A valve cover gaskets is made of plastic, rubber, or cork which is used as a seal between the engine block and the head cover.
There is no maintenance on valve cover gasket but is usually replaced when there is an oil leak.
Symptoms of bad valve cover gasket:
⦁ Oil leaks from the engine
⦁ Low oil level
⦁ Burn smell
⦁ Smoke from engine compartment
Torque Spec
⦁ Ignition Coil bolts: 89 ± 17 in-lb (10 ± 2 N⋅m)
⦁ Valve Cover bolts: 27 ± 4 in-lb (3 ± .5 N·m)
⦁ Throttle Cable Clip bolt: 89 ± 17 in-lb (10 ± 2 N⋅m)

    I use a air compressor but if you don't have one use a can of brake kleen and a paper towel

    It depends on the condition of the metal. Mechanics use RTV just to be safe.

    @@joemcshmoe10 If both surfaces are smooth all the way around, you don't need anything. If there are cuts/dents/scratches, then you will have to use it to fill them in. If this is the first time ever opening it and you are careful not to damage surfaces, you shouldn't need anything except the gasket.
