming this one, weather and temperamental equipment but we are here. The Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is now available in Ireland and I thought you should find out everything there is to know.

Evening Bob, enjoyed your review as usual. I have been driving a 152 Outlander for about 30,000 km and find it great for my journeys around town. I can easily get 40-45 km on electric mode in Summer, it drops back to about 38km in winter. When on a motorway when the battery has been depleted, one cannot achieve more than about 9 l/100 km or just under 32 mpg; it is a big bus for those speeds. In contrast, on a pleasant meander in Connemara you can easily achieve 4.6 l/100 which seems impossible- my motorbike consumes far more. The biggest surprise for me has been the need for an annual “battery test” for the traction battery- at a cost of Euro 199! That offsets the low annual road tax a little. Of course, this was in addition to normal servicing for the vehicle in general and ICE components in particular. Towing has been no problem- it just pulls, ideally with some juice in the battery. I agree with your comments on the interior, but it wipes clean and nothing falls off so it seems a worthwhile approach and not being bang up to date never goes out of fashion. One thing you did not mention is visibility out: lights are fantastic on these grotty evenings and rear-view camera is fantastic. And- you can switch off the bleating rear proximity warning sounds when towing! One alarming feature; when nearing an empty fuel tank, an alarm goes off. It shows well over 60km remaining range and you are lulled into a false sense of security. When the estimated range remaining drops below 50km, it suddenly goes to -.-. Zero remaining range. Now, this is a false alarm. I have panicked the first time and gone out of my way to fill up. I have learned and now know I that really have more than those 50 km left- I have not run out of fuel yet. Best of luck with your remaining time on the exciting EV journey.

Gerietis just what I said. I am advised that Mitsubishi Motors demand an annual battery test for warranty compliance- this is an overnight job from a depleted battery. Agents will charge differing amounts for this unexpected addition to the servicing cost- I was quoted 190.

Bob Flavin - Thanks Bob :) I’m going to be getting one soon on the Motability scheme in the UK as I’m disabled. I’ve had a 24kW Leaf for the last 3 1/2 years & covered over 50,000 trouble free “green” miles. I wanted to stick with a pure EV but there’s not the option anymore with Motability. So the Outlander is the only hybrid that can rapid charge (I intend to drive it as much as I can as a pure EV) that’s still on Motability. Also the extra boot space is much needed for my wheelchair :)

Hi Bob, in Eco mode the heater and de mister function are battery powered meaning the ICE will not kick in saving fuel etc. The tank is only 45L and is adequate as the battery only range is nearer 50Km, just drove home from work, 40km and still 15 left. (M50 and heat on full). First 500 KM on new car, same model as reviewed petrol consumption is 0.4L/100KM Charging nightly. Instyle model is 1,000 euro cheaper than diesel equivalent. Great car and well ahead of the possie at this price point.

Except for this miss on the seats great review! Don’t worry - I had mine 2 years before I figured out that and the fact that you could recline the back seats slightly LOL. The other thing I’d mention is the charge port is Chademo not CCS - which does open up the possibility of Vehicle to Home with a suitable inverter that can negotiate with the CAN bus on board.

Hi bob The back seats do fold flat you have to lift the seat part up then lower the back rest. I've had mine 3 years and 21000 on the clock it's great hardly put any petrol in because my commute is about 10 miles each way so 100% electric. Over the 3 years it's saved me approx £4500 in fuel cost happy days

Bob, just bought the usa version, cost was much less here. My state mailed me a check for $2500, and the Mitsubishi dealer took an additional $6,000 as they also get reimbursed by the federal government, this car is awesome. it handles better than most suvs, the ride inside is super quiet with windows rolled up. while in full electric you hear everyone in the car breathing. car is just turning 5K, only complaint is wish the battery would go further, but for our family 30 miles with zero gas use works great since 12 miles to work and back home to recharge . it's the same habbit as your cell phone, plug it in and go to sleep, wake up in the morn unplug and go. Even when gas and electric take turns the battery can go up to 60 miles using both. the cost of 60 miles is like $1 per 20 miles or $3=60miles, after that it goes back to 32mpgs with empty battery on gas only, but if you play with the paddles the regen can increase, the car also rolls like no other car, due to less moving parts and no transmission to drag. what a high tech car designed by M.I.T, but as you mention there are some visuals that make it look like a car less state of the art, but i like the simple, basic feel of buttons, and switches, they do the job. highly reccomend this car

Good review Bob - On the current Ireland price list (Aug 19) there are no longer cheaper Diesel Outlander models. At the time video was made, if you priced a Diesel with automatic and similar spec - the Diesel was more expensive. I have the 2019 model and easily get 45km EV range on average (2019 model has a larger battery). Also on combined city and motorway driving, my experience is that it does 3L/100km (averaged over a week with regular charging). Motorway driving @ 100 kph and no battery charge, you can expect circa 6.8L/100km, as long as not too heavy on Air-con. Other benefits include reduced tolls, car tax and parking charges (in some locations).

Hi Bob, great work on the reviews and glad to see you’re gaining quite a following on KZread now. The main reasons I’ve subscribed are: • no script filled with positivity to promote, if something on a car strikes you as odd or just badly thought out, you’ll not hesitate to criticise, the honesty is refreshing. I particularly like the fact that sometimes you blatantly don’t bother to read the manuals and just start pressing buttons to see how user friendly the dash is, that’s what any normal person is going to do anyway. It baffles me why more car reviewers don’t use this approach, it’s what real people do in real life! • no OTT camera work, the main thing that I dislike with the likes of Top Gear and all the mainstream reviewers is the cutting and messing around with their camera angles and frames, you barely get a chance to look at the bloody thing before they cut to the next bit. • no music, there’s really no need for music when you’re review a car and I don’t know why so many reviewers seem to use sound pieces these days. Keep doing what you’re doing, you’re on to a winner Bob.

The petrol engine inside the PHEV is a 2.4-liter. The electric mileage you can get in the city is 35miles/50km. If you examine the price list for your country Bob, you shall see that the PHEV version is actually cheaper than the diesel one. You should compare diesel automatic (44900 Euro) with the PHEV (Instyle costs 43900 euro) since no electric vehicle is offered with a manual transmission.

I am not that worried about the PHEV premium of 4000 euros - depending on one's driving profile: So for example someone who does frequent short trips (work, shopping, kids to school etc...) will almost always drive in pure electric mode and by that spare the engine. This will extend the engine's life dramatically as combustion engines suffer under frequent thermal expansions and contractions that come with driving frequent short trips. Furthermore, the PHEV doesn't have a transmission which again fully eliminates a major area of risk and expensives repairs. Over time I guess the Mitsubishi PHEV will not only save a lot money in fuel, but also on maintenance costs - provided the batteries don't degrade too fast (which I believe is not the case with the Mistubishi Outlander PHEV). Last not least, because of recuperation, the brakes are wearing down at half the speed if compared to combustion cars which again translates in lower maintenance cost. Great review and I consider the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV as currently best offering for commuters who need the space and live in areas with an insufficience presence of high speed charging stations.

Honestly, the Outlanders from 2007 onward don't seem bad but because of bad marketing I guess Mitsubishi lost some of its foothold in the US market and is trying to regain it.

The mpg (equivalent) on these is not a straightforward calc. Realistically on petrol it’s is probably 30 mpg. Electricity costs about 1/6 the price of petrol or diesel, so 180 mpg on electricity. Assuming you charge at home each night, the first 30 miles/day is at 180 mpg and everything else at 30 mpg. Do 40 miles/day it’s 140 mpg Do 60 miles/day it’s 105 mpg Do 140 miles/day it’s 57 mpg The first gallon of fuel a day is €1! The rest is full price but that saves €5.50 every day or €2,000/year.

I have run mine for 29000 miles give or take and never reset the mpg record. For a year I was running every other week to and fro Oxford to Hull some weeks even more often and I am reading 48 mpg over the life of the car. Yes constant motorway thrashes drag it down and mine is the older 2ltr model. We have now moved up to Yorkshire and my daily commute is now 28 miles round trip which is covered by 75 to 85 % electric. I would have have gone all electric but there was no other vehicle with 4wd and a large boot needed for electric wheelchair and 3 passengers. There still isn’t one from any manufacturer for the money I paid. Double the budget and yes there will be the new Audi and Mercedes but way out of my league. Mine was a pre registered from a Mitsubishi dealer saving £12500 off the list.

Correct - and also when running on petrol the economy gets worse the faster you go, due to the fixed ratio and the fact that it's not an aerodynamic sports car :) So here in Australia where most roads are 80 kph, 100 kph at most, fastest speed limit anywhere in the country is 110 kph, the economy can be quite good. But if you live in a part of the world where you're allowed to do 130-140kph on the highway, the economy will be far far worse.

The Kia PHEV has similar battery capacity and and fuel capacity, but is a lighter smaller car so should return better economy figures. You loose All Wheel Drive though, the KIA is purely front wheel drive, and you loose a lot of interior storage space, which may or may not matter depending on what you use the vehicle for. Mitsubishi's system allows for pure EV mode, auto hybrid, save mode to keep the current battery level (for example on a long trip, use save mode if you know you have some low speed city congestion you'd like to drive through in EV mode only later on) and also charge mode to specifically charge the battery up from petrol. Again, useful if you're going to be in some low speed start stop traffic and don't want petrol used then. It can operate in series mode where the petrol engine tops up the battery and the car drives on electric power, or in parallel mode where the petrol engine is directly coupled to the wheels at about 70kph or above, and will also top up the battery. This high speed driving is when a petrol engine is most efficient, low speed is when electric motors are most efficient. There are no gears in the outlander - it's a fixed single ratio for the petrol engine starting around 70kph and topping out at about 180kph I believe. The kia has 6 gears, which is good, but I do not believe it has anywhere near the manual control available in the outlander. But I'd love to see a more detailed comparison of both cars. For my purposes, I'd really enjoy the extra space and the all wheel drive.

The sport button makes this quite quick for what it is. Love my PHEV. This guy does not really know what this is all about. That's not it's ideal use case, it's best for a short commute, up to 35/40 km. if you can charge at both ends 15/20 km if you can only charge at home, I only have to fill the small tank when it uses the petrol to avoid degradation, I can commute for months in EV mode only. I go on long trips of 1,000+ miles twice a year and I just treat it as a normal car then, ( I get about 28/35 mpg) which is pretty normal for a standard size SUV.

So independent EU surveys of large car owner groups shows phev cars have the highest gaps between the official test fuel efficiency and what the car owner gets out driving. Hybrid cars come next, then diesel and then petrol. So the litre of petrol you think you'll save are galaxy far far away from reality. This is due to our crap testing system in the EU and car makers gaming the test to get the best result. The outlander is a large, heavy, slab shaped SUV and that's before a big battery is added to the largesse. Mitsu sold lots of these big heavy diesels to farmers and construction where the fuel price could be offset or bought cheaper than Joe Blogs It sold well in the UK as owner's can get into London without the congestion charge. Not saying the diesel is the answer but take the km/l test result and half it or more and then decide how often you can charge it and the PHEV premium cost. This is true for all phev cars so it's not all the fault of Mitsu. Land Rover is copying this so it's elite buyers can avoid the annoying bill when they head into London city to shop. Note the new EU car test won't change the official figures till better ones post 2020. Best answer is to either go all electric or plan to charge it literally every time you park. It's not to say hybrid or Phev can't be fuel efficient, just that the dealers spec sheet on fuel is 'away with the fairies' and your weekly commute style and driving style are crucial otherwise the only loser at the gas station will be you. In theory most buyers who can charge overnight at home will do so, even Tesla owners but 35Km electric range is crap even if it can double the gas range as it coasts, uses regen breaking, starts from electric every time etc....
