Lyrics:
Real men don't need other people, and
Real men suck it in
Real men don't flinch or bleed in public
Oh, I think I'm a real man
Little boys cry and look around for comfort
And always get what they want
Little boys see toys and say "I can take that!"
Oh, you are my little boy
Though honestly, sir
All I wanna do is get naked in front of you
So you can look me up and down and tell me
"Well done, girl, you're looking good"
Real men keep cool in the face of a fire
Go down with the ship
And real men don't eat
'Cause they're above that, damn it
Oh, I'm gonna be a real man
Though honestly, sir
All I wanna do is get naked in front of you
So you can look me up and down
And give me your love for being so good
But little boys hold me, color me
Praise me, make me feel lovely
For a little while
So little boy, say you want me
'Cause, well, I can't take it
Go ahead
Do it, do it

Mitski rly said "My attempts to be strong may be emulating toxic masculinity and directing me to another form of oppression, and this way of gaining power ultimately still places me at the mercy of male approval, and at the same time I'm missing the true privilege of being male which is simply taking what you want because you know you are entitled to it... I know this is about toxic masculinity but i think its also about how toxic masculinity can make woman only feel wanted when men are toxicly masculine. She talks about how she only feels loved when men validate her body and the way she looks when shes naked, and calls true love and affection "unmanly".

I really like this comment. I see it like this: if you're acting on a stage 24/7 every day of your life, you'll start forgetting the difference between people and characters, between honesty and performance. At the end of the day that's what gender is: performance. (Btw I really reccomend Revolutionary Girl Utena, it's an anime about a girl trying to be a fairy-tale prince and save a princess, adopting the same masculinity standards as 'real men')

the lyric “honestly sir all I want to do is get naked in front of you so you can look me up and down and give me your love for being so good” really resonates with me. Growing up mixed, I constantly felt ugly and unwanted, so when I got older and first started receiving attention from guys, I was made to feel like if I didn’t take advantage, no one else would want me. Like I would only have very few opportunities of people that desire me. This gave me the toxic mentality of having a very difficult time saying no to men and constantly desiring male validation and attention, even if it was toxic. Mitski always hits the spot

The wound cuts even deeper when you "disappoint" yourself during this process. Just my take on the theory

this song is a masterpiece. the percussion in the back during the last section mimics an army march (a classic "masculine" ideal). its pointed and uniform and beautifully contrasts her vocals. maybe I'm misinterpreting but I feel like shes trying to say people chasing perfection will never meet the standards of our world (which is so influenced by toxic masculinity) because it isn't humanly possible

i feel like this song hits me in the same way as others, but being a trans woman adds to the feelings. I could have had everything handed to me, but being trans, i became the woman i wanted to be and lost the ability to be a "real man" during transition and prior to learning who I was, i was distant and I forced myself into the things she sings about in real men. Especially the first verse. Now though, I want male validation for who I am, and I try and become a "real man" like she says, but I cant and the validation i crave doesnt come. I want the validation she sings for because i wasnt able to reassure myself, and nobody else reassured me. I love this song so much, mitski is such an amazing artist and lush needs more appreciation

i know this is about sexism but this reminds me of when i get angry at myself for crying because i’d never ‘be seen as a real boy’ and it’s true. i hate sexualising myself and trying to fit in for cis men’s validation. my mind always tells me that i’ll never be a real man because i cry too much and i like ‘feminine’ things and i also stand for equal rights. real men enjoy being in control and make sure they’re in control, not just cry at the thought of being a leader. and real men CERTAINLY don’t be affectionate and touchhy.

I'm kinda shocked everyone in this comment section relates to this song because they were trying to please men with a whole new personality that isn't even theirs I am also very feminine, i like things like teddy bears, dresses, ribbons, skirts and i also am very sensitive, like, i cry if i remember the times i suffered from bullying from 6 years ago that i already should have moved on. But i never try to please any man by being a "real man", i just be myself and whoever likes me the way i am, liked me and that's it.

Real men don't need other people And real men suck it in Real men don't flinch or bleed in public Oh, I think I'm a real man Little boys cry and look around for comfort And always get what they want Little boys see toys and say, "I can take that!" Oh, you are my little boy Though honestly sir, all I wanna do Is get naked in front of you So you can look me up and down And tell me, "Well done girl, you're looking good" Real men keep cool in the face of a fire Go down with the ship And real men don't eat, 'cause they're above that, damn it Oh, I'm gonna be a real man Though honestly sir, all I wanna do Is get naked in front of you So you can look me up and down And give me your love for being so good But little boys hold me, color me Praise me, make me feel lovely For a little while So little boy, say you want me 'Cause when I can't take it, go ahead Do it, do

TW: sorta ED? girl i don’t even know what it was lol…. 1:35-2:01 is SO GOOD!!! especially when mitski sings, “and real men don’t eat / because they’re above that”, you can hear the percussion sound sorta “metal-like” (almost like someone is using eating utensils as drum sticks) which really helps visualize an empty plate, which symbolizes starvation. this part always hit home for me because i used to think that eating made my presence more “noticeable” and would’ve preferred to be seen more as an entity than someone who stuffs food in their mouth. i wanted to seem unreal back then, so much so to coordinating everything i did. i would walk a certain way, bend over to pick things up a certain way, coughed a certain way- sometimes even restricting my breathing so i wouldn’t make myself too obvious of being human. i wanted to be a character, unattainable and admirable, and not a gloated snob. i thought everyone around me noticed the smallest mistakes i made- if breathing a little too loud and having my back rolls exposed even counted as one. i was 11.
